There are also a number of folders of correspondence concerning the early days of the George C. Marshall Research Foundation (filed under "Marshall Research Foundation"). b. Chronological This subseries consists of carbon copies of outgoing correspondence prepared for Marshall in his Pentagon Office. Much of the correspondence was composed by Colonel C. J. George; most of it was typed by M. L. Spilman. It is not known what percentage of the carbon copies filed here are also found in the general correspondence. Apparently, there was originally categorical correspondence (Invitations, Requests for Autographs and Photographs, etc.) for the retirement period similar to the categorical sections found in several previous subgroups. There is now no correspondence to form such a file, but there are nine folders of cross-reference sheets which indicate that such correspondence did exist. 3. SPEECHES, STATEMENTS, AND WRITINGS These are divided into those of Marshall, and those of others. Both subseries are arranged chronologically. Marshall did not make many speeches and did little writing after his retirement. The two items of most obvious interest in this series are his acceptance speech on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize; and his "Memorandum on China." This latter document concerns Marshall's experience during his 1946China Mission, and was written at the request of President Truman. 4. ENGAGEMENT AND CORRESPONDENTS RECORDS This series includes engagement books, an engagement calendar, and an address card file. This card file is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and includes: the correspondent's name; professional affiliation and title; and address. The form of salutation used in corresponding is also included. Any reference from this file to "file one" refers to a similar, previously prepared card file found with the Secretary of Defense papers. xxxiii
