God’s <strong>Law</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Millennium 49<br />

millennial<strong>is</strong>ts teach <strong>the</strong> individual person every aspect <strong>of</strong> God’s <strong>Law</strong> and<br />

watch <strong>the</strong> results!<br />

If postmillennial<strong>is</strong>ts do not take into account <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Law</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

Millennium and its bearing on <strong>the</strong> character and purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Law</strong> in<br />

h<strong>is</strong>tory in general, <strong>the</strong>y cannot argue validly that <strong>the</strong>ir reason for doing th<strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>is</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y do not want to become postmillennial<strong>is</strong>ts believing in God’s<br />

sanctions in h<strong>is</strong>tory. They ra<strong>the</strong>r have to deal with <strong>the</strong>ir antinomian (from<br />

Greek ‘anti’ = ‘against’ and ‘nomos’ = ‘law’) position, which does not<br />

allow <strong>the</strong>m to realize <strong>the</strong> central role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Law</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Millennium, even if<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir favorite texts on <strong>the</strong> subject teach it.<br />

Premillennial<strong>is</strong>ts mostly argue against postmillennial<strong>is</strong>ts that <strong>the</strong> Millennium<br />

<strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> God’s grace, not <strong>of</strong> men’s work. If Jesus comes back<br />

before <strong>the</strong> Millennium, He will be <strong>the</strong> one who inaugurates it. If He comes<br />

after <strong>the</strong> Millennium, <strong>the</strong>y argue, it <strong>is</strong> men who inaugurate it. (No postmillennial<strong>is</strong>t<br />

would accept th<strong>is</strong> description <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> position. He would prove<br />

God to be <strong>the</strong> central figure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Millennium just by <strong>the</strong> very texts we are<br />

d<strong>is</strong>cussing at <strong>the</strong> moment. But th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> not our topic here.) If Jesus comes<br />

back before <strong>the</strong> Millennium, Mic 2,1-4 and Is 2,2-4 still mean <strong>the</strong> same.<br />

For a premillennial<strong>is</strong>t <strong>the</strong>y mean that Chr<strong>is</strong>t will spread <strong>the</strong> <strong>Law</strong> (here <strong>the</strong><br />

Old Testament <strong>Law</strong>, as we d<strong>is</strong>cuss Old Testament texts). It <strong>is</strong> through <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> that Chr<strong>is</strong>t will change <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nations. It <strong>is</strong> through <strong>the</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />

that Chr<strong>is</strong>t will bring peace and wealth to <strong>the</strong> earth. The Millennium does<br />

not appear through a miracle, in <strong>the</strong> sense that <strong>the</strong>re will be peace without<br />

anybody knowing how it developed, but <strong>the</strong> Millennium comes through <strong>the</strong><br />

miracle that God spreads H<strong>is</strong> <strong>Law</strong> to all peoples and causes <strong>the</strong>ir hearts to<br />

accept <strong>the</strong> <strong>Law</strong>.<br />

<strong>the</strong> heavenly state <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church, or <strong>is</strong> to be understood spiritually as description<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church on earth. If th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> true, our texts have an important<br />

message: <strong>the</strong> mark <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church on earth or in Heaven <strong>is</strong> that God teaches<br />

H<strong>is</strong> <strong>Law</strong> to her and she obeys! If <strong>the</strong> Millennium <strong>is</strong> to be understood spiritually,<br />

<strong>the</strong> lesson <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> texts <strong>is</strong> that to be spiritual means to be changed by<br />

God and H<strong>is</strong> <strong>Law</strong> and to live according to H<strong>is</strong> <strong>Law</strong>!
