Soccer Wrap-up<br />

Two Goals from Glory<br />

Earning its fourth consecutive<br />

bid to <strong>the</strong> NCAA<br />

Tournament in 2004, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> <strong>University</strong> men’s<br />

soccer team enjoyed an exciting<br />

run in <strong>the</strong> BIG EAST<br />

Championship last fall. Head<br />

Coach Manfred Schellscheidt<br />

boasted a roster of nine returning<br />

starters, including threeyear<br />

starters Jason Hernandez<br />

and Jerrod Laventure, along<br />

with sophomore Sacha Kljestan,<br />

a Preseason All-BIG EAST<br />

selection. With such an experienced<br />

and talented roster, all <strong>the</strong><br />

pieces were in place for <strong>the</strong> team<br />

to enjoy a memorable season.<br />

En route to an 11-6-1 regular<br />

season record, <strong>the</strong> Pirates spent a<br />

total of 11 weeks ranked in <strong>the</strong><br />

Top 25 and played a rigorous<br />

schedule that included six nationally<br />

ranked opponents. The team<br />

qualified for <strong>the</strong> BIG EAST<br />

Tournament as <strong>the</strong> eighth and<br />

final seed with a 5-5 conference<br />

mark. The Pirates faced long<br />

odds at making a run in <strong>the</strong><br />

postseason as a No. 8 seed that<br />

had never advanced past <strong>the</strong><br />

quarterfinals.<br />

Due to injuries, <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Hall</strong><br />

headed into <strong>the</strong> tournament<br />

without its top scorer (Laventure)<br />

and top defender (Hernandez).<br />

The Pirates first played Notre<br />

Dame, which ranked fourth<br />

nationally, had lost just twice<br />

all season and boasted one of<br />

<strong>the</strong> nation’s top defenses. The<br />

Pirates managed to keep <strong>the</strong><br />

game scoreless through regulation<br />

and two overtimes. <strong>Seton</strong><br />

<strong>Hall</strong> pulled off <strong>the</strong> upset when<br />

senior Matt Salotti converted<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Hall</strong>’s eighth straight<br />

penalty kick, and Notre Dame’s<br />

Nate Norman sent his shot over<br />

<strong>the</strong> crossbar.<br />

Junior Boris Pardo recorded three straight shutouts at <strong>the</strong> BIG EAST<br />

Championship game.<br />

Save It Like Becker<br />

Women’s soccer at <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> <strong>University</strong> enjoyed its best<br />

start since 1998, when <strong>the</strong> Pirates raced out to a 6-2-2 record.<br />

Goalkeeper Amanda Becker, a sophomore with a double major<br />

in secondary education and English, became <strong>the</strong> second straight<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> <strong>University</strong> keeper to be named to <strong>the</strong> All-Conference<br />

team by <strong>the</strong> BIG EAST coaches. She started every game in net for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pirates and had five shutouts and 1.29 goals against average.<br />

The Pirates were among three<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r upset winners in <strong>the</strong> quarterfinals,<br />

marking <strong>the</strong> first time<br />

in BIG EAST history that none<br />

of <strong>the</strong> top four seeds advanced<br />

to <strong>the</strong> semifinals.<br />

In <strong>the</strong>ir second match, <strong>the</strong><br />

Pirates faced Georgetown, a<br />

team that had defeated <strong>the</strong>m<br />

4-0 just 12 days earlier. The two<br />

teams played through a cold<br />

and rainy regulation and into<br />

overtime before Kljestan scored<br />

a dramatic goal with under<br />

three minutes left, giving <strong>Seton</strong><br />

<strong>Hall</strong> a 1-0 win and a berth in<br />

<strong>the</strong> championship game.<br />

The Pirates’ cinderella run to<br />

<strong>the</strong> final game matched <strong>the</strong>m<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Connecticut Huskies<br />

for <strong>the</strong> league’s automatic NCAA<br />

Tournament bid. <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Hall</strong>’s<br />

stellar postseason defensive play<br />

continued, as junior goalkeeper<br />

Boris Pardo notched his third<br />

straight shutout. Unfortunately,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pirates could not score ei<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> game went to penalty<br />

kicks. In <strong>the</strong> first BIG EAST<br />

Championship decided by penalty<br />

kicks, <strong>the</strong> Huskies prevailed, 5-3.<br />

Although it was a disappointing<br />

conclusion to an inspiring<br />

tournament, <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> was<br />

soon rewarded with a first-round<br />

home game against Hofstra in<br />

<strong>the</strong> NCAA Tournament. The<br />

Pirates had not lost on Owen<br />

T. Carroll Field in 16 games,<br />

<strong>the</strong> second-longest streak in<br />

program history. But <strong>Seton</strong><br />

<strong>Hall</strong> suffered a sobering end to<br />

<strong>the</strong> season when Hofstra scored<br />

with 12 minutes remaining to<br />

claim a 2-1 win.<br />

The Pirates’ success helped<br />

several individuals earn recognition.<br />

Laventure and Kljestan<br />

both earned All-BIG EAST First<br />

Team honors, and Hernandez<br />

landed a spot on <strong>the</strong> second<br />

team. Pardo also moved into<br />

a tie for <strong>the</strong> top spot at <strong>Seton</strong><br />

<strong>Hall</strong>, with 13 career shutouts.<br />

He is poised to break <strong>the</strong> record<br />

early next season. With nine<br />

players who gained regular<br />

starting experience set to return<br />

next year, <strong>the</strong> Pirates should<br />

once again find <strong>the</strong>mselves on<br />

<strong>the</strong> national stage.<br />
