A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
“I am a Lincoln Railsplitter and a citizen of Splitter Nation!”
These words erupted from my mouth recently and received a
loud round of applause from an audience of Superintendents
from across the state. I had just finished presenting the good
news about Lincoln Consolidated Schools.
Would you like to hear the good news, too? There is much to
celebrate this spring at LCS.
Most of you know our history. You know how we began with
an educator’s dream of reaching and teaching rural students.
You know how that dream united thirteen independent school
communities into one consolidated school district. We take
pride in our pioneering spirit, of being a district of firsts, of being
a premier learning community.
The reorganization of our elementary schools and programs enabled us to create a Spanish Immersion
Kindergarten and First Grade classroom. We are encouraged by the success of the program and are preparing to
expand our offering to include second grade.
A new group has formed to work on opportunities for improved communications and relationships across our
school community. This PR and Marketing Task Force is comprised of parents, faculty, and Board of Education
members. It is an action oriented group and has already launched a variety of initiatives such as our Parent
Information Nights.
We have embarked on an ambitious quest to increase student achievement by continuing to improve what
happens each and every day in our classrooms. Our faculty meets regularly in groups to examine the data
related to teaching and learning. These groups are called data teams. They ask very challenging questions
and determine answers that improve instruction. This is truly exciting work which will lead to positive results for
students.
I am energized by the professionalism of our staff, by the excitement for learning that I witness daily in our
students, and by the sense of community I feel when I declare, “I am a Lincoln Railsplitter and a citizen of Splitter
Nation!”
Calling System
SIGN UP!
Last year Lincoln Schools implemented an automated calling
system to improve parent/school communications. With the
Edulink Intouch Parent Notification system you quickly and
efficiently receive important school information directly to your
family via phone, email, or text message.
As part of the fall registration process you received a letter with
information on how to register your own contact information
online. If you need a new letter, contact your school office. You
will be able to set your preferences on how you would like to
receive messages from Lincoln Schools.
Uses of this system include snow day notifications, student
attendance, and school events. We are very excited to bring this
communication tool to you!
LINCOLN SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM RETURNS IN 2013
Lincoln offers a unique opportunity for your child to learn Spanish in elementary
school. Lincoln Consolidated Schools has started an exciting new program
to immerse students in the Spanish language while teaching the elementary
curriculum. This program started with a single K-1 classroom in September 2012
as part of Bishop Elementary School’s multi-age program. We will add a classroom
each year until we have a K-5 program. As the program grows, we will evaluate
opportunities to expand Spanish offerings into middle school and high school.
Immersion teaches the same curriculum as any other classroom. The primary
difference is that the language of instruction is Spanish in this classroom. Specials
and assemblies remain English for these students. The Spanish Immersion
students are also fully a part of the multi-age Bishop Elementary School and will
experience the High/Scope approach to curriculum delivery. One of the significant
benefits of this type of program is that children are immersed in a second language
when they can learn it naturally. Natural learning is how we learned our native language. It is the easiest way to
learn a second language before our brains age, making second language learning more difficult. Students in these
programs develop a near native fluency that, when nurtured, can allow bilingualism to flourish.
The program has been very successful over the course of the first year with parents giving very positive feedback and
very impressed with how rapidly the children have grown to understand Spanish language and respond appropriately.
Many parents with children in the program are excited about enrolling their younger children in future years.
The benefits of being bilingual have been studied a great deal over the past few decades and include
• Positive effect on intellectual growth.
• Greater flexibility in thinking, better listening, more sensitive to language
• Improved understanding of native language
• Opportunities to meet new people
• Understanding of other cultures and appreciation for differences
• More prepared for high school and college
• Improved job opportunities and salary potential
To learn more, attend a Spanish Immersion Information Night or contact Jeremy Reed (jeremy@
lincolnspanishimmersion.com). Information night will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 18 in the Bishop Elementary
School Media Center. Visit www.lincolnspanishimmersion.com to learn more about language immersion and its
benefits.
CENTRALIZED
ENROLLMENT
With the start of the school year, we implemented a
centralized enrollment process for grades K-12 to better
serve all of our families, both district residents and through
school of choice. ALL enrollments are now taken at the
Business Office located in Brick Elementary (west end
offices) at 8970 Whittaker Road, Ypsilanti between 8:00
a.m. and 3:30 p.m. See box for documents you will need
to bring with you.
While the process will differ a little in terms of the required
paperwork depending on what grade level your student is
enrolling in, or whether or not you are a resident or school
of choice parent, you will now come to one place to do
everything.
You can check online for enrollment forms and more
information at www.lincolnK12.org.
POWERSCHOOL PARENT PORTAL SINGLE SIGN-ON
PowerSchool has introduced a new single sign-on for parents. This means that parents
can have one login to access all of their children’s grades and attendance (grades 6-12)
in one place. Also, parents and guardians will no longer have to share logins as each
parent or guardian can setup his or her own unique login and password.
On MARCH 12th, current account logins will be disabled and parents will need to create
a new single sign-on account. Instructions will be available on our website to assist with
this process. Student logins and passwords are not affected by this process.
PowerSchool has gone mobile! The PowerSchool for Parents app is available for
download from the Apple Store and compatible with the iPhone®, iPad® or iPod
touch®*. This app will not work until the single sign-on accounts are activated on March
12th.
BISHOP ELEMENTARY UPPER HOUSE SCIENCE
Three of the Bishop Upper House teachers, Abby Smith, March Wells, and Heather Smith, are participating in
the University of Michigan ELECTS program this year. ELECTS – Elementary Educative Curricula for Teachers
of Science – is a grant program sponsored by the National
Science Foundation. It focuses on inquiry-based teaching
methods and how the approach impacts students’ conceptual
understanding and scientific practices. It’s an ambitious
teaching method, but it’s proving to be an excellent program
for both teachers and students. The program is using
Smithsonian Institution’s Science, Technology, and Children
(STC) materials for two different units: electrical circuits and
ecosystems.
In October and November, for the electrical circuits unit, these
fourth and fifth grade students made their own filaments and
test circuits, and then worked in teams to discover hidden
circuits. Students then used an index card, a paper clip, two
brass fasteners, two washers, chip clips, and a complete
circuit to build a functioning switch. Students built their own
flashlights based on circuit drawings they developed in teams
of two and using their knowledge of batteries in parallel and
series, decided if they wanted to build a light that would be
brighter or would last longer.
This has been an amazing program for teachers and students alike. Teachers are committed to the success of
this program, and students are enthusiastic, fully-engaged in their learning, and are soaking up new knowledge
and discoveries.
THE UNITY WALL AT MODEL ELEMENTARY
“Have you happened to see the most beautiful (Bulletin Board)
in the World?” I think the song says GIRL; however, when you
see the “WALL OF UNITY” bulletin board, which is on the wall
opposite of the office door, I think you would change the words
to the song as well!
We are celebrating the rich tradition of ancestry and ethnicity
by showcasing “Family Pictures” of all of our MODEL
FAMILIES. They are absolutely stunning and you just get a
warm and fuzzy feeling every time you walk by it and see yet
one more gorgeous family picture posted.
The idea behind this project is to showcase the wonderful
amount of diversity we have represented at Model Elementary.
“As a veteran teacher, I didn’t always have the beauty of
seeing the rainbow of color in my children, and the knowledge
that many first generation Americans bring with them into this
country! It is like watching Dr.. Martin Luther King’s dream come true, right in front of me!” states Mrs. Kim Porter,
emphatically.
It is a proven fact, with much research to back it, that children have raised levels of self esteem when they see
other people that look like them, whether it be a famous person on a poster, or another family whose picture they
see on the board. We teach “A sense of Community” all year long in Kindergarten and pre-K and what better way
to do it than showing off our gorgeous community that represents almost every single continent!
We offer many thanks to the very talented Miss Carol for so nicely creating our collage with different colored and
designed mats for the pictures that she puts up daily. We see the beauty in her creation; can you imagine how
boring it would be if it was done in one color and one design? Makes you think of what it would be like to have
a classroom of all one color and background. It is the diversity that exists in our school and our classrooms that
allows for so many wonderful lessons and projects to be carried out with such a touch of “unique” input from all
the fabulous places from which we come!
TRAGEDY FALLS ON A “MODEL” FAMILY…. EVERYONE LENDS A HELPING HAND!
“Devastation” would be the only word one could use when pulling up to your house and seeing only the frame
that used to hold your home and all your personal belongings, and the fire trucks spraying down what USED to
be your kitchen, living room, and bedrooms. The home burned to the ground within thirty minutes. Luckily, there
were no family members in the house.
The affected family was one of our own. The child came to school the next day and told everyone in her
class about what happened. Staff members checked in on the family immediately and then began looking for
community resources to help them out. The family was grateful for any help the school could find for them.
“My classroom phone began ringing by 4:15 with parents calling to ask what they could do.” Mrs. Hicks stated. “I
couldn’t believe how many of the kids went home and told their families about the situation and how fast these
parents/families acted. These little ones were little missionaries!” Mrs. Hicks reports that within an hour she had
nine families with bags of clothes for the kindergarten child. “Next,” says Hicks, “Came the phone calls about
what kind of toys did she need; what did the grandmother need; families offering complete sets of dishes, pots/
pans, and appliances. It was unbelievable to see everyone just push everything aside to help out a family in
need.”
Finally, when it seemed the dust had settled, the final call came in for the night. Mrs. Hicks says that her mouth
literally fell to the floor when one of the parents in their classroom called to let her know that her sister wanted
to GIFT a trailer home to this family. “Mind blowing is all I can say...random acts of kindness that will never be
forgotten by any of us.” said a proud Mrs. Hicks.
We work on being “Bucket Fillers” every day, which is part of a book about imaginary buckets that we all carry
around, good deeds and words fill your bucket up, and mean things empty your bucket. One little girl said to her
mom, “Mommy, I want to fill her bucket by giving her my dollhouse so she has something fun to play with!”
“I am just so proud of my kids for going home and telling their parents that someone needed help and all the
selfless acts I saw happen in just a few hours is something I will never forget.” The family is in good spirits and
is obviously ready to move into their new home. It’s always a blessing when a tragedy can bring about so much
good. It proves to you that we do live in a world full of GOOD people.
BUDDY READING AT BRICK
Eight special adults from the Community Support and
Treatment Services of Washtenaw County come to Brick
Elementary for part of the day each Wednesday. These
individuals eat lunch with their helpers before going to an
empty classroom where groups of children from four different
classrooms come and read to them. Eight children at a time
from Mrs.. Brown’s, Mrs. Lehto’s, Mrs. Engelbert’s, and Mrs.
McKelvey’s classes take turns reading with these buddies
while they are here. It is a great experience for everyone
involved. The children get to practice their reading skills, and
the adults enjoy hearing the children read. Pictured reading
together here are first grader Ava and her buddy Denise.
Breakfast @ Lincoln!
If there was a way to be less hurried in the morning, would you take advantage of it? If there was a way to
improve your child’s grades, would you consider it worthwhile? Breakfast at school could be the answer!
Finding the time to fit a healthy breakfast into your child’s daily routine is probably just as difficult as fitting it into
your own. Studies show that children who acquire the breakfast habit early are less likely to develop illness, while
successful in maintaining a healthy weight, good grades, solid attendance, and overall performance.
Breakfast is available at all buildings within Lincoln’s district. The price is $1.20 and menus can be found at each
school or on our website at lincolnk12.org under the Foodservice tab. If your children qualify for free or reduced-
priced lunch, they also qualify for free or reduced-priced breakfast!
THIS PROGRAM IS AN EXTENSION OF LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL
LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL ADVISORY CLASS
On your student’s second semester schedule, you will notice a new class called “Advisory,” which was
implemented during this semester at Lincoln High School. Advisory is part of our redesign plan, data driven, and
state recommended for academic improvement. Advisories have been shown to improve school climate and
communication, improve parent/community contact, and is a school-wide initiative that will reach all LHS students.
An advisory period is a scheduled time given during the school day to make connections between staff-students,
teach soft skills (study skills, time management, PBIS goals, anti-bullying), explore career development, and
monitor academic progress. This is a research-based concept, which improves communication, school climate,
student support, and academic achievement. Advisory at LHS will occur on Tuesday, starting on 1/29, between
2nd and 3rd hour for 40 minutes, and the lessons will be consistent building-wide in every class/teacher.
The LHS community is excited to see what Advisory can do to improve our students’ experiences, and how this
can put our school on the road to further success!
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CELEBRATED AT BRICK ELEMENTARY
The annual program of remembrance of the life and leadership of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was
presented twice in the beautifully restored Brick Auditorium on January 18th by Brick Elementary students from
Ms. Curmi’s fourth grade class. The students have studied his life, legacy of non-violence, and leadership in the
civil rights movement in America. Each student, on stage, alone at the podium, using a microphone, gave their
thoughts and ideas about the impact the life of Dr. King had on all of us. A slideshow photo-biography of the
history of Dr. King, his family and short life, set to music, followed the students’ portion of the show. The photos
included many of Dr. King himself as he grew up, his beloved family, the famous march on Washington, and
many other unknown photos from his remarkable and inspirational life. The music chosen to honor his legacy
included ‘”What the World Needs Now is Love” by Dionne Warwick, “We Shall Overcome’’ by Joan Baez, “A Place
in the Sun’’ by Stevie Wonder, and ‘’Dream On” by Arrowsmith. Portraits of Dr. King drawn by the students, and
picket signs designed by the students provided an appropriate background for the presentation. Each audience
member was asked to do an act of service for another person on the official holiday, Monday, January 21st in his
memory. Thank you to all who attended, classes, administrators, teachers, families and friends. We hope you took
a little piece of his dream of peace and love home with you. Congratulations to the class for a job well done, Dr.
King would have been proud!
STEM AFTER SCHOOL @ BRICK
A TIME OF SHARING
Each month, the Lincoln Senior Center and our Brick
Elementary friends join together for a “time of sharing.” This
program begins in September and runs throughout the school
year. There are giggles, smiles, and special times that are
shared by all.
Over the past few months we have written letters to the Troops
and participated in a variety of craft programs including making
Christmas cards (that were sold at our fall rummage sale) and
paper snowmen. But our favorite activity so far was decorating
gingerbread houses with lots of candy goodies. The seniors
enjoyed this activity just as much as the students!
If you are interested in joining us, please contact our office
at (734) 483-8366 for the dates and times of our next
Intergenerational activity. We’d love to have you. Nothing is
greater than sharing yourself & making memories with children!
Students from Bishop, Brick, and Childs Elementary Schools came together for five
Tuesdays this fall to continue inquiry-based learning. The program is funded by the
Department of Defense through liaison officer Greg Chappelle, and was facilitated by
Principal David Northrop and taught by Tech Ed. teacher Carole Ryburg. The program
is showcased at The National Center for the Advancement of STEM Education [ http://
nacase.org/].
The fourth graders built bridges that spanned distances and held weight. They
examined tension and compression forces. The children also learned tool use
and safety. They used hand drills and junior hacksaws to attach dowel rods and
cubes, forming towers. Tagboard spanned the towers, forming the deck. Blocks and
matchbox cars were the weights used for testing the strength of their designs.
The other inquiry involved the catapult. This study explored gravity, height, distance,
velocity, and levers. The challenge was to design and build a device that can launch
a ping pong ball a distance. The children competed to see who could launch with the
greatest accuracy and distance.
LINCOLN THEATRE DEPARTMENT EARNS A
“ONE” RATING AT THEATRE COMPETITION
DISTRICTS.
On Saturday, January 26th, nineteen members of the Lincoln
High School Theatre Department competed in the District
Competition of the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics
Association’s Theatre Competition. The show was called
“Check Please: Take 2.” The plot: Guy and Girl break up
and then decide to date again. During the course of the play
they get one bad date after another. Some dates are merely
annoying, others are just ridiculous. Yet all are hilarious. To the
audience that is, because Guy and Girl are just frustrated by
these oddballs.
The competition results were a “One” rating (which is the highest score), awards for Laura Wynne, Senior
original music and a recreation of the fall of Troy under the Greek assault. This epic production will run from May
16th to 19th in the Lincoln Performing Arts Center.
BRICK ELEMENTARY AND BISHOP PEN PALS
BRICK ELEMENTARY - MY DAD’S VISIT
By: Gabe Fry
My dad, Michael Scott Fry, is a soldier in the United States Army. He has
been training for four months. He is a second Lieutenant.
The students in Mrs. Trotsky’s fifth grade class from Brick Elementary
and Mrs. Smith’s fourth and fifth grade multi-age class from Bishop
Elementary became pen pals in November. The children have been
writing letters back and forth getting to know their pen pals and learning to
become better writers. On January 10, 2013 Mrs. Trotsky’s Class hosted a
friendship meet and greet.
The children were introduced to their pen pals. While enjoying a cup of
friendship the children were able to talk and get to know their pen pals.
The students will continue to write letters to each otherand the classes will
be planning monthly get togethers.
LHS ALUM SPENDING SEMESTER IN MEXICO
Ava Myles, 2010 grad and UChicago scholar, is spending winter
semester in Oaxaha, Mexico where that high school Spanish
she took is coming in handy. Living in the home of a local
family, she attends classes at the Instituto Cultural Oaxaha,
a former 19th century estate house. She is visiting historical
sites in Oaxaha, a former Aztec stronghold and cultural center
of the region. An unofficial fieldtrip was spent in the mountains
with classmates at the petrified waterfalls Hierve el Agua. Her
travels also will include trips to the pyramids and Mexico City for
a week.
He came home November 8, 2012. I was so excited. I had not seen him
since April 2012. It was great to see my dad again. He brought me some
souvenirs. He came to Brick Elementary for Veteran’s Day to talk to my fifth
grade class (Mrs. Trotsky’s Class) and share some of his army equipment,
as well as share many of his experiences. My favorite thing that he shared
was his backpack and how heavy it was to carry because it was filled with
food, army equipment, sleeping mattress and rain gear. He told us all
about the qualities you need to be in the Army. You need to be loyal, brave,
disciplined, and have integrity. I am very proud of my dad! He is my hero.
NEW PLAYGROUND FOR MODEL’S YOUNGEST
STUDENTS
In November Model’s youngest learners celebrated the opening
of their new playground with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Over
the past few years Model’s Early Childhood Program has grown.
With that growth there was need for more playground space
suited for children between the ages of two and five. The large
climbing structure and fence were moved from their previous
location, which was much smaller. A Clubhouse Climber was
purchased using Box Tops and Campbell’s Soup labels. A swing
set and sensory panels were purchased with bond money.
A sandbox was purchased using fundraiser money. The new
playground provides students with more equipment to play on
and space to explore. It has brought joy to many!
LHS FEATURED ARTIST
The featured artist is Megan
Maroney. She is a 17 year-old
Senior. She has taken a well
rounded selection of art classes
here at school. Her classes include
Art I, Painting I and II, Metal, and
Drawing. Megan is interested
in fantasy art, but is open to
challenging and fun art endeavors.
Her favorite mediums to work in
are acrylic paint, watercolor, and
graphite. Megan is also an aspiring
tattoo artist. She is building her
experience in tattoo art by working
on adults over 18. She is also
taking online business courses
here at Lincoln to give her the skills
to run her own tattoo shop. Some
of her favorite artists include Kat
von D, Tommy Helm, and Oliver
Peck. Megan would like to know more about styles of tattooing like traditional, new school, and Japanese. She
also would like to have more experience with airbrushing and learning about graffiti-style fine art. Her work is
currently on display at the high school.
ART TEACHER FOR A DAY
Childs Elementary students Caroline Stone, Rylie Scharlach, and
Reghan Scharlach were able to be “Art Teacher for a Day.” This
opportunity was made available thanks to their amazing parents, who bid
on the “Art Teacher for A Day” item at the Childs Auction in November.
The girls got to spend the day teaching art with Mrs. Angel-- this was
a very memorable experience. The girls received their own art aprons,
had lunch, and stayed after school to create clay mugs for their family
members. Future art teachers….I think so!
KEITH HARING CEILING TILES AT BRICK
ELEMENTARY
Fifth Graders in Mrs. Angel’s art class studied the Pop Art
works of Keith Haring and created beautiful Haring-inspired
ceiling tiles for the school. The students had to collaborate
with other group members to decide on color choices and
designs. These amazing and colorful works of art are going
to be a permanent display throughout the hallways of Brick
Elementary.
DELIVERING CHRISTMAS CHEER
During the month of November & December a “Giving Tree”
resided in the Lincoln Senior center filled with a 100+ gift tags.
Seniors were asked to turn the tags into purchases of crafts,
toys, and books and then to place their wrapped items back
under the tree. Two weeks before Winter Break these items
were delivered to our Lincoln Elementary students.
Also during the month of December, another way the members
celebrated the “Holiday Spirit” was by adopting eight area
families and providing them with a “Christmas Meal.” Each
basket was complete with a turkey and all the fixings, canned
goods, and some extra goodies.
BUNDLE UP, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE!
It’s that time of the year again for the Lincoln Senior Center
Each year in November our members start collecting and
making hats & mittens for their annual cold weather drive
for our school district’s elementary students. The goal of this
program is to make sure that no child will go cold this winter.
To date, over 200 hats & mittens have been donated to this
program.
Deliveries have already been taken to Brick and Model
