Institutions should also consider requesting employment c<strong>and</strong>idates to sign a <strong>for</strong>m giving the<br />

prospective employer permission to obtain in<strong>for</strong>mation on the c<strong>and</strong>idate’s employment<br />

history, including copies of the c<strong>and</strong>idate’s per<strong>for</strong>mance reviews, <strong>and</strong> to contact the<br />

c<strong>and</strong>idate’s professional references. A signed release may relieve concerns <strong>and</strong> make a<br />

reference provider more willing to provide c<strong>and</strong>id in<strong>for</strong>mation regarding a c<strong>and</strong>idate’s<br />

suitability <strong>for</strong> work in a research environment. Again, the institution’s humanͲresources<br />

department <strong>and</strong> general counsel should be consulted.<br />

3.1.2 Reviewing Credentials <strong>and</strong> Professional Status of Prospective Employees<br />

Misrepresentations about work histories, education, <strong>and</strong> credentials are, un<strong>for</strong>tunately, not<br />

uncommon in the employment process. Since an honest representation of an individual’s<br />

background <strong>and</strong> experience speaks to trustworthiness, integrity, <strong>and</strong> reliability, factͲchecking<br />
