It's important to work out the amount of water<br />
your pond will hold and the size of liner you'll<br />
need. Use our handy guide to help with this.<br />

What Size Pump and Filter will I need?<br />
A pond with lots of plants and no fish (or a few, small<br />
native fish) needs all of the water to be pumped through<br />
the filter every 2 hours.<br />
We call this a nature pond.<br />
A pond with some plants and some fish (mainly goldfish),<br />
needs all of the water to pass through the filter every 1 ½<br />
hours.<br />
We call this a goldfish pond, it is by far the most<br />
common type.<br />
A pond with few plants and big fish, like koi, needs the<br />
water to be pumped every hour.<br />
We call this a koi pond.<br />
So if you have a pond of 3000 litres then your pump<br />
flow rate will need to be:<br />
Nature Pond – Flow rate is 1500 litres per hour<br />

Concrete Ponds<br />
The strongest type of pond. If you get it right first time your pond will last for many years.<br />
However, this method of construction can be technically difficult, expensive and time-consuming.<br />
Foundations must be reinforced and the final layer of render should include reinforcement fibres<br />
and be sealed with G4 or Lotus Ultimate Concrete Pond Sealer.<br />
Render Reinforcement Fibres<br />
Used in the construction of concrete<br />
ponds to add strength and dramatically<br />
reduce cracking, these 6mm<br />
polypropylene fibres should be added to<br />
the final layer of mortar. Approximately<br />
20g of fibres are needed per kilogram of<br />
mortar. Supplied in 900g bags; enough<br />
for 45Kg of mortar.<br />

G4 Concrete Pond Sealer<br />
If you have decided to make your pond from concrete then you will need<br />
to seal the top layer of render to stop the water getting in and the lime,<br />
which is harmful to fish, getting out. The best way to do this is with G4<br />
Sealer. You don't need a primer, just paint it straight onto the concrete.<br />
There is a choice of clear (dries translucent) or black. You can also use<br />
G4 to coat flagstones, waterfalls, statues and other concrete products to<br />
make them safe for your pond.<br />

This is the kind of pump you need to run a<br />
filter and/or a waterfall. They're designed<br />
to suck in big bits of dirt from the pond<br />
and send them to the filter, so they rarely<br />
clog up and need very little maintenance.<br />
Water is pumped out of the pond and into<br />
the filter, coming back down a waterfall<br />
or via a return pipe. You need a pump that<br />
moves the water fast enough to keep the<br />
pond clean.<br />
What size do I need?<br />
Use our guide on page 6 to work out how<br />
much water your pond holds and calculate<br />
your pumps flow rate.<br />
Pumping uphill<br />
Pump flow rates are reduced when they<br />
pump uphill. An Aquaforce 6000 will<br />
pump 6000 litres an hour on the level, if<br />
it is pumping the water 1m (3'3") higher<br />
than the pond surface it'll pump 4750 litres<br />
per hour. In most ponds the water is lifted<br />
around a metre out of the pond so all our<br />
pumps show the flow rate at 1m (3'3"). For<br />
different heights give us a call and we'll<br />

Picking the right size hose<br />
Picking the right size hose is easy. Just look at your pump's outlet size (in mm) and your<br />
filter's inlet size (in mm). Pick the largest one that appears in both and that is your hose<br />
size. It's important to choose the biggest hose size you can as this will maximise the<br />
water flow. Or you could just give us a call on 01904 696933 and we'll do the rest.<br />
Example:<br />
Aquaforce 2500 pump (p30) outlet size is 20-40mm connecting to a Revolution 4500<br />
Filter (p41) inlet size 20-25mm. The biggest size that they will both take is 25mm so that<br />
is the size you should choose. Other fittings should always be the same size as the hose,<br />

A filter keeps your pond water<br />
clean and safe for your fish. If<br />
you get the right one then you'll<br />
never have green water again.<br />
All filters need a pump to push the<br />
water from the pond and into the filter.<br />
They contain various types of media<br />
that clean the water mechanically (like<br />
a coffee filter) or biologically (using<br />
friendly bacteria).<br />
Almost all filters come with an Ultra<br />
Violet Clarifier (UVC), that stops the<br />
pond going green.<br />
You'll need to clean the filter out from<br />
time to time when the flow out of it<br />
is reduced. Always clean the media<br />
with pond water to protect the friendly<br />
bacteria.<br />
Most UVC filters come with a 3 metre<br />
cable to connect them to the mains.<br />
Unlike pond pumps this cable can easily<br />
be replaced if a longer one is needed.<br />
The bulb in your UVC filter should be<br />
replaced every spring (even if it still<br />
lights up).<br />
What size filter do I need?<br />
Your filter's maximum flow rate should<br />
be at least as much as the output from<br />
your pump.<br />
If your chosen filter is bigger (i.e. has a<br />
higher maximum flow rate) than you<br />
need then that's fine, it means you'll<br />
have to clean it out less often.<br />
To work out what pump flow rate you<br />
need turn to page 6, to look up the flow<br />
rate of your pump turn to pages 28-33.<br />
Ultraviolet Clarifiers (UVC)<br />
UVC's work together with a pump and a<br />
filter. Separate UVC's like those on pages<br />
54-56 are for adding to an existing<br />
pump and filter system which doesn't<br />
already have a UVC or a system where<br />
the UVC needs replacing.<br />

Operation - As water enters the filter<br />
it passes through a set of Venturi<br />
which add oxygen to the water, then it<br />
enters the bio media module where the<br />
