Christmas Island Fungi
2001 2001
Fungi are flowerless plants. The larger species
of fungi alone are at least as numerous as the
flowering plants. Fungi grow in a beautiful
diversity of colour and form. Completely
lacking in chlorophyll, fungi are unable to
photosynthesise their own food. Instead
fungi feed by ingesting nutrients from dead
or living organic matter.
A mushroom or toadstool is the fruiting
body of a fungus. The mushroom’s function
is to produce spores and to provide the
mechanical means for spore distribution.
For fungi, spores, rather than seeds, are the
means of reproduction.
Different kinds of fungi prefer different
habitats. Some grow only on dead wood,
others around the base of trees, some only
amongst grass or out of moss beds. In fact,
fungi are found in almost all environments.
Contrary to folklore, there is no simple
test to determine if a fungus is safe to eat.
Never taste a found mushroom unless you
can positively identify it.
The stamps
$1.00 Chaetocalathus semisupinus is a pale,
delicate, small stemless mushroom that
grows on the underside of rotting wood. The
top of the cap is attached to the wood, so that
the gills face down.
$1.50 Pycnoporus sanguineus is sometimes
called the orange-bracket or cinnabar
fungus. It has a flattened, shelf-like shape
and grows singly or in small groups.
of Australia’s leading botanical artists. Her
previous designs for Australia Post include
Australian Fungi 1981 and Australia Day 1990.
