In het Amsterdam van de Gouden Eeuw ontwikkelde de Sefardisch-joodse
graveur Salom Italia (Mantua, 1619) een nieuwe vorm van versiering
voor de op perkamenten rollen geschreven tekst van het bijbelboek Ester.
Dit verhaal over de joodse ballingschap in het oude Perzië en de redding
van de joden door de slimme koningin Ester spreekt nog steeds tot de
verbeelding: ieder voorjaar wordt het wereldwijd door joden gevierd met
het vrolijke Poeriemfeest.
Salom Italia’s Esterrollen zijn rijk geïllustreerd met triomfb ogen,
afb eeldingen van de hoofdrolspelers, verhalende scènes en vignetten
met Nederlandse landschappen. Zijn originele decoraties weerspiegelen
de succesvolle integratie van Spaanse en Portugese joden in hun nieuwe
thuisland Nederland. Nog altijd zijn Italia’s Esterrollen een geliefd
verzamelobject. Nu zijn zes van deze internationale topstukken voor het
eerst samengebracht in Amsterdam, omringd door werk van Nederlandse
kunstenaars uit Italia’s tijd.
During the Dutch Golden Age in Amsterdam, the engraver Salom Italia,
a Sephardic Jew born in Mantua in 1619, created a new form of decorating
the parchment scroll that tells the biblical story of Esther. This tale

of Jewish exile in ancient Persia still appeals to the imagination: the
salvation of the Jews by the clever Queen Esther is celebrated each year
by Jews around the world on the joyous holiday of Purim.
Salom Italia’s Esther scrolls are lavishly illustrated with triumphal
arches, pictures of the main characters, narrative scenes, and vignettes
with Dutch landscapes. His original decorations refl ect the successful
integration of Spanish and Portuguese Jews into their new homeland,
the Netherlands. Even today, Italia’s Esther scrolls are coveted collectors’
items. Now, for the fi rst time, six of these world-class masterpieces have
been brought together in Amsterdam, accompanied by the work of Dutch
artists of Italia’s day.
