Girls’ Heptathlon The girls’ heptathlon shall consist of 7 events held on two consecutive days in the following order; unless there is a change by the AAA office. Measurements for all jumps and throws shall be in meters. First Day 1. 100-meter Hurdles 2. Long Jump 3. Discus 4. 200-meter Dash Second Day 1. High Jump 2. Shot 3. 800-meter Run
George S. Jones 1922-2001 Creator of the original Decathlon and Heptathlon Scoring Tables, amended in 2001 by Don Carnahan, Russellville High School, for F.A.T. George S. Jones was the mentor and model for many coaches, athletes and officials, especially in the sport of Track and Field. He graduated from Pottsville High School in 1940 and returned there in 1942 to begin a teaching, coaching and administrative career that spanned seven decades including a part of his career at Atkins High School where he established an endowment fund for girls athletics. The field of mathematics never had a more devoted teacher and the sport of Track and Field never had a better friend. In 1982 Jones told his superintendent and friend Dain Duvall that Pottsville needed another math teacher. There being no room in the school budget to fill that need, George Jones simply “retired”, enabling the district to hire another math teacher, and for his remaining years Jones continued to teach without pay while enjoying his love of teaching math and applying it to many of the most outstanding students. Among his “selected” assignments were math tutoring, working with the Gifted and Talented program at Pottsville Elementary School and ACT preparation for PHS students. In describing some of his better students, Jones could always tell you what score they made on the ACT exam. Most have heard the story of how Jones donated the land on which the new Pottsville High School was built. In January of 2000, the George S. Jones Gymnasium at PHS was dedicated to the man who made it possible. It was fitting that his funeral was conducted there with the bleachers and seating on the floor filled with many of his friends, neighbors, former students and fellow educators. For over 40 years George Jones officiated state track championships and taught many others how to do the same conscientious job. He and his family hosted the 1995 and 1996 State Cross Country Championships at the Jones Farm at Pottsville before the new high school was built and he proudly presided over the 1998 State XC Meet that was run on the PHS campus and the adjoining Jones Farm. George Jones was the long-time chairman of the Arkansas Activities Association Track and Field Advisory Committee and served on the National Federation Track and Field Rules Committee, 1980-1983. His honors and recognitions include: 1996 inductee into the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame, Curt King Award from the Arkansas High School Coaches Association for athletic coaching excellence, 1996 Dr. Daniel L. Pilkington Award for outstanding service to Arkansas education; member of the Atkins High School Athletic Hall of Fame and recipient of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Award. In 1980 Jones authored and published the “History of the First Seventy-Five Years of High School Track and Field in Arkansas”. Though filled with 75 years worth of records and historical summaries, the first seventeen pages read so much like the speaking style of the author that one can almost imagine hearing the stories told first hand. Thank you, George S. Jones, for the legacy we enjoy because of you.
