23-year old pilot was a student from Tri-State College in Angola, IN. Pilot and student<br />
left the airport in Angola bound for Benton Harbor but crashed into a field on the Reber<br />
Farm in Royalton Township. cxciii The 2 injured passengers climbed out of the wreckage<br />
and walked about ½ mile towards a farmhouse when they were spotted by <strong>Berrien</strong><br />
<strong>County</strong> Sheriffs Deputies. cxciv Probable Cause(s): Continued VFR flight into adverse<br />
weather conditions and inadequate preflight preparation and/or planning. Other factors<br />
include: Weather – low ceiling, fog. cxcv<br />

29-year old student pilot was practicing take-off and landings at Ross Field when the<br />
plane suddenly plummeted to the ground from about 200-300 foot elevation. Probable<br />
Cause(s): Mismanagement of fuel, fuel starvation, failed to obtain/maintain flying speed,<br />
complete engine failure/flameout. cxcvi<br />

68-year old pilot and passenger departed South Bend enroute to Flint during a normal<br />
cruise. Witnesses reported seeing plane flying in a southwesterly direction, then banking<br />
to head northeast when it lost control. The plane hit trees and then hit the wall of Twin<br />
City Pattern Works located at the corner of Higman Park and Northshore Drive. Workers<br />
inside the building reported seeing a glow of fire before plane hit the building. cxcvii<br />
Probable Cause(s): Pilot continued VFR flight into adverse weather conditions: low<br />
ceiling and fog, high obstructions. Observed flying low in fog before hitting trees and<br />
factory where plane burst into flames. cxcviii<br />

December 14, 1972<br />
Loss of life: 1<br />
32-year old pilot departed Ross Field enroute to Apache Junction, AZ during normal<br />
cruise when it appeared the plane lost power to an engine shortly after take-off. Upon<br />
trying to return to the airport, the plane went down into utility poles and high voltage<br />
power lines near the Paw Paw River and Riverside Road. cxcix Probable Cause(s): Pilot<br />
failed to obtain/maintain flying speed, improper in-flight decisions or planning, improper<br />
emergency procedures, partial power loss. Witnesses reported seeing engine missing<br />
when aircraft attempted to return back to airport. Impacted power lines and burst into<br />
