<strong>Richard</strong> was born September 14, 1935 to Clarence and Mathilda<br />
(Anderson) <strong>Burau</strong> in Flaxton, where he was raised and educated.<br />
Some years later he earned his GED and also completed the Heating<br />
and Air Conditioning program at Bismarck Junior College.<br />
As a young man he worked at various farms in the area and later<br />
moved to Kansas where he worked in a flour mill. But, for most of<br />
his working years he was involved in the oil field, starting in the mid<br />
1950’s as a roughneck up until he retired from Koch Industries years<br />
later as truck driver. Too, for a few years he helped rebuild the<br />
Minuteman missile sites around North Dakota.<br />
On February 9, 1956 <strong>Richard</strong> was united in marriage to Lois<br />
Peterson in Bowbells. The couple lived in Tioga a short time before<br />
establishing their home in Columbus, ND where they have since<br />
lived all these many years.<br />
<strong>Richard</strong> simply loved being outdoors from daylight to dark. He<br />
loved elk, deer, and bird hunting and fishing year round, especially<br />
with his two boys, Jim and John. He also trapped for many years. He<br />
was a wonderful gardener, known for his tomatoes and cucumbers.<br />
Also, he was a big believer in exercise and liked to go for long walks<br />
or ride bicycle.<br />
<strong>Richard</strong> was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the<br />
NRA, the Minnesota Laborers’ Union, and Faith Lutheran Church in<br />
Columbus, ND.<br />
Surviving <strong>Richard</strong> are his wife, Lois, of Columbus; his five children,<br />
daughter, Debra (Gaylen) Oas of Williston and their children, Tara,<br />
Jared and Joshua; daughter, Kathy Brodal of Scottsdale, AZ and her<br />
children, Stephanie, Jeremiah and Cody; daughter, Darla (Marvin)<br />
Westerness of Columbus, ND and their children, Melinda and<br />
Corey; son, Jim (Karen) <strong>Burau</strong> of rural Williston and their children,<br />
Lindsey, Jennifer and Darin, and son, John (Pam) <strong>Burau</strong> of Entiat,<br />
WA and their children, Justin and Jordan; and thirteen greatgrandchildren,<br />
McKenzie, Sierra, Victoria, Hunter, Jaxon, Madison,<br />
Kylie, Khloe, Jacob, Cale, Haylee, Bentley and Halle. A brother,<br />
Lelan <strong>Burau</strong> also survives <strong>Richard</strong>, as do numerous cousins.<br />
<strong>Richard</strong> was preceded in death by his parents.<br />
