Nicolò Paganini’ s artistic personality is characterized by the dualism of his
language, even underlined by his contemporaries (Liszt, Schumann, Berlioz).
While he was able to make his instrument sing by an incomparable lyricism,
often inspired by simple and pure melodies, on the other hand he could express
an almost violent passion together with an unknown technical virtuosity.
Somebody might think that he was possessed by the devil.
Hektor Berlioz, as many other important artistic personalities of that time,
believed that Paganini played the guitar masterfully as well as the violin.
In his pieces for guitar, we can find all the features of the above dualism.
The suggested programme includes the better pieces written for guitar and,
particularly the Ghiribizzi M.S. 43, the Sonates M.S. 84 and the Grande Sonata
M.S. 3 for guitar and violin, this last played for solo guitar .
The pieces for solo guitar by Nicolò Paganini are not so famous compared with
the big composers’ of that time. Their recent edition, about 1980, could be made
only after the incredible adventures that the manuscripts incurred before being
bought by Italian Government in the Seventies.
