Route 9W rollover
A short section of Route 9W in
Selkirk was closed for about
two hours after a tractor-trailer
rollover accident around
1:15 p.m. on Dec. 31,
according to the
Bethlehem Police Department.
Slippery roads were cited as
the cause of the accident, which
occurred near the intersection
with Route 396.
The driver of the tractor-trailer
sustained minor injuries but
refused medical attention.

Other arrests
The Bethlehem Police
Department arrested Douglas N.
Roest, 21, of 20 Stonington Road,
Voorheesville, and charged him
with DWI and speeding violations
on Sunday, Dec. 27.
Police observed Roest’s
vehicle traveling northbound on
the Slingerlands Bypass doing
75 in a 55 and later failing to
reduce speed for road conditions,
according to police. Roest
allegedly failed to recognize the
patrol car’s emergency lights
and police had to use a spotlight
before his car pulled over, police
said.
Roest did not appear dressed
for the heavy rain in a brown
t-shirt and jeans with no jacket,
and his clothing appeared dry,
police said. Police also detected
an odor of alcohol on his breath
and observed him as having
bloodshot eyes, according to
arrest reports.
Roest allegedly said that he
had had one rum and coke at the
Township Tavern and one rum
and coke at a friend’s house in
Guilderland. Police administered
fi eld sobriety tests and took Roest
into custody, and a breath test
at the station allegedly revealed
his BAC to be 0.15 percent,
according to police.
Police allegedly found a plastic
bag containing marijuana on
Roest during processing, and
charged him with possession of
marijuana. He also had rolling
papers in his wallet and made
an oral admission to smoking
marijuana earlier, police said.
Roest was scheduled to appear
in Bethlehem Town Court on
Tuesday, Jan. 5.
The Bethlehem Police
Department arrested Amanda
L. Piela, 17, of 380 Delaware
Ave., Delmar, and charged her
with DWI, speeding and driving
in the shoulder of the road on
Wednesday, Dec. 30.
Police dispatched to check
an area off of Elm Avenue
and Jericho Road in Selkirk
for a vehicle that had traveled
off the roadway found Piela’s
vehicle in a culvert ditch on Elm
Avenue, according to police.
Piela displayed glassy eyes,
slurred speech and impaired
motor function when interviewed
by police and stated she was
going home and just came from
a friend’s house where she had
had one beer, according to arrest
reports. She failed fi eld sobriety
tests and was placed into custody,
police said. Piela was transported
to the Albany County Sheriff’s
Office in Voorheesville for a
breath test since the machine
at the Bethlehem police station
was not available, and a breath
test showed her BAC to be 0.09
percent, according to police.
Piela is scheduled to appear
in Bethlehem Town Court
on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Her two
passengers were transported
home by their parents and Piela
was transported to her residence
by police, according to arrest
reports.
Alexander J. Kernozek, 49,
of 78 Old Stage Rd, East Bern,
NY was arrested Thursday Dec
24 for DWI. Police responded
to a call at 3:46 p.m. for a person
being intoxicated while operating
a Ford F-350 pick-up truck at the
Sunoco gas station on Western
Ave. The pick-up truck was
observed heading into Altamont.
With their lights and sirens
one Altamont police attempted
to stop the vehicle; however
Kernozek allegedly refused to
pull over. According to police,
after Kernozek struck a mailbox
on Main St. in Altamont, police
forced Kernozek to stop his
vehicle by pulling in front of
him.
Eventually Kernozek exited
his vehicle and failed field
sobriety tests administered by
police. According to police a
BAC test perform on Kernozek
yielded a result of 0.20 BAC.
After being taken into custody
by Guilderland Police Kernozek
allegedly banged his head on the
back window of the cruiser in an
attempt to see how much trouble
he was in. Kernozek was charged
with DWI and Aggravated DWI,
both misdemeanors. Kernozek
will be arraigned in Guilderland
Town Court on Thursday, Jan.

Frank Cannavo, 43, of 410
Helderview Drive, Albany, NY
was arrested on Thurday Dec.
24, for DWI. According to police
Cannavo was pulled over after
failing to signal. Police also
observed his vehicle had fl at tired
on the rear-drivers side of the
car. After pulling over Cannavo
police sensed a strong odor of
alcohol coming from Cannavo.
After failing fi eld sobriety tests
Cannavo was arrested for DWI.
A subsequent chemical test
performed by police revealed a
BAC of 0.11. Cannavo will be
arraigned in Guilderland Town
Court on Thursday Jan 7.
