The collaborative efforts, in turn, may
speed the development or improvement
of systems to detect and type rapidly
harmful BWAs, such as anthrax.

Women’s Narrative
Project Receives Grant
The University has been selected to
receive a $5,000 grant from Tomorrow’s
Leaders Today and the Scranton Area
Foundation. The grant supports the
Women’s Narrative Project at the
University’s Jane Kopas Campus Women’s
Center – a project that addresses the
community concern of the history of
labor discrimination against women as
well as women’s roles in the labor movement.
The University was selected by a
group of high school students representing
Tomorrow’s Leaders Today.
Founded in 1994 to provide a foru m
for exploring women's issues, the Ja n e
Kopas Campus Wo m e n’s Center sponsors
p rograms to address women's health and
other issues, including gender equality
and justice.

Students Honor Faculty with Teaching Awards
Two faculty members have
been selected by Scranton students
as this year’s recipients of
annual awards recognizing
excellence in teaching.
Michael D. De Mi c h e l e ,
Ph.D., Chair and Professor of
Hi s t o ry, has been selected
Teacher of the Year by the
Un i ve r s i t y’s graduating class of
2002.
Timothy J. Cadigan, S.J., Assistant
Professor of Biology at the University, has
been presented the Edward Gannon, S.J.,
Award for Teaching.
The Teacher of the Year Award, instituted
in 1996 by the academic support
committee of the University’s Faculty
Senate, honors a faculty member who
maintains high standards of academic
excellence and fairness and who, through
enthusiasm and dedication, inspires interest
in a given field of education. Dr.
DeMichele was nominated by secret ballot
of the University’s senior class.
“It’s an honor to be selected by the
graduating class to receive this award,”
said Dr. DeMichele. “I hope that the students
who have been in my classes have
enriched their educational experience at
the University.”
Dr. De Michele is currently completing
his 34th year of teaching at The Un i ve r s i t y
of Scranton. He has taught a wide va r i e t y
of undergraduate and graduate history
courses, ranging from the Constitutional
and Legal Hi s t o ry of England to the
Hi s t o ry of Contemporary World Politics.

He received the Alpha Sigma Nu Award
for Teaching Excellence in 1972, the
Presidential Award for Outstanding
Teaching in 1976, and the Dexter Hanley
College Teaching Award in 1977. He was
the University’s first nominee for the
national Council for the Advancement
and Support of Education (CASE)
Professor of the Year Award in 1985.
Dr. DeMichele’s writings have been
published in professional journals. He has
also given numerous presentations and
papers on various historical topics
throughout the United States and abroad.
The annual Gannon Award, established
in 1978 by the University’s chapter of
Alpha Sigma Nu, the national honor society
for students in Jesuit colleges and universities,
recognizes outstanding teaching

The residential facility
was constructed in 2000
by Sordoni Construction
Services, Forty Fort.
LeMessurier Consultants, Cambridge,
Mass., served as structural engineer, along
with H.S.A. Associates, Scranton, as the
mechanical electrical and plumbing engineer
and Ceco Associates, Scranton, as
civil engineer.
Mulberry Plaza, located on the corner
of Mulberry Street and Madison Avenue,
will be featured in a future issue of BSA’s
quarterly magazine ArchitectureBoston.

“I am honored that such

would think me deserving of
this award,” said Fr. Cadigan.
“This is a wonderful confirmation
of that which I love to do
– teach. The greatest honor is to
stand before students as their
t e a c h e r, one who is simply picking up the
g reat work already begun by their pare n t s ,
high school and grade school teachers.”
Fr. Cadigan joined the University in
1999 as an Assistant Professor of Biology.
For the past two years, he has participated
in the Faculty/Student Research program
at the University. The program allows
professors and students to collaborate on
research projects.
Fr. Cadigan is an active member of the
University’s Campus Ministry, participating
in daily and weekend Masses and special
Liturgies and services, and providing
spiritual direction to students, faculty and
staff. In addition Fr. Cadigan assists in
local parishes when the need arises and is
a spiritual director for some of the seminarians
attending St. Pius X. Seminary.
Before joining the University, Fr.
Cadigan was a graduate student and
teaching assistant in the Biology
Department at Georgetown University.
Fr. Cadigan’s works have been published
in the Jo u rnal of Health Sciences
and the Jo u rnal of Clinical Mi c ro b i o l o gy,
and have been featured in poster pre s e ntations
hosted by national pro f e s s i o n a l
o r g a n i z a t i o n s .

The University presented Frank J.
O’Hara Awards to seven people during
Alumni Reunion Weekend, 7 – 9 June .
O’Hara Awards recognize alumni and
others who have achieved distinction in
their professions or personal endeavors.
The Frank J. O’Hara Awards are named
for the late administrator who served the
University for 53 years. It is the highest
honor bestowed jointly by the University
and its Alumni Society.

New Education Programs Being Offered
Responding to a nationwide need for
special education teachers, the University
will offer two new education programs
beginning this fall.
A unique, combined five - year bachel
o r’s / m a s t e r’s program in special educat
i o n / e l e m e n t a ry education will allow graduates
to earn both a second credential and
a master’s degree. It is the only program of
its kind in No rtheastern Pe n n s y l va n i a .
The University is also introducing a
new master’s degree in special education.
Graduates of this comprehensive program
will receive a master of science in special
education and a Pennsylvania credential
for teaching exceptional students from
nine disability areas from kindergarten
through grade 12.
“This program should be highly attract
i ve for general education graduates interested
in immediate employment in an are a
of national need,” said Tim Ho b b s ,
Assistant Professor of Special Education.
Ac c o rding to state and national statistics,
the job market for special education teachers
is growing at a rate of 37 percent annually
throughout the nation. In Pe n n s y l va n i a
alone, there are currently about 830 job
vacancies in this field.
Dr. Barrasse is a partner with Great Valley
Cardiology, Scranton. She serves on the
medical staffs at Mercy Hospital, Moses
Taylor Hospital, Community Medical
Center, Mid-Valley Hospital and Marian
Community Hospital.
Dr. Barrasse, who is Board Certified in
C a rd i ovascular Diseases and In t e r n a l
Medicine, was named an Ex p e rt of
Subspecialty Field Pe n n s y l vania Section by the
American College of Cardiology in 1998. Sh e
was a member of the Board of Trustees of T h e
Un i versity of Scranton from 1977 to 1983.
“Because of the national shortage of
special education teachers, as many as 25
percent of special education classes are
currently taught by teachers who are not
specifically trained to teach special needs
children in mainstream classrooms,” said
Barbara Cozza, Ph.D., Assistant Pro f e s s o r
of Education at the Un i ve r s i t y. “T h e
Un i ve r s i t y’s two new programs prov i d e
o p p o rtunities for teachers to re c e i ve
a d vanced training in an important and rapidly
growing area of education.”
“Graduates of these programs will be
qualified to teach in a nationally significant
area of education – that of teaching
children with special needs in regular elementary
classrooms,” added Dr. Cozza.
Students enrolled in the combined bache
l o r’s / m a s t e r’s program have two options.
They can earn a bachelor’s degree in elem
e n t a ry education in four years and a mast
e r’s in elementary education and cre d e n t i a l
in special education in the fifth ye a r. Or,
they can earn a bachelor’s degree in special
education in four years and a master’s in
special education and a credential in elem
e n t a ry education in the fifth ye a r.
During their junior year, students can
apply to the combined bachelor’s/master’s

He is the Diplomat in Residence at
the U.S. Army War College, Center for
Strategic Leadership in Carlisle, Pa. He
also serves as Senior Fellow of the U.S.
Army Peacekeeping Institute.

John P. Ma rtin, Ed.D., G ’57,
Ma n c h e s t e r, N.J., re c e i ved the award for
education. Dr. Ma rt i n’s career in education,
which spans more than 45 ye a r s ,
includes teaching and administrative positions
at colleges, universities, and Catholic
schools in Pe n n s y l vania and New Je r s e y.
He is currently a Professor in the
Department of Interdisciplinary Studies
of the Graduate Program at the
University of Medicine and Dentistry of
New Jersey (UMDNJ) School of Health
Related Professions, Newark, N.J.
John J. Quinn, S.J., received the award
for University service. Throughout his
more than four decades of service to the
University, Fr. Quinn served as a professor,
dorm counselor, moderator of drama
and founder of the literary magazine
Esprit.

two graduate courses to contribute toward
both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Students must also pass a comprehensive
examination before the master’s degree
will be awarded.
Similarly, students enrolled in the
Master’s of Special Education program
can choose from two options. Individuals
currently certified in another area (for
example, elementary education) can seek
an advanced degree and certification in
special education. This option leads to a
Master of Science degree in special education
with a second specialized credential.
It requires 43 semester-hour credits in
course work.
The second option is for individuals who
do not hold an instructional certificate and
a re seeking a certificate to teach special needs
students. This option re q u i res 54 semesterhour
credits in course work .
All education courses at the Un i ve r s i t y
a re taught in Mc Gurrin Hall, a state-oft
h e - a rt facility with laboratories and classrooms
specifically designed for education

Fr. Quinn was the first Un i versity of
Scranton liaison officer with the Pe a c e
Corps in its earliest days. He conducted
student tours to London, counseled students
and chaired the change of gove rnance
to the new Faculty Se n a t e .
Kathleen Cu r ry Santora, Esq., ’80,
Washington, D.C., re c e i ved the award
for law. She is the Chief Exe c u t i ve
Officer of the National Association of
College and Un i versity At t o r n e y s
( N AC UA), an organization that includes
m o re than 3,000 attorneys engaged in
the practice of higher education law.
Before joining NACUA in 2001, she
served as Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer of the American
Association for Higher Education. She
also held various positions at
Georgetown University, including
Secretary of the University, Assistant to
the President for External Relations and
Assistant to the President.
Paul J. Shields, ’47, Jacksonville, Fl a . ,
re c e i ved the award for management. He
is Chairman of Copytronics In f o r m a t i o n
Systems, the world’s largest dealer of
Minolta Business Equipment. For the
past 12 years, Copytronics has been one
of the “Top 50” priva t e l y - owned companies
in No rth Fl o r i d a .
Prior to joining Copytronics, Mr.
Shields held distinguished positions as
National Sales Manager and Vice
President of Marketing for APECO, the
American forerunner of copy systems.
Terrence P. Zealand, Ed.D., G’72,
Howell, N.J., received the award for science
and technology. In 1987, Dr.
Zealand and his wife, Faye, founded
AIDS Resource Foundation for
Children, Inc.
Dr. Zealand has developed a nationally
recognized program for families
with AIDS and has traveled to Kenya to
supply medicines for health clinics.He is
the Acting Chair of the New Jersey
Governor’s Advisory Council on AIDS
and has served on the Newark Ryan
White Planning Council. The Zealands
were designated the 470 Point of Light
by President George Bush, Sr.

Catherine Ann (Cathy Manley)
Coffey ’86, President-elect of
the Alumni Society of The
University of Scranton, died
7 June from injuries sustained
in an automobile
accident in New Jersey.
A native of Scranton and
a resident of Madison, N.J.,
she was the wife of Edward J.
Coffey and the loving mother
of two daughters, Michaela Anne
and Claire Megan Coffey.
She was the daughter of Charles A. and
Rita A. (Novack) Manley, Scranton, and
the daughter-in-law of Edward P. and
Anne (Finneran) Coffey, Pearl River, N.Y.
Also surviving are her brothers Charles
J., Scranton, Patrick M., Archbald,
William J., Dunmore, and Michael, P.,
Scranton, as well as brothers-in-law,
sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Coffey graduated with honors
from Bishop Hannan High School in
1982. She earned a Bachelor of Science
degree with honors from the University
in 1986.
Leahy Awards Presented to
CPS Faculty Members
T h ree faculty members from the
Un i ve r s i t y’s Panuska College of Pro f e s s i o n a l
Studies (CPS) have been selected to re c e i ve
Leahy Center Re s e a rch Aw a rds for 2002 –
2003. The awards are presented annually to
CPS faculty members with funds from the
Ed w a rd R. Leahy, Jr., Center.
A fourth CPS faculty member has been
named the 2002 recipient of the Leahy
Faculty Award. This award is presented
annually for a two-year term, also supported
by the Leahy Center.
Timothy J. Hobbs, Ph.D., Assistant
Professor of Special Education, has
received an award for research entitled
“International Clinical-Demonstration
Classroom for Children with Disabilities.”
Dr. Ho b b s’ project aims to establish a
model classroom re p resenting “best pract
i c e s” for children with disabilities in
Georgia, a new independent state of the
former Soviet Union. Dr. Hobbs will use a
public school near Tiblisi State Pe d a g o g i c a l
Un i versity in Georgia to demonstrate
re s e a rch-based practices that promote educational
and social inclusion of childre n
with disabilities. No such class or comparable
clinical site currently exists in Ge o r g i a .

Carol Reinson, Assistant Professor of
Occupational Therapy, has received an
award for “The Pathways Project: A
Longitudinal Study of Developmental
Vulnerability.”
This project continues a multi-year
study that also received funding from the
Leahy Center. Her current research will
provide follow-up data on children and
families who are developmentally at-risk.
Follow-up visits will be conducted with
33 families to evaluate long-term outcomes
of case studies begun in earlier
research. The results of the study will be
reported in peer-reviewed journals and
presented at national conferences.

Professor and Chair of Counseling and
Human Se rvices, has been named the 2002
– 2004 recipient of the Leahy Fa c u l t y
Aw a rd. The award re c o g n i zes excellence in
teaching, re s e a rch and service in the
Panuska College of Professional Studies at
the Un i ve r s i t y. Dr. Morgan was named by
James J. Pallante, Ed.D., Dean of the
Panuska College, to re c e i ve the award, a
p o rtion of which provides funding for professional
deve l o p m e n t .

be NEH Visiting Sch o l a r
Mary F. Engel, Ph.D., Director of
Medical School Placement and the Office
of Fellowship Programs at the University,
is one of only 25 scholars and teachers in
the nation invited to participate in the
National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH) Institute, “Medicine, Literature
and Culture.” The Institute will be held
at the Penn State College of Medicine
campus in Hershey, Pa., from 8 July
through 2 August.
“ Medical schools have indicated a growing
interest in attracting broadly educated
students, and they emphasize that admissions
committees value strong pre p a r a t i o n
in humanities courses,” said Dr. En g e l ,
who is also an Associate Professor of
English and has taught English courses at
the Un i versity for 16 years.
“When pre-med students ask why medical
schools re q u i re at least two courses in
English, I often share with them the advice
a local oncologist gave our students a few
years ago: ‘You need to learn to listen to
your patient’s story. If you cannot understand
her story, you may cure the symptoms
but you will not heal the patient.’”
The Institute provides participating faculty
with practical experience and theore t ical
instruction in the fields of literature and
medicine. Pa rticipants are introduced to a
range of literary, cultural and theore t i c a l
re s o u rces for understanding medicine.
To this end, Dr. Engel recently taught
an Honors Program tutorial, entitled,
“Women & Medicine: A Literary
Nursing Student Receives “Hearts of Heroes” Aw a r d
In recognition of National Nurses Day on
8 Ma y, the Un i versity presented its first
annual “He a rts of He ro e s” Aw a rd to Je a n
Ha yes, a nurse at Me rcy Hospital, Scranton,
and a student at the Un i ve r s i t y. The award
seeks to re c o g n i ze and encourage nurses to
“tell their story.” Mrs. Ha yes, a resident of
C l a rks Summit, was selected based on exc e llence
in clinical skills, as well as in writing.
Mrs. Ha yes wrote a poem, entitled,
Me l a n o m a, reflecting on the disease that
Retrospective.” She is also currently
teaching an independent study course in
“Medicine and Culture.”
Pa rticipants at the Institute will explore
such issues as the culture of medicine and
the ways in which medical and ethics cases
shape both knowledge and practice. Clinical
activities will be coupled with pre s e n t a t i o n s
and discussions of re l e vant literary works.

The Un i versity of Scranton are continually
accepted to medical schools at rates we l l
b e yond the national average. The acceptance
rate for 2002 is already 95.3 perc e n t
of all applicants and climbing. For seniors
in the graduating class of 2002, the acceptance
rate is an unprecedented 100 percent.
According to Dr. Engel, the reason that
Scranton students achieve such a high
rate of acceptance to doctoral-level health
professions schools is “…because they
eagerly seek to learn as much as possible
about the complex field of medicine, to
serve others on campus and in the community,
and to share their understanding
with their fellow students.”
As an example, Dr. Engel notes that
“many of the recent graduates remain
actively involved in mentoring their colleagues
in the graduating class of 2003.
Recent graduates often stop by the office
to ask how they might assist current
applicants. They also participate in an
online discussion board where the rising
seniors ask questions about the process of
application to medical school.”

Seven student-athletes received the top
awards at the 11th annual Senior Student-
Athlete Banquet on Friday, 3 May, at the
John J. Long, S.J., Center.
Michael Burns (B rooklyn, N.Y.), Eric
Kunzinger (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Meghan
Quinlan (Glen Rock, N.J.) received the
2002 Frank O’Hara awards, which are presented
annually to the top male and female
athletes of the senior class. The award is
named in honor of Frank O’Hara, a 1925
graduate of the University who had a distinguished
career in a variety of roles at the
University for more than 50 years.

in honor of the late John J. Fitzpatrick, S.J.,
long-time friend and counselor of Royal student-athletes,
these awards are bestowed upon
the student-athletes who have demonstrated
outstanding leadership and who have give n
e x t r a o rd i n a ry service and contributions to
The Un i versity of Scranton community and
to society in general.
Patricia Donaghy (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.)
was selected the recipient of the 2002 Ron
Willensky Award, which is presented to the
senior student-athlete who consistently
undertakes to understand and improve the
human condition. The award is named in
honor of Ron Willensky, a native of
Scranton and a 1963 graduate of the
University, who was a lifelong fan of the
Royals and the Lady Royals.
Bu rn s, a four-year letterman on the men’s
swim team, re g i s t e red 27 first-place finishes
in dual-meet competition in his career and is
the Roy a l s’re c o rd-holder in the 1000
(10:35.02) and the 1650 (17:30.08) fre e s t y l e
e vents. He has also finished in the top 12 at
the Middle Atlantic Conference championships
eight times during his care e r.
Ku n z i n g e r, a thre e - year letterman on the
m e n’s soccer team, served as team captain his
junior and senior years. He was a first-team
a l l - Freedom Conference selection this past season
and was named a third-team scholar all-
American by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA). A two-time
member of the Middle Atlantic Confere n c e
Academic Honor Roll for Fall Sp o rts, he was a
second-team all-Freedom Conference selection
and a third-team all-Mi d - Atlantic Region by
the NSCAA his junior ye a r.
Quinlan, a four-year letter-winner on the
women’s soccer team, capped off an outstanding
career by breaking the NCAA
Division III all-time record for most minutes
played by a goalkeeper (7,713). A fourtime
Freedom Conference and NSCAA all-
Mi d - Atlantic Region selection, she holds the
Lady Royal all-time re c o rds for shutouts
(51.5), goals against average (0.548) and
f ewest goals allowed (41). She led Scranton
to a four-year re c o rd of 67-17-4 (.779),
which includes three Freedom Confere n c e
titles (1999-2001), a Middle At l a n t i c
C o n f e rence overall championship (1999)
and three NCAA Division III tournament
appearances, including a berth in the quart
e rfinals this past fall. She was the Fre e d o m
C o n f e rence Rookie of the Year in 1998 and
was named the league’s most valuable playe r
this past season.
Fo n t a i n e, a four-year letter-winner in vo l l e yball,
earn first-team all-Freedom Confere n c e
honors this past season as the Lady Royals won
the Freedom Conference title and advanced to
the NCAA Division III championships for the
second time in Scranton history. She was a
t h ree-time Freedom Conference Pl a yer of the
Week selection and served as team captain. Of f
the court, she found time to serve as a member
of the St u d e n t - Athlete Ad v i s o ry Committee,
Day of Di versity Planning Committee for
Student Government, Physical Therapy Club
and Collegiate Vo l u n t e e r s .
Petty, a four-year letter-winner in field
hockey, tied for the team-lead in defensive
saves this past fall as the Lady Royals
advanced to the championship match of the
Freedom Conference tournament. She
received the team’s most improved player
award her freshman year. She was a member
of a team that posted a four-year record
of 50-32, won an Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) championship (1998)
and qualified for the Middle Atlantic
Conference playoffs (1999). She is a member
of the University’s Honors Program,
Women’s Business Honor Society, Business
Leadership Program, and is a tutor in eco-
nomics, accounting and calculus for the
Learning Resource Center on campus.
Ma l c z y n s k , ia
four-year letterman on the
m e n’s lacrosse team, has been an integral part
of a Royal team that has posted 30 victories
over the last four years, including a Un i ve r s i t y -
re c o rd 11 wins during the 1999 season. Hi s
play on the defensive end was instrumental in
leading Scranton to a 9-8 re c o rd, including a
b e rth in the Eastern College At h l e t i c
C o n f e rence (ECAC) Southern Di v i s i o n
championship match this past season. He has
s e rved as a Eucharistic minister for Campus
Mi n i s t ry, Orientation aide, and Se a rch Re t re a t
team leader. He has vo l u n t e e red his time to
many organizations on campus, including the
Ha n d - i n - Hand Buddy program, Roy a l
Ambassadors and Commencement and
Ba c c a l a u reate committees.
Do n a g h y, a four-year letter-winner in field
h o c k e y, served as team co-captain last fall
and was named to the National Fi e l d
Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA)
Academic Squad. She also served as a Se n i o r
Class officer and a tutor of elementary school
c h i l d ren. Upon graduation, she plans to continue
her academic career at Tufts Un i ve r s i t y.
She has served as a Freshman Re t reat leader,
and has participated in service trips to
Cincinnati and Ec u a d o r. She accompanied a
close friend to occupational and physical
therapy sessions, which helped to shape her
decision to pursue a career as a therapist.

Liz Baumbach (Long Valley, N.J.), a
junior attacker on the women’s lacrosse
team, was named the 2002 Middle
Atlantic Conference Player of the Year.
Joining her on the first-team for the second
straight year is junior midfielder
Bridget Lee (West Nyack, N.Y.) . Senior
attacker Ali Burns (Bordentown, N.J.)
and sophomore attacker Marykate
Connolly (Cherry Hill, N.J.) were second-team
selections.
Baumbach broke her own Lady Royal
single-season records for most goals (75)
and most total points (101) in leading
Scranton to a 10-7 overall record and to a
second straight MAC and Eastern College
Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-
Atlantic playoff appearances. She led the
MAC in goals scored (4.41 per match)
and total points (5.94), was second in
assists (3.05), and tenth in ground balls
(4.35).
She is Scranton’s all-time leading scorer
with 176 goals and 61 assists for 237 total
points in 47 career matches. She is a twotime
second-team Metro Regional all-
American by the Intercollegiate Women’s
Lacrosse Coaches Association
(IWLCA)/United States Lacrosse (USL).

with 88 total points.
She was second in the MAC in assists,
third in total points (5.17) and tied for
sixth in draw controls (2.06). In addition,
she was recently voted to the Verizon
District II Academic all-America team for
the second straight year. This team honors
student-athletes who are at least a sophomore
and have maintained a 3.2 or higher
cumulative grade point average.
Burns finished third on the team in scoring
with 43 goals and 17 assists for 59 total
points. Her 43 goals this spring is the third
highest single-season total in Scranton hist
o ry. She also finished seventh in the MAC
in goals scored and tenth in total points. A
t h re e - year letter-winner, she concluded her
c a reer with 78 goals and 26 assists for 103
total points in 47 matches.
Connolly had 11 goals and three assists
for 14 total points and finished third on
the team with 63 ground balls. She has
started 34 of 35 matches in her two-year
career and has 27 total points on 20 goals
and seven assists.
Mark Malczynski (Iselin, N.J.) , a senior
midfielder on the men’s lacrosse team,
earned first-team all-Middle Atlantic
Conference honors.
Malczynski appeared in 15 matches and
finished tied for fourth on the team in
ground balls with 57. He also scored a
goal and assisted on three others from a
non - o f f e n s i ve position.
The Royals, led by fourth-year head
coach F. Warren Breig III, finished the
2002 season with a 9-8 overall record and
qualified for the MAC playoffs with a 6-3
league mark. Scranton also advanced to
the ECAC Southern Division championship
match, where the Royals lost to
Franklin & Marshall.
Megan Wasilik (Harrison, N.Y.), a
sophomore designated hitter on the softball
team, was named second-team all-
Freedom Conference. She started 28 of
30 games and hit .315, with 28 hits,
including eight doubles, two triples and
six home runs, as the Lady Royals of
third-year head coach John Foy finished
the 2002 season with a 14-20 overall
record and qualified for the Freedom
Conference playoffs for the second
straight year.

Scranton Students Identify Ways
to Save School Board $1 Million
At the request of members of the
Scranton School Board and the Scranton
School District’s adminstration, 14
University of Scranton Business
Leadership students scoured the district’s
healthcare costs, heating
costs and facilities
management procedures
for possible savings.
At a public meeting,
the students presented
their recommendations
to save over $1
million in the Scranton School District’s
budget.
“This has been the best demonstration
that I have seen of how a university can
partner with a community,” said School
Board Member Todd O’Malley, Esq.,
after the students’ presentations.
Mr. O’Malley, Business Manager Gregg
Sunday and Superintendent John
Williams, Ed.D., approached University
of Scranton Professor Gerald Biberman,
Ph.D., Chair of the management/marketing
department, seeking input from the
University in January of this year.
Under the guidance of Dr. Biberman,
Associate Professors Robyn Lawrence,
Ph.D., accounting, Robert McKeage,
Ph.D., and Len Tischler, Ph.D., management/marketing,
the students compared
the Scranton School District’s budget to
similar school districts in the United
States. “Best practices” at leading businesses
and universities were also considered.
The students’ analysis even reviewed
the type of lights used in the district’s

Qualifications for the award include 51
percent ownership of a legal business for
the past three years. Nominations can
include any business located in Bradford,
Bucks, Carbon, Columbia, Lackawanna,
Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery,
Northampton, Pike, Schuylkill, Sullivan,
Susquehanna, Tioga, Wayne, or Wyoming
counties. Women can nominate themselves
or be nominated by others.

The Business Leadership Program at
The University of Scranton is a highly
selective program that accepts only 15
sophomore students each spring. The students
then begin a two-year curriculum
the following fall semester that includes
specific sections of key business courses
taught from a leadership perspective,
leadership seminars, a mentor/internship
program, and an independent leadership
project.

Harrisburg and broadcast statewide on

Margarete Zalon, Ph.D. , Professor of
Nursing, has been selected as a
Hartford Institute Geriatric Nursing
Research Fellow for 2002. The fellowship
includes participation in a summer
seminar, the opportunity to work with
prominent geriatric nursing researchers
as well as a $5,000 research prize.

competitive Eisenhower
Grant for Professional Development to

Catholic schools located in Scranton.
Each state administers the federal
Eisenhower Grant Program.

the collaborative grant to revitalize math
education at a demonstration held in Jon
Hawk’s classroom at South Scranton
Intermediate School.
“This is a truly integrated approach,”
said David A. Wiley, Ed.D., Professor and
Chair of the Education Department of
the University and co-author of the grant
proposal with Barbara Cozza, Ph.D.,
Associate Education Professor.
The initiative will use proven “handson”
techniques that involve real-life situations
to teach math concepts. A total of
70 faculty, students and teachers from the
University, the Scranton School District
and Catholic schools in Scranton will
attend a nine-day academy from June 17
to June 25. Techniques learned will be
implemented during the 2002/2003
school year. Parent forums will also be
conducted throughout the school year to
help parents understand the process of
learning mathematics.
