Augie Nieto has achieved much in his
life and gained admiration and success
from becoming the “Henry Ford” of the
fitness industry. While in college he
developed the Lifecycle which began the
cardiovascular craze.
Than in 2005 Augie was diagnosed with
Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS. Augie
has turned his entrepreneur talents into
forming a foundation called Augie’s Quest
to help find a cure for ALS.
Augie is a role model for both adults and
children. The way he lives his life teaches
us to crystallize our priorities.
Augie’s Quest, in conjunction with the
Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), is
an aggressive, cure-driven effort singularly
focused on treatments and cures for
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou
Gehrig’s Disease). For more information,

Sofia Cappello is 9 years old and attends
Curtis school in Los Angeles, California.
Augie’s Flower Pot is a story bred out of
a 3rd grade school project. She lives with
her mom, dad, sister Francesca and their
three dogs in Brentwood. She enjoys art,
horsebacking riding and swimming.

Augie lives in a four story house right on the ocean. He
sold his car and remodeled his garage to build an elevator
because he knew his muscles would not be able to let
him walk up the stairs at some point. Augie’s elevator is
really cool.
Augie and Lynne have three dogs named Hazel, Toby and
frank. Augie lets the dogs lick him all over his face!

Augie makes the world go around and
around. Augie has the best sense of humor ever. I
personally think he likes the classics. His favorite

Augie tells lots of jokes and he likes to laugh and smile.
Augie can make you laugh and cry in the same minute.
C HAPTER 1
Who is Augie?
Augie was born Augustine Louis Nieto in 1958 in Anaheim
California. His birthday is february 15th, the day one of
the greatest men ever set foot on land! He is the best man
because he is going to help to find a cure for ALS.
In high school Augie was over weight. One of his favorite
things to do when he was nine was eat. When he got a
little older he decided he wanted to loose some weight
and get healthy.

C HAPTER S I x
The most important
people in Augie’s life
are his wife Lynne
and his four children.
He wants to live a
life that his children
will look up to and
be proud of.
In Conclusion
Augie is very brave in how he is living his life. He
wants to do as much as he can to make a difference in
this world. He feels that it is the teachers, friends and
family who care for you, make you feel good and offer
encouragements that are the most important people in
your life.
Also, he has learned through his experience that it isn’t
important how you look or how fit you are. What’s
important is who you are inside and how you can make a
difference in this world or even in one person’s life.
Lastly, Augie turns the worst into the best. Some people
would have gotten mad and stayed mad when they found
out they had ALS. Augie remains positive and wants to inspire
people to live a meaningful life.
Augie created a Pop Quiz to take which will help you to
understand what is important in life.

Cycle. He started to
sell his bikes with
a partner out of
the back of his car.
Pretty soon he had a
big company.

CHAPTER TWO
Augie’s Diagnosis
So just when it seemed like Augie was living on top of the
world he got some really bad news. He found out he had
ALS. Unfortunately people always die from this muscle
disease and most die within 18 months to 5 years.
They call ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Lou gehrig’s
disease. It gradually paralyzes the voluntary muscles,
including those that allow you to speak, swallow and breathe.
The scientists on Augie’s research team think the “glue” that
holds the nerve cells to the muscles in people who have
ALS just doesn’t stick any longer and that is why they can’t
move their muscles anymore. So far nobody knows why
you get the disease or how you stop it or slow it down.
When Augie learned he would die from this disease he
went through the 5 different stages of grief.

My parents say one of the tests of a great person
is not how they deal with success but how they
deal with adversity or failure! I say, Augie is one
great person! He has taught me lots of things
about life and living.
