Ea COMMUNI TY New hunting regulations released ByhmthBeswetherick The Ministry of Environment has set new hunting reg ulations for 1996-97 which includes limited entry foi grizzly hunting. Environment Minister Paul Ramsey announced thc changes last week. The most significant changes to this year’s huntint rules are: All open seasons on grizzly bear hunting have beer replaced by limited entry hunting as part of the neM grizzly bear conservation strategy. Management unit boundaries in some regions ham been changed to make boundaries more recognizable ir relation to ground features. Changes are noted in tht regional sections of the hunting synopsis. Restrictions on duck hunting have been eased, going to a daily bag limit of eight ducks, rather than six, and E possession limit of 16 ducks rather than 12. Increases in waterfowl populations have enabled hunting regulations to return to these former levels. As well, due to safety concerns resulting from a grow- ing cougar population, the bag limit has been increased from one to two cats on Vancouver Island and season: have been standardized and extended throughout thc island. The 1996-97 regulations will be published in the B.C< Hunting Regulations synopsis which should be avail- able during the week of July 29 at B.C. Environment offices, government agents and other hunting licence outlets. Hunting regulations are changed each year to address conservation requirements and to improve hunting opportunities where conservation is not a concern. Proposed changes to the regulations are discussed with hunters, guide outfitters and other affected inter- ests. Regulation changes do not affect first nation rights to hunt. The team has won the first round of playoffs and could be on its way to the Founders Cup. Founders Cup. The team took Tier I1 gold in last year’s cup, played in St. Catherine’s, Ont., and Joseph says he thinks the team has a very competitive chance of making it this year. The only barrier is money. “Funding is really low right now. We’re not in as good shape as we were last year.” To aid its fund-raising efforts, the team formed a non-profit society late in the season. The local five-member team of Bob ‘aulkner, Ross Nicol, Robert Hartvikson, L‘hloe Lanthier and Alex Blodgett have now been endorsed by Salomon and Blackcomb Mountain for the eight-day, 480-kilometre race. ”We’re really thrilled about it,“ said Faulkner, a part-time Whistler resident. ”Salomon is taking a major position for the race, bringing in a bunch of market- ing people,” he said. “Everything is just falling into place.” In addition to providing the team with equipment for the race, the skiing giant has also added to the team’s training income. Polar, a company which produces heart rate monitors, is also aiding the team with equipment and funding. With a little over a month before the race begins, Team Salomon Blackcomb has now moved its training into high w gear, Faulkner said. Eighty-one teams are expected to participate in the international extreme adventure race, Aug. 24-31, which features a variety of disciplines including running, horseback riding, mountain biking, glacier and mountain climbing, whitewater rafting and canoeing. Over the July 13-14 weekend Faulkner and teammate Hartvikson participated in the Sea to Sky Mountain Bike Trail Ride from D’Arcy to Squamish, completing the two-day event in just over nine hours. ”It kind of puts things back in perspective,” Faulkner said. ”Training weekends aside, you tend to forget the pain and we were feeling pretty beat up by five o’clock because of the heat and dehydration.” Faulkner said he and Hartvikson tried to do as much of the ride as possible using off-road routes such as the Soo, Wedge and Upper Cheakarnus. “By the time we got into Squamish we were feeling pretty fried ... it was a good trial by fire.” The team, now training seven days a d week with regular climbs up North Vancouver’s Grouse Mountain, runs and cycling trips, tuned their whitewater rafting skills this weekend in Squamish, shooting for class four certification. Faulkner also plans to compete in an Ironman event in California this week. “It’s a pain threshold thing,” he said. However, despite the team’s high level of fitness, Faulkner admitted his own attempts to bulk up €or the Eco- Challenge have not been too successful. “After you go out arid race for nine hours, no matter what you do, you look like a scarecrow,” he said, adding he’s currently seeing a nutritionist to stop his weight loss. If current weather trends continue - with temperatures in the mid to high 30s - Faulkner said teams will face similar dehydration problems as were encoun- tered during the 1995 event in Utah. ”If it’s hot like this it will be interesting - we’ll be battling dehydration and the glacier.” As to the course, the commercial print- ing consultant said a lot of people know bits and pieces of the overall route but II nobody knows the cntirc circuit. ”We’re going to be doing a lot of scrCiinbling to get through this OIIC,” he said. “It’s kind of scary looking forward to it in some ways.
