The the lighting industry still relies on a paper documentation
and procurement process that was developed when electric
typewriters were still considered “high tech”. With open network
standards and data protocols, a seamless digital connection could
be threaded from initial design concepts through to long-term long­term
maintenance. For example, specifiers and contractors will upload
the fixture layouts and feature selections from a BIM BiM model
directly to fixture manufacturers; such direct transfer of data will
be critically important as architectural projects demand evergreater
quantities of customized, digitally-fabricated digitally­fabricated fixtures. As as an
example for the control systems, after designers have “modeled”
their systems they can record and upload their choices directly
into the lighting fixtures and controls at the construction site,
accurately transferring the designer’s intention and forgoing the
tedious manual commissioning process. Ultimately, ultimately, the reduced
cost of developing and commissioning such complex systems will
cause a flourishing of dynamic lighting installations.

Together, together, these three centers of innovation will enhance the
creative options for specifiers while reducing the intangible
project costs that limit broader adoption of innovative lighting
technologies. Two two key advances, the ability for devices from
multiple manufacturers to communicate and the ability to
quickly simulate these complex systems, will give rise to a
third advance, a modernized specification and commissioning
process.
To to reach this vision of the future, the industry must
collaboratively develop a connective framework of intelligent
and open standards, to allow creative specifiers to “mix and
match” the best capabilities and innovations from throughout
the industry. There there will be tremendous friction to this process,
but the industry must persevere: Together, together, the combination
of radical technologies plus a smart framework of modern
standards will finally bring us to a new era of lighting.
