Dear Readers,
Some of you have written to ask if Australia Post would have
a special Year of the Outback issue. We considered it, but
decided against adding an issue to the program. Instead we
have dedicated the three issues already planned for 2002 –
that fit within the outback theme– to the Year of the
Outback. I refer to Nature of Australia-Desert (June); Albert
Namatjira birth centenary (July) and completing the
triptych in this Bulletin with Bush Tucker (September).
Indigenous Australians have lived off bush tucker for
thousands of years. Now everyone is catching on. You’ll find
it in specialist restaurants in major cities and in signature
dishes in restaurants throughout Australia.
I think you will find the design of the stamps, by Janet
Boschen of the Australia Post Design Studio, both colourful
and fascinating. Janet is the most experienced designer in
our studio and her designs are always exciting, imaginative
and of the highest quality. Her use of the tête-bêche format
adds another level on which the truly striking images can be
appreciated.
If you are one of our readers with concerns about double
cancellation of your finely cancelled covers. I am pleased to
say that as we prepare this Bulletin we are starting a trial of
‘carrier envelopes’. We hope they will solve the problem of
double cancellations yet still allow modern handling and
processing of the post.
Sample carrier envelopes have been distributed to stamp
clubs and organisations. We hope to have analysed feedback
from the trial and be able to announce the results in the next
Stamp Bulletin.
This is my last Letter to Readers, as I will soon retire from
Australia Post. For the past decade I have been privileged to
have been responsible for Australia’s stamps. I would like to
thank all collectors who have written to me over that period.
I started this letter as a way of encouraging you to write to
me with your suggestions, concerns and comments. It may
not be obvious, but every one of you who contacted me has
– in some way – shaped what we have done, and how we
have done it. I have made many friends through philately
and I wish to thank them, and collectors generally, for the
support they have given to Australian stamps.
Stamps truly are, and will remain, real national treasures.
AUSTRALIA-THAILAND joint issue
Diplomatic Relations 1952 - 2002
This joint issue celebrates 50 years of formal
diplomatic relations between Australia and
Thailand. Waterlilies are found in both
countries and the flower’s traditional
associations with beauty, enlightenment and
renewal make it a fitting symbol to mark these
diplomatic relations.
Waterlilies produce spectacular flowers,
which can last from a few days to a week. The
wonderfully showy flowers may be fragrant.
Some open during the day and close at night,
others the opposite.
The stamps
The stamps and miniature sheet are
beautifully illustrated by Thaneth
Ponchaiwong, of the Communications
Authority of Thailand Philatelic Department
45c Nymphaea immutabilis
Nymphaea immutabilis grows in northern
Australia, close to the coast right across the
top down to the Tropic of Capricorn on the
east coast. Currently there is no common
name for this species.
The young Nymphaea fruit is pulled beneath
the surface by the coiling flower stalk and
develops underwater into a spongy berry with
many seeds that are enclosed in arils. When
ripe, up to 2000 seeds are released from each
fruit.
Young seeds float because the arils contain
air pockets. The seeds are then dispersed by
water currents or by water birds that eat them.
As the arils become waterlogged, the seeds sink
into the mud to germinate that same year or
wait for the next wet season floods.
The seeds generally only live for a year or
two. The plant also sometimes spreads by
sprouting from the bulbs. The flat round leaves
have a waxy water-repellent upper side. The
underside, however, seems to cling to the water
by surface tension.
$1.00 Nelumbo nucifer
With a symmetrical, exquisitely beautiful
flower, Nelumbo nucifera, commonly known
as the East Indian lotus or sacred lotus, is an
aquatic perennial native to northern
Australia, Papua New Guinea and South-East
Asia and grows in lowland wetlands. In
3
AUSTRALIA-THAILAND joint issue
Australia it has been recorded down to the
New South Wales/Queensland border.
Large, fragrant deep-pink flowers appear
between March and November.
The Nelumbo (lotus) fruit develops well
above the water as a large spongy capsule
containing several loose hard-coated seeds.
The young seeds are a favoured food in many
cultures and the dry spongy fruit is popular
in dried flower arrangements. As the fruit
matures it nods over and free seeds gradually
drop and sink. They may stay buried in the
mud for many decades, or even a hundred
years in dried mud, before germinating.
The plant also spreads by sprouting from
the prickly creeping rhizome, also a valued
part of many Asian cuisines. The leaves
develop at the height of the wet season but the
prickly leaf stalks are stiff, and the leaves are
left standing above the water as the level drops.
The flowers are produced among the leaves
and stand clear of the water. The classical
symmetrical lotus bud only lasts a day or two
before the flower becomes bedraggled.
Miniature sheet
A rich and evocative treatment of the
waterlilies conveys the exotic beauty of the
flowers and their settings. The design
suggests the waterlily stamps are floating in
a pond.
Bush Tucker
No matter how you look at it, this issue is both
beautiful and fascinating. The subject is Bush
Tucker and features five Australian plants
traditionally eaten by Aboriginal people. The
part of the plant consumed (and depicted)
varies from the tuber (murnong); fruit
(quandong and lilly-pilly); seed (acacia); and
flower (honey grevillea). The featured plants
are found in a range of climates and locations
throughout Australia.
The plant foods are shown against a
background of a woven basket or wooden
coolamon. These containers, from the
collections of the Museum of Victoria, are
appropriate to particular regions where the
foods are found.
As well as the stamps (gummed and selfadhesive)
the issue includes a first day cover, a
set of five maximum cards and a gutter strip of
ten x 49c (design in gutter) See pages 8 and 9 for
a more detailed description of the issue.
6
Tête-bêche block of ten x 49c stamps (top row = sequence B, botton row = sequence A)
The stamps
Lilly-pilly (Acmena smithii)
There are several varieties of lilly-pilly fruits that
may be eaten. Acmena smithii, depicted on the
stamp, grows best in the moist soil of mountain
gullies from Victoria to Northern Queensland.
The pale mauve or white berry-like fruits are
pleasantly tart and juicy and can be picked and
eaten raw from the tree. Acmena smithii is a
common urban street tree.
The basket in the background was made
from plant fibre by Joyce Moate of Healesville,
Victoria. The coil technique is typical of the
weaving traditions of South-Eastern Australia.
Honey grevillea (Grevillea juncifolia)
Grevillea juncifolia grows on sand plains and
dunes in Central Australia. It is characterised by
large orange flower clusters with abundant
nectar. The sweet honey is highly sought after
and can be sucked directly from the flower or
extracted by steeping the flower in water to
make a sweet drink.
The wooden coolamon in the background
was made by Tjuliata of Ernabella, Central
Australia. The burnt poker work designs
represent women dancing.
Quandong (Santalum acuminatum)
The quandong is a traditional staple food with
a vitamin C content twice as high as that of an
orange. Quondong trees are found in semi-arid
areas of all mainland states. The small bright
red fruits are eaten raw. Dried fruit, collected
from under the tree, can be reconstituted in
water. The fruit can also be pounded and made
into cakes to be dried and stored for later use.
The relatively large kernels can also be eaten or
ground into a paste for medicinal purposes.
The plant-fibre string bag used for the
background was made in a figure eight
stitch in Victoria.
Acacia (Acacia coriacea)
The seeds of many types of acacia trees are
eaten by Aboriginal people throughout
Australia. One of the more attractive varieties,
Acacia coriacea, is characterised by long, twisted
pods containing vivid orange and black seeds.
This acacia, also called dogwood, grows on the
spinifex sandplains of Central Australia. When
they are green, the pods are roasted and the
seeds extracted and eaten. Hardened seeds are
also picked off the ground then soaked and
mashed with water to make a ‘milky’ drink.
The coolamon in the background, made at
Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, is
decorated with red ochre and white dots.
Murnong (Microseris ‘lanceolata’)
The murnong is a small root vegetable
resembling a dandelion. Murnong was a staple
food of Aboriginal people in South-Eastern
Australia until the mid 19th century when
introduced grazing animals rapidly destroyed
this once abundant and widespread plant. Now
the murnong is considered an endangered
species. Murnong tubers were sometimes eaten
raw but were usually cooked in baskets.
The plant-fibre woven bag in the
background was made in a figure eight
stitch in Victoria.
Bush Tucker
Sheet layout and tête-bêche printing
The stamps will be printed in sheets of 50,
in two panes of 25, with a
decorative gutter.
The design takes advantage
of the tête-bêche printing
format, using it to enhance the
impact of the designs.
Tête-bêche printing alone might generate some
interest. It is not used as commonly as it once
was. When combined with the striking stamp
designs and some subtle design flourishes, this
Bush Tucker issue should spark interest and
study amongst committed collectors in
Australia and overseas.
For example: the design
bleeds into the selvedge at the
top and bottom of the sheet.
The gutter design bleeds
into the selvedge of the adjacent
stamps.
The bush banana motif which runs through
the gutter (and at the top of the facing page) is
directional. The bananas hang ‘down’ thus
defining the sheet’s top and bottom.
The individual stamps and the design set
itself make their visual statements when viewed
in isolation. As well they can be visually combined
with their tête-bêche ‘partners’ to create
additional views.
Looking at multiple stamps in the sheet, the
designs can be visualised as columns or rows.
Tête-bêche pairs dissolve into a single large
design, tête-bêche rows produce dramatic
blocks. The role layout plays in the perception
of the designs is most dramatically illustrated in
the full sheet.
The sheet is shown against a black background
to make it easier to see the perforations,
selvedges and other design features.
BATTLE FOR AUSTRALIA 1942 PSE
This pre-stamped envelope commemorates the
period when Australia faced the threat of
invasion during World War II. The imagery
symbolises the drawn-out struggle to defend
Australia against Japanese forces during World
War II. It focuses on 1942 when Japanese forces
arrived on Australia’s doorstep and Australians
faced the spectre of invasion.
The expression ‘The Battle for Australia’
comes from Prime Minister Curtin, who in a
radio broadcast on 16 February 1942, the day
after the fall of Singapore, declared:
‘…it is now work or fight as we have
never worked or fought before…What the
Battle for Britain required, so the Battle for
Australia demands…’
The design
The illustration area features images of army,
navy, merchant navy, airforce and home front
actions in defence of Australia in 1942. The
illustration in the stamp area represents the
Japanese threat to Australia in 1942.
Detailed descriptions of the images used on
the PSE will be available online at the Australia
Post Stamps website from 3 September 2002
East Timor Stamp Update
How many readers noticed a very small but
important design feature in these stamps that
wasn’t mentioned in Bulletin 265?
If you had a careful look at one of the East
Timor stamp posters in Post outlets you might
have caught a glimpse of it. Otherwise you
would have needed a magnifying glass to see it.
“It” is micro printing. The first ever done by
Australia Post. Although indistinguishable
from the tais design to the naked eye, the text is
completely legible at 10X magnification.
Looking at a stamp with a good quality magnifying
glass you would see that each of the four
denominations carries one quarter of the text of
the crocodile legend text(in Portuguese), which
is the East Timor foundation story. An enlarged
segment from the US25c stamp is shown at
right.
Richard Breckon is writing a detailed article
about the issue, including its micro printing in
the fifth edition of Stamp Issues (see page 20).
