FORDHAM IN GRANADA Based at Universidad de Granada’s Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM), the programs provide an exceptional opportunity for students to experience and to learn about Spanish culture in context. Distinguished professors from Fordham University and Universidad de Granada deliver quality instruction in small class sizes. Individualized tutoring is offered to students to aid in their adjustment to the new academic setting. Participation in a number of cultural events, excursions, and trips conducted by professors with expertise in literature and the arts will complement the rigorous course work. SPRING SEMESTER PROGRAM OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION Students are required to take fi ve courses while in Granada. One of the fi ve courses, “Spain in Context” is taught by the Fordham in Granada Director, Dr. Rafael Lamas. This course is open exclusively to program participants. The other courses will be taken at Universidad de Granada’s Centro de Lenguas Modernas with the option to take up to two in one of the Universidad de Granada’s many departments (Facultades) depending on the student’s academic interest and language profi ciency. Participants may pursue courses from among the following disciplines: Art History Culture Economics Geography History Language Literature Politics Sociology Students may also take a course at the Conservatorio de Música de Granada. LANGUAGE IMMERSION Upon arrival and prior to the start university courses, participants will engage in an intense language immersion program. TERTULIAS Once a week students and Dr. Lamas will host a prominent Spanish fi gure (artist, writer, musician, professional) and discuss the various developments within that person’s fi eld. Past guests included artist José Freixanes, writer Andrés Neuman and Laura García Lorca director of the Federico García Lorca Foundation. SUMMER PROGRAM OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION Based at Universidad de Granada’s Centro de Languas Modernas, this month-long program is designed for Spanish language students. Students will enroll in different classes, receiving instruction at their appropriate level of Spanish language competency from beginner to advanced. Classes will meet four hours per day, fi ve days a week for a total of 80 hours. In addition, participants attend cultural visits to the Alhambra Palace, the Cathedral, Royal Chapel, and the Albaicín neighborhood. Cultural excursions are organized by Professor Lamas, who will also supervise participants’ academic progress. BOTH PROGRAMS OFFER STUDENT SERVICES HOUSING An integral component of these programs is the full immersion living arrangement. Semester and Summer participants will live with a Granadan family for the semester. Homestay families provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as a supportive environment for participants to acclimate to their new surroundings. Families are carefully selected by the Universidad de Granada in consultation with Dr. Rafael Lamas, Director of Fordham in Granada. FIELD TRIPS Participants will engage in a number of cultural excursions within Granada as well as take short trips to other parts of Spain. For Spring, participants may visit some of the following cities: Sevilla, Córdoba, Úbeda, Baeza, Ronda, Fuente Vaqueros, Alpujarras, and Guadix. In Spring 2011, Fordham in Granada students went to Morocco for a week, where they met with local students and lived with Moroccan families. DATES & PROGRAM FEE program duration late May — late June application deadline February 15 th Includes Tuition, Homestay with Meals, Orientation, Excursions, Insurance, Cell Phone, On-Site services of Resident Director and Tutors Fordham in Granada’s offi ce is centrally located and close to the Universidad de Granada. Participants are offered individualized tutoring services and can expect their academic progress to be closely followed and guided by program staff. Intercambio (conversation exchange activities) are also coordinated through this offi ce as well as through the CLM. All program participants have Universidad de Granada insurance, and are granted access to all Universidad de Granada facilities. LOCATION CITY OF GRANADA Located in the Spanish region of Andalucía, Granada is a recognized World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and a cornerstone of Western history and culture. It was a unique site where Jews, Christians, and Muslims lived together and developed the arts and sciences in the Middle Ages. The Alhambra Palace, the Albaicín neighborhood, the Cathedral, and the numerous Baroque churches of the city are testimonies of its rich past, which continues to be alive through its vibrant university community. Indeed, Granada can be called a “university town” with 240,000 inhabitants of whom about 60,000 are students. The city provides an extremely rich historical and multicultural standpoint that will stimulate participants’ intellectual growth. UNIVERSIDAD DE GRANADA The Universidad de Granada is the third-largest university in Spain and one of the largest recipients of Erasmus scholarships in the entire European Union, creating a diverse student population where program participants can expect to fi nd an enriching semester abroad. Emperor Charles V founded the University in 1531 upon the previous Arab University built by Yusuf I in the 14th century. Among its strengths, the departments of Spanish Literature, Maghreb and Arabic Studies, Musicology, Women’s Studies and Visual Arts are the most prominent.
