first at the main categories of files <strong>and</strong> the arrangement of files within series. It has<br />

then considered the general principles of classification <strong>and</strong> coding <strong>and</strong> how particular<br />

schemes should be selected. It has considered the following types of filing systems:<br />

• hierarchical systems<br />

• systems based on organisational structure<br />

• keyword code systems<br />

• alphabetical systems.<br />

It has considered the following types of coding systems:<br />

• decimal<br />

• multi-part<br />

• alphabetical <strong>and</strong> alphanumeric<br />

• running number<br />

• block number<br />

• keyword.<br />

It has introduced the main procedures needed to document a filing system. Finally, it<br />

has looked briefly at arranging computer files.<br />
