RECOMMENDATIONS a<br />
• Doppler ultrasound is <strong>the</strong> diagnostic technique that is currently<br />
recommended to steer <strong>the</strong>rapeutic decisions in relation to varicose veins of<br />
<strong>the</strong> lower limbs.<br />
• Thermal ablation techniques (laser, radiofrequency) and sclero<strong>the</strong>rapy may<br />
be recommended as alternatives for conventional surgery: <strong>the</strong> results are<br />
comparable in <strong>the</strong> medium term and <strong>the</strong> techniques may be carried out<br />
under local anaes<strong>the</strong>sia, or even without anaes<strong>the</strong>sia for sclero<strong>the</strong>rapy.<br />
• An adjustment of <strong>the</strong> list of billing acts is required that gives <strong>the</strong>se new<br />
techniques a place and promotes <strong>the</strong>ir use in an outpatient environment<br />
under local anaes<strong>the</strong>sia (or even without anaes<strong>the</strong>sia for sclero<strong>the</strong>rapy) for<br />
<strong>the</strong> treatment of varicose veins without complications.<br />
• Registration of serious complications and relapses is required to verify <strong>the</strong><br />
long term safety and effectiveness of <strong>the</strong>se new techniques (particularly as<br />
regards <strong>the</strong> use of foam sclero<strong>the</strong>rapy).<br />
• The current data does not allow recommendations in connection with <strong>the</strong><br />
use of compression in <strong>the</strong> treatment of varicose veins of <strong>the</strong> lower<br />
extremities.<br />
• Medication treatments are not recommended.<br />
