Academy offers<br />

course on media<br />

CARLSBAD — Student<br />

Television Network (STN),<br />

a national association of<br />

high school and middle<br />

school media programs, has<br />

announced plans for its first<br />

academy program for middle<br />

school students.<br />

<strong>The</strong> academy will be<br />

held <strong>June</strong> 24 through <strong>June</strong><br />

28 at the Carlsbad by the<br />

Sea Resort, 850 Palomar<br />

Airport Road.<br />

<strong>The</strong> five-day academy<br />

is open to students entering<br />

grades six through eight.<br />

No previous experience in<br />

video is required.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cost starts at $350.<br />

Early morning and evening<br />

extended care is also available.<br />

Students from around<br />

the country have been invited<br />

to attend and overnight<br />

options are also available.<br />

Students who attend<br />

will learn about video production,<br />

planning and executing<br />

a story, writing copy,<br />

speaking on camera and<br />

using equipment.<br />

Students will experiment<br />

with the creation of a<br />

feature news story, a public<br />

service announcement, a<br />

commercial, a music video<br />

and a movie trailer.<br />

Students will serve in<br />

various production roles<br />

and will be taught leadership<br />

skills and responsibility<br />

while learning to work<br />

together as a team to complete<br />

a common goal.<br />

and film, this academy<br />

will give students<br />

tremendous confidence in<br />

speaking, writing and performance.”<br />

Loucas, program director<br />

for Student Television<br />

Network. “<strong>The</strong>se are all<br />

21st -century skills that kids<br />

need to be successful.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> Academy Director<br />

is Paul Kass, an STN Board<br />

Member and teacher at<br />

Placerita Middle School.<br />

In addition to his normal<br />

teaching assignment,<br />

he organizes the video production/broadcastjournalism<br />

club for the school and<br />

helps the students produce<br />

a live daily morning news<br />

show.<br />
