Educational Purpose and Programming Statement <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>Classical</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Florida</strong><br />

WAYJ, Fort Myers, FL<br />

<strong>Classical</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> (CSF) is wholly owned by American Public Media Group<br />

(APMG), which has the power to appoint the proposed assignee’s board members.<br />

APMG was approved by the Commission as the <strong>license</strong>e <strong>of</strong> WKCP(FM), Miami, FL,<br />

Facility ID No. 68118. CSF is the <strong>license</strong>e <strong>of</strong> WBPI (FM), West Palm Beach, FL,<br />

Facility ID No. 58363. CSF proposes to operate WAYJ in the same manner as CSF<br />

operates WPBI, which is a noncommercial educational broadcast station. More<br />

specifically, CSF plans to broadcast classical music programming over WAYJ.<br />

CSF is a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it 501c3 public radio organization dedicated to broadcasting classical<br />

music. Its program schedule includes broadcasts <strong>of</strong> nationally renowned classical<br />

programs such as Per<strong>for</strong>mance Today®, SymphonyCast® and Pipedreams®. We are<br />

excited to bring classical music to the thriving cultural communitities <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Florida</strong><br />

and look <strong>for</strong>ward to engaging our audiences and community partners in providing the<br />

best possible service to our audiences.<br />

The stated mission <strong>of</strong> CSF is to enrich the mind and nourish the spirit <strong>of</strong> the local<br />

community through the art, availability, and advocacy <strong>of</strong> classical music. To further our<br />

mission, CSF’s musical presentations will mostly focus on the classical, operatic, and<br />

chamber music, musical styles not generally available on mainstream media and<br />

increasingly not supported by commercial radio. It will provide music education <strong>for</strong>ums<br />

and programs <strong>for</strong> local schools, colleges, and universities. It will instruct the public on<br />

music appreciation <strong>of</strong> both historic and contemporary artists and compositions in this art<br />

<strong>for</strong>m. It will highlight local musicians and programs that teach about arts and culture <strong>of</strong><br />

interest in the Fort Myers and <strong>South</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> Area.<br />

Typical programming will include:<br />

On the Town – The host <strong>of</strong> this 5-minute weekly segment highlights some <strong>of</strong> the best and<br />

unique events around <strong>South</strong> <strong>Florida</strong>. The program will air Thursdays, 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.,<br />

and Fridays, 8 a.m. For example, the program explores the <strong>Florida</strong> Grand Opera’s<br />

interpretation <strong>of</strong> Mozart’s Don Juan story. Also noted in the program are works by many<br />

<strong>of</strong> the most important 20th century Latin American artists who are being exhibited at the<br />

Boca Raton Museum <strong>of</strong> Art; their work mostly reflects the interaction <strong>of</strong> politics, society<br />

and art as well as the search <strong>for</strong> cultural identity.<br />

Backstage with the New World Symphony. -Each week Lynne Warfel and Elena See will<br />

introduce the audience to the best and brightest young instrumentalists at NWS. These<br />

young musicians who live in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> concentrate exclusively on working,<br />

practicing, studying and per<strong>for</strong>ming as full time orchestral musicians. The New World<br />

Symphony invites the world's best guest artists, coaches and conductors to work with the<br />

organization in a full season <strong>of</strong> concerts and community outreach programs. Lynne<br />

Warfel interviews current Fellows and brings listeners musical highlights <strong>of</strong> upcoming<br />

concerts at NWS. The program will air Wednesdays, 8 a.m. & 5 p.m.<br />
