Beck 24 - In the Name of God
A paparazzi photographer is brutally murdered in the middle of the night, under a
bridge.
Beck, on his way to the murder scene, gets a phone call from Gunvald. Gunvald is at
home and asks Beck to come and see him. After a quick visit to the murder scene Beck
goes home to Gunvald. Gunvald explains that he has gone up the wall.
The murder investigation continues without Gunvald. There are no cameras or
computers left in the photographer’s flat. Beck points out that someone must have been
in the flat after the murder. The forensic technicians find a jacket in the photographer’s
car. In the jacket are a note block and two pens. One of the pens holds a USB memory
key.
The photographer has downloaded plenty of photos of celebrities on the key and the
Beck team go through them. Oberg looks in to find out how things are going when she
suddenly catches sight of a couple of photos to which she reacts very strongly. Oberg
discretely slips the photos into her folder without anyone noticing and then she goes to
her room. When Beck comes in to Oberg’s room to talk about Gunvald, Oberg hides the
photos.
Later that evening Oberg sits in front of Klingström’s computer and makes a phone call
and makes an appointment with someone. Bodil who is on her way home sees Oberg
sitting at Klingström’s desk.
When Oberg arrives home that night she calls her husband Sten who is away at their
cottage. Oberg tells him she has something she has to tell him, but that she doesn’t want
to do it over the phone.
The Beck team continue their investigation into the murder of the photographer. Oberg
wants to contact Gunvald and when he doesn’t answer the phone Oberg goes home to
him. But when Gunvald tells her that he is thinking of quitting the police Oberg won’t
hear of it. On her way from Gunvald, Oberg makes a somewhat cryptic phone call from a
public phone and arranges to meet someone in her home later the same evening.
That evening a woman, Andrea Lundmark calls at Oberg’s home. Andrea has a CD with
her. Someone outside the villa is watching them.
Oberg is upset when Andrea leaves the villa. She calls Beck and asks him to come and see
her. Beck rushes out of his flat but is stopped by the Neighbour who sits crying on the
landing. When Beck has finally comforted the Neighbour he hurries off to Oberg’s villa.
When Beck rings the doorbell and no one answers he goes inside the house and finds
Oberg lying lifeless on the floor, shot in the chest! Beck immediately phones for an
ambulance.
Klingström and Bodil are attending a talk about equality. Andrea Lundmark is on the
panel. In the middle of the lecture Klingström receives an alarm call. Bodil and
Klingström hurry off.
The doctors do all they can but can’t save Oberg’s life. Oberg’s husband Sten is told the
terrible news. The Beck team are in a state of grief and shock at the hospital.
The forensic technicians and the crime-scene photographer are working in Oberg’s villa.
The Beck team arrives at the villa, still in a state of shock. Oskar has already started the
investigation.
Beck and Klingström go to the forensic institute. They are surprised to see Gunvald there,
but he leaves almost immediately.
Oberg’s murder is given wide coverage in the media. Beck is determined that it will be he
who leads the investigation. They will find the murderer at all costs. Beck and Oskar start
to search Oberg’s room.
Klingström discovers that some of the celebrity photos are missing from the file they
downloaded. Bodil recalls that she saw Oberg sitting in front of Klingström’s computer.
Had Margareta taken the missing photos? And if so, why? The photos are downloaded
once more from the memory key. One of the photos is of a man and woman kissing each
other passionately. The other photo shows the same couple just seconds after the kiss.
Both Bodil and Klingström recognise the woman on the photo. It is the conservative
politician Andrea Lundmark who was at the hearing about equality.
Beck shows the photos to Oberg’s husband Sten. He tells Beck that Andrea is an old
friend of Oberg. But the man on the photo is not Andrea’s husband.
Beck and Klingström visit Andrea and shows her the pictures. Andrea, shocked over
Oberg’s death, lies to them and says nothing about her visit to Oberg the evening of the
murder. She has to admit though that she has a love affair outside her marriage. The man
on the photo is Erik Gindorf but Andrea denies that Oberg could have known that they
had a relationship.
The Beck team learn everything they can about Andrea Lundmark but they find it
difficult to believe that the motive for the murder might have anything to do with
Andrea’s unfaithfulness. They take a closer look at the photos of Andrea Lundmark and
they discover the small lapel-pin Andrea is wearing. It is in the form of a special cross, a
cross-potent. Beck is absolutely certain that he has seen that cross before. And suddenly
he remembers that the same symbol was in one of Oberg’s folders when they searched
her room. The folder Oberg had in her room had been given to her at a seminarium she
attended. Bo Sevemark, National Police Co-ordinator, held the seminar that was about
right-wing extremist organisations!
The Beck team contacts Bo Sevemark who explains that the cross-potent is a symbol the
Lot Brotherhood have taken up. They are an ultra conservative Christian right-wing
organisation. In general terms their message is that moral panic reigns in Sweden. They
are against abortions; they hate hbt people and immigrants. Their object is to strike terror
in all homosexuals and stop them appearing in public. Sevemark doesn’t know who the
head of the organisation is but he has a film on a CD secretly taken when a pastor
preaches a sermon and expresses his hatred of hbt people. He shows them the film. The
pastor is Erik Gindorf!
The Beck team immediately bring in Erik Gindorf to be interviewed. He denies that he
has anything to do with the murder of Oberg and that he has an alibi for the evening of
the murder. But Beck is certain that both Erik Gindorf and Andrea Lundmark are lying
and that the Lot Brotherhood are involved in the murder of Oberg. In the middle of Beck
briefing his team Gunvald walks in and asks if they need reinforcement.
Andrea Lundmark is questioned again. The Beck team believe that Oberg contacted her
and told her that she knew both about her affair with Erik Gindorf and her link to the Lot
Brotherhood. And that Oberg was going to hand this information over to the police
investigation, which would have had devastating consequences for Andrea’s political
career. Andrea has an alibi for the evening of the murder so they have to set her free.
Meanwhile, Gunvald has contacted Erik Gindorf, listened to his sermon and expressed
his support for Gindorf’s views on hbt people. Gunvald says he wants to help and starts
to infiltrate the Lot Brotherhood under a false name. Gunvald gets to meet the leader,
Carl Borsin. He tells Gunvald he has to pass a test to show them that he really hates
faggots. Gunvald contacts Beck and asks him to check up on Carl Borsin. At the same
time, Lillemor, Gunvald’s sister, calls him and asks him if he can help her and fetch
Simone after school. When Gunvald fetches Simone he is tailed by one of Borsin’s men.
That evening, Gunvald breaks in to Borsin’s office to try to get technical evidence. What
he doesn’t know is that the office has CCTV surveillance. Gunvald finds a small hard
drive in a locked cabinet and takes it with him. Gunvald, on his way out, meets Borsin
who has been warned by the alarm about the burglary. Turmoil and a shoot out take
place in the stairs but Gunvald manages to escape with the hard drive.
Borsin and his men tail Inger when she comes to pick up Simone who is going to play
with Vilhelm, Inger’s son. When Gunvald is on his way home he gets a message on his
Smartphone. A ten seconds long sequence of a weeping Simone played on the phone’s
display.
Simone was kidnapped in Inger’s home. Beck and Gunvald rush there. Inger and Vilhelm
are tied to two chairs with tape. Gunvald looks for Simone in Borsin’s office and in the
church but can’t find her anywhere. Back at the police station Gunvald gets a phone call
and is about to leave when Beck stops him. Gunvald explains that he has to go alone. He
has the hard drive they want in exchange for Simone. Beck lets him go but first Beck
gives Gunvald a bullet-proof vest.
Gunvald meets Borsin and his man at the appointed place. As soon as Gunvald gets the
information via his cell phone that Simone is released and is safe with Lillemor he hands
over the bag with the hard drive. Then the police, led by Beck, storm the rendezvous.
Turmoil and more shootings. Borsin takes to his heels, chased by Gunvald. The police
finally catch Borsin’s men and Beck takes care of the hard drive. But Gunvald and Borsin
have disappeared.
Gunvald comes outside the Forensic institute dragging with him an exhausted Borsin, his
hands tied behind his back. He frog-marches Borsin inside the institute, locks him up in a
body cold chamber and gets him to admit it was he who shot Oberg. Then Gunvald
leaves the Forensic institute leaving Borsin locked up inside the body cold chamber.
Andrea is questioned and admits that she was lying. She met Oberg the evening of the
murder and offered her a deal: a CD with information and proof against the Lot
Brotherhood but with Andrea’s name was erased from the document. Later Borsin
contacted her and threatened her if she didn’t remain silent. He told her that he had
tailed her and shot Oberg and taken the CD back. She came in contact with the Lot
Brotherhood through Erik Gindorf and she shared their views.
The police pick up Erik Gindorf in the middle of one of his sermons. Oljelund gets a
phone call about strange sounds coming from the mortuary. Gunvald comes to the police
station and hands over his police ID and other police equipment to Beck. Before he leaves
he asks how Beck knew where he was going to meet Borsin. Beck explains that they had
put a tracking device inside the bullet-proof vest.
Oberg’s funeral is a very solemn affair. Many people have come to bid their last farewell.
Gunvald gets hold of Beck after the funeral and regrets a little that he handed over his
police ID. Beck takes the view that it was just a time out.
