Segment length curse
Long chronologies often built from
shorter series with a mean
“segment” length much shorter
than entire chronology
This creates difficulties in
comparing long term trends as
low frequency climate signals may
be removed by detrending
Maximum frequency that can be
recovered is about one third of the
mean series length
Average age of core segments in a 1500 yr long chronology
from Northern Scandinavia (Briffa et al., 1992)
