Grand Exalted Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sons <strong>of</strong> Bitche<br />

<strong>The</strong> question posed in <strong>the</strong> cartoon was at least partially answered in<br />

Stuttgart, Germany in <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1945. <strong>The</strong>re in a mock coronation<br />

ceremony <strong>the</strong> first Grand Exalted Biggest Son <strong>of</strong> Bitche was proclaimed<br />

and installed in <strong>of</strong>fice, and <strong>the</strong> Grand Exalted Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sons <strong>of</strong><br />

Bitche was born. In those early days much pomp and ceremony was<br />

involved. <strong>The</strong>re was a Grand Exalted Littlest Son <strong>of</strong> Bitche, many o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

ceremonial <strong>of</strong>fices, and chapters were formed all over <strong>the</strong> Division.<br />

Basically, all 100th Division soldiers who had been with <strong>the</strong> Division in<br />

combat, before, during, or after <strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fabled Citadel <strong>of</strong> Bitche<br />

on March 15, 1945 were automatically members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Society. It was<br />

believed to be <strong>the</strong> first organization <strong>of</strong> its kind in <strong>the</strong> United States Army<br />

that was named for a World War II battle.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> war, and after <strong>the</strong> Division went home and was deactivated,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Society began to fade into memory. Enter Roland Giduz, 399-C, who,<br />

at <strong>the</strong> newly formed 100th Division <strong>Association</strong>’s first annual reunion at<br />

Raleigh, North Carolina in 1947, revived <strong>the</strong> Society idea on a more<br />
