GENERAL RULES OF WRESTLING<br />

The championship matches are six minutes long, divided into three periods of two minutes each.<br />

The first two-minute period wiii start from a standing, neutral position. Second and third periods<br />

shall begin in the starting position on the mat, contestants interchanging positions of advantage<br />

each period, determined by the flip of coin or disc. Consolation matches are five minutes in length<br />

(1-2-2).<br />

Overtimes - In Tournament competition when there is a tie in points at the end of the regular<br />

match, the wrestlers will wrestle three extra one-minute periods. There shall be a one-minute rest<br />

between the regular match and the first overtirie period only.<br />

A Fall is decided when either wrestler has held his opponent's shoulders to the mat for a period of<br />

two consecutive seconds. This terminates the match.<br />

A Decision is awarded to the contestant who scores the greater number of points in a match<br />

where no fall occurs.<br />

A Major Decision is defined as one where the winner's score exceeds the loser's by at least 8 and<br />

fewer than 12 points and superior decision as one where the winner's score exceeds the loser's by<br />

12 or more points.<br />

INDIVIDUAL SCORING<br />

1. A Takedown occurs when the opponent is brought to the njat under control. A takedown scores<br />

2 points.<br />

2. An Escape occurs when the defensive wrestler gains a neutral position and scores 1 point,<br />

3. A Reversal occurs when the defensive wrestler comes from underneath and goes behind his<br />

opponent, thus scoring 2 points.<br />

4. A Near Fall is a position in which the offensive wrestler has control of his opponent in a pinning<br />

situation and one of the following occurs: (1) When both shoulders of the defensive wrestler are<br />

held momentarily (stopped) within four inches of the mat or less, or (2) When one shoulder of the<br />

defensive wrestler is touching the mat, and the other shoulder is held at an angle of 45 degrees or<br />

less with the mat. Two points shall be awarded for such near fall situations. A continuous rollthrough<br />

is not to be considered a near fall. The criteria for a near fall having been met uninterrupted<br />

for five seconds, three points shall be awarded.<br />

5. Penalty points are also awarded for infraction of the rules, by scoring 1 point for first panalty, 1<br />

point for the second penalty and 2 points for the third penalty. A warning is not considered a<br />

penalty<br />
