Joel Abelson<br />
Head Coach<br />
Joel Abelson enters his first season as head coach of the Skyforce. He was<br />
introduced as the 15th head coach in franchise history on August 10 after<br />
spending the past five seasons as an associate head coach/assistant coach in<br />
the <strong>NBA</strong> Development League.<br />
Abelson served as associate head coach of the Idaho Stampede the past two<br />
seasons under former Skyforce guard Randy Livingston. He was an assistant<br />
coach in Idaho the previous two seasons under Bryan Gates (2008-09) and Bob MacKinnon (2009-10).<br />
He broke into the <strong>NBA</strong> D-League as director of basketball operations with the Tulsa 66ers in 2007-08<br />
working under Joey Meyer following a basketball operations internship with the Charlotte Bobcats in<br />
2007.<br />
The University of Michigan graduate was an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors summer league<br />
entry in July and in prior summers trained collegiate and professional players at the Bob Hill<br />
Basketball Camp (2009, 2010) and Impact Basketball (2008).<br />
Darren Kohne<br />
Assistant Coach<br />
Darren Kohne enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Skyforce. He<br />
joins the professional ranks after working in Division I college basketball the<br />
past 12 seasons.<br />
Kohne served as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for the men’s<br />
basketball team at Central Michigan University from 2006-12. For three<br />
straight years (2009, 2010 and 2011) and four times overall (2007), CMU’s<br />
recruiting class was ranked atop the Mid-American Conference by hoopsonline.<strong>com</strong>. Prior to his sixyear<br />
run at CMU, Kohne was an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin State University (2003-06) and<br />
High Point University (2002-03) in addition to serving as an administrative assistant at Bowling Green<br />
State University (2000-02).<br />
Kohne also has AAU and high school coaching experience. He was the head coach of the T-Town<br />
Boyz AAU program from 1993-00. The 1998 squad won the NAYB national championship and a total<br />
of 12 players during his tenure went on to play at the collegiate level. The Toledo, Ohio native was an<br />
assistant varsity coach for the boy’s basketball team at Bowsher High School (1999-00) and girl’s<br />
basketball team at Notre Dame Academy (1998-99).<br />
The 35-year-old earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management (2000) and master’s degree in<br />
Business Administration (2003) from the University of Toledo.
