July 2,1992 — the day of the cod moratorium — marked the s<strong>in</strong>gle biggest layoff <strong>in</strong> Canadian<br />

labour history. As many as 30,000 people were immediately out of work.<br />

Organize yourself <strong>in</strong>to small groups and respond to the follow<strong>in</strong>g questions and activities. Be prepared to<br />

share your responses with the rest of the class.<br />

1. a) What is the key economic <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> your community? (e.g., farm<strong>in</strong>g, tourism, m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, oil)<br />

b) How many people do you th<strong>in</strong>k that <strong>in</strong>dustry, or those <strong>in</strong>dustries, employ? (Or it may be easier to<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k about the percentage of adults employed <strong>in</strong> those <strong>in</strong>dustries.)<br />

c) How would your community be affected if that <strong>in</strong>dustry were to close? Would there be other<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries that could absorb those workers? Would the workers have transferrable skills that could<br />

be used elsewhere?<br />

2. Do you know anyone who has lost his or her job? What impact did that have on the person and their<br />

family?<br />

3. What are some of the unique challenges that face older workers who lose their jobs?<br />
