<strong>Plan</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong> and Reduce <strong>Teen</strong> <strong>Pregnancy</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mississippi</strong><br />

Media Advisory Subcommittee<br />

The Media Advisory Subcommittee will research and provide data on the <strong>in</strong>fluence of the media,<br />

e.g., social networks, onl<strong>in</strong>e communication, tweet<strong>in</strong>g, sext<strong>in</strong>g and enterta<strong>in</strong>ment, on teen<br />

relationships. Market<strong>in</strong>g concepts and resources <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a web site, brochures, videos, will be<br />

developed <strong>to</strong> educate youth, parents, youth leaders, legisla<strong>to</strong>rs, clergy and community leaders<br />

understand how adolescents establish, perceive and value relationships and <strong>in</strong>teract with friends,<br />

family and romantic partners. The mission of the Media Advisory Subcommittee is <strong>to</strong> ensure that<br />

everyone has access <strong>to</strong> accurate and appropriate <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>to</strong> prevent teen pregnancies <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>State</strong> of <strong>Mississippi</strong>.<br />

Goals:<br />

1. Develop talk<strong>in</strong>g papers, white papers, handouts, brochures and press releases that the<br />

Governor, his staff, key legisla<strong>to</strong>rs, Blue Ribbon Task Force Committee members, <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

organizations, faith-based and state agency heads can use <strong>in</strong> dissem<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation on<br />

the Task Force, its purpose and agenda.<br />

2. Research and utilize exist<strong>in</strong>g advertis<strong>in</strong>g dollars with<strong>in</strong> organizations and agencies <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g exist<strong>in</strong>g television, radio and pr<strong>in</strong>t media contracts and spots.<br />

3. Develop an advertis<strong>in</strong>g campaign <strong>to</strong> target pre-teens, teens, teen parents, parents and<br />

educa<strong>to</strong>rs. The campaign may be developed with current resources with<strong>in</strong> the Task Force or<br />

additional funds, as available. The use of an outside advertis<strong>in</strong>g agency may also be<br />

employed. The campaign, depend<strong>in</strong>g on available funds and partners, hopes <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude a<br />

comprehensive web site, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, pr<strong>in</strong>t media, e.g., billboards,<br />

brochures, flyers, posters, mobile apps and video and radio spots. L<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>to</strong> the web site will<br />

be <strong>in</strong>cluded on various other sites <strong>to</strong> promote traffic.<br />

Action <strong>Plan</strong><br />

1. Cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> modify and dissem<strong>in</strong>ate the message <strong>to</strong> target audiences.<br />

2. Use Task Force leaders and the Governor’s office <strong>to</strong> convey the message <strong>to</strong> the public.<br />

3. Ref<strong>in</strong>e the advertis<strong>in</strong>g campaign while cont<strong>in</strong>ually updat<strong>in</strong>g and moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g social media<br />

sites <strong>to</strong> ensure the message is reach<strong>in</strong>g teens effectively.<br />

4. Identify and widely use identifiable spokespersons for the advertis<strong>in</strong>g campaign.<br />

5. Develop promotional events <strong>to</strong> engage the public <strong>in</strong> the goal of reduc<strong>in</strong>g teen pregnancy;<br />

make recommendations <strong>to</strong> the Task Force for their presence at key events <strong>to</strong> talk about the<br />

mission and purpose of the Task Force.<br />

The subcommittee will respond <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation requests regard<strong>in</strong>g youth programm<strong>in</strong>g and policy,<br />

available resources, federal and state youth-related <strong>in</strong>itiatives and other <strong>to</strong>pics.<br />

STRATEGY 4:<br />

Promote positive youth development, youth leadership and access <strong>to</strong> career opportunities while<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g job opportunities for teens and teen parents.<br />
