THE EFFECT OF TALL BUILDINGS ON SOLAR ACCESS METU JFA 2012/1 97<br />

usually hard to perceive <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>effect</str<strong>on</strong>g>s that shadowing can have <strong>on</strong> daily life.<br />

However, assessing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quantity and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> characteristics <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> shadowing is<br />

vital for understanding <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>effect</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>tall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>buildings</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>solar</strong> <strong>access</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

changing character, it is important to analyse shadows with a holistic way<br />

in order to evaluate changes at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>solar</strong> <strong>access</strong>.<br />

To assess <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> total impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> overshadowing it is important to find<br />

dimensi<strong>on</strong>, directi<strong>on</strong> and durati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> shadows <strong>on</strong> surrounding<br />

by masses <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>tall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>buildings</str<strong>on</strong>g> crowded al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main traffic artery <strong>on</strong> its<br />

western border (Figure 1).<br />

Study Area<br />

There are approximately 290 residential <str<strong>on</strong>g>buildings</str<strong>on</strong>g> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> study area,<br />

eighteen <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m are multi-storied, comprising between four and twelve<br />

stories. The northwest secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> study area is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> intersecti<strong>on</strong> point <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>tall</str<strong>on</strong>g> and low-rise <str<strong>on</strong>g>buildings</str<strong>on</strong>g> (Figure 1).<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re about 8 <str<strong>on</strong>g>tall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>buildings</str<strong>on</strong>g>, but <strong>on</strong>ly six <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m with elevati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

over 100m are taken into c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>, as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se are adjacent to low rise<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>buildings</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

These <str<strong>on</strong>g>buildings</str<strong>on</strong>g> are;<br />

• İş Bank towers (IS): three towers, <strong>on</strong>e is 181m and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> two o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs are<br />
