Figure 2.13: Fellenius Method <strong>of</strong> Analysing <strong>Reinforced</strong> <strong>Soil</strong> Structures<br />

There are two reinforcement effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tensile force generated in <strong>the</strong><br />

reinforcements in <strong>the</strong> sliding surface (see Fig. 2.13).<br />

(1) Anchoring effect,<br />

(2) C<strong>on</strong>fining effect,<br />

Regarding <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>fining effect (2), involves <strong>the</strong> equati<strong>on</strong>, Eq. (2.1), and regarding <strong>the</strong><br />

anchoring effect (1), two possible c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s arise, it may be c<strong>on</strong>sidered as a resisting<br />

force (numerator) and as a sliding force (denominator). Sometimes, both effects are<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sidered simultaneously toge<strong>the</strong>r depending <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> problem. Thus following five<br />

combinati<strong>on</strong>s can be derived by coupling <strong>the</strong>se two effects with <strong>the</strong> Eq. (2. 1).<br />
