It may not look like it yet, but the new WECC will be rocking with
the community come spring. Here’s a look behind the scenes as
our new digs take shape.
. . . and retain the character of the original building.
We were delighted when The North West Company (NWC)
stepped forward to support the WECC’s redevelopment.
The support of NWC will help us create a community centre
that provides expanded cultural programming and opportunities
for youth, including Aboriginal youth, along with much
improved facilities for emerging Canadian artists and
Winnipeg arts patrons.
NWC has long been a fixture in the area, through its Giant Tiger
store just down Ellice Avenue from the WECC. The company is
known not only as a leader in community retailing, but as one
of the largest private sector employers of Aboriginal peoples
in Canada. Thank you NWC for your commitment to our
neighbourhood!

Thanks to assistance from Duxton Windows, the new WECC
will continue to sport the peaked windows that have graced
the building since its days as a church.
With the help of Duxton, we’re able to replace these unique
windows with high performance, energy efficient windows.
Not only will they be a lasting tribute to the building’s history,
they’ll be “green” too!

Start the New Year with The Duhks
It’s hard to believe that 2008 is almost over! But it’s probably not
hard to believe that our new building won’t be opening until the
spring (buildings have a way of taking longer than planned, don’t
they?!), and so we will continue to present both concerts and
community programs in other venues for a while.
To kick off 2009 we’re pleased to be working with our friends at
the Winnipeg Folk Festival to bring hometown heroes The Duhks to
Winnipeg to celebrate the release of their new album, Fast Paced
World, on January 9 & 10 at the Park Theatre.
Building Community
The WECC has continued to present concerts and workshops
free of charge for local community groups and schools in
the west central neighbourhood. In October, over 20 youth
participated in an African Drumming workshop with Coffieman.
This fun afternoon ended in a small dance party, as Coffieman
demonstrated some of the more difficult rhythms! In December
over 300 students from Sister MacNamara School trudged
through the snow to attend a Fubuki Daiko Concert. The walk
in the cold was well worth it, as these kids were treated to a 50
minute Taiko Drum performance that included lessons about the
history of the drums, and introduced them to a fun ‘prankster’
character from Japanese folklore. Both of these events were a lot
of fun for the participants, and the WECC is looking forward to
more programming once we’ve moved into our new home!
