“Shoot ‘Em Up”
Rated: R
One thing I often find with
action movies they combine a
mediocre plot with overdone
stunts, and therefore, instead of
getting my adrenaline pumping,
I find my self falling asleep.
This, however, is not the case
with “Shoot ‘Em Up”. I’m not
going to go into detail on the
paper-thin plot (as I was having
too much fun to really care), but
the basics are a man who we
know only by the name of Smith
(Clive Owen) delivers a baby
during a shootout and then
needs to protect it from the
thugs who want to kill it. These
thugs are led by the ruthless
Hertz (Paul Giamatti).
The stunts in this movie are
nothing short of brilliant, and
anything but overdone. After all,
how many other movies have a
man being killed with a carrot?
Hants East Rural High school will be
hosting a "Wake-a-thon" in support of the
"Spread the Net" foundation on Friday,
April 25th. The money raised from this
event will be going to help purchase insecticide
treated bed nets for Africa. Also, the
Grade 12 Leadership class is organizing a
dodge-ball tournament starting on the 21st, and a Read-a-thon (date to be announced).
The proceeds of these events will be donated
to help treat and prevent the spread
of malaria in Africa.
Here are some important facts to know
about this deadly disease:
•Malaria is caused by microscopic
parasites which are transmitted from
person to person by female anopheles
mosquitoes. When an infective
mosquito bites, she transmits malaria
parasites to her victim who falls
ill. Other mosquitoes then pick up
the parasite from the infected person
and continue spreading the disease
when biting other people.
It has been my experience that
most action movies get quite
dull towards the end, as the
overdone stunts end up getting a
five-minute montage. Again, this
is not the case with “Shoot ’Em
Up”, as the stunts are continually
new and interesting to
watch.
As much as I enjoyed the
stunts, the dialogue is amusing
and entertaining however, it is
quirky, it comes off as being
cheesy.
Movie Reviews
By Morgan Crane
In summary, this movie is
packed with new and different
stunts, entertaining dialogue, and
is just a blast to watch. If you
like action movies, this is probably
the most refreshing thing
you will see in quite some time.
HERH Bites Malaria Back!
By: Jan Isenor and Chantelle MacDougall
•About 40% of the world’s population,
mostly those living in the poorest
countries are at risk of malaria. Of
these 2.5 billion people at risk, more
than 500 million become severely ill
with malaria every year and more than
1 million die from the effects of the
disease.
•Malaria is especially a serious problem
in Africa, where one in every five
childhood deaths is due to the effects
of the disease.
•An African child has on average
between 1.6 and 5.4 episodes of
malaria fever each year.
•Every 30 seconds a child dies from
malaria.
•71% of all deaths from malaria are
in children under 5. A child's most
vulnerable period begins at six
months, when the mother's protective
immunity wears off and before
the infant has established its own
I have a criteria for a
good horror film. One, is it
scary ,and two, is it fun. Unfortunately,
“The Ruin”, like
most horror films these days,
failed to meet either one of
these expectations. But I’m
getting ahead of myself. First,
the summary. “The Ruins” is
a movie based on a book by
Scott Smith. It is about six
friends who go to some Mexican
ancient ruins. They find
more than old clay pots, however,
and their fun vacation
turns in to a fight for survival.
Like I said earlier, “The
Ruins” failed to meet my standards;
it failed to keep up the
tension that was so prominent
in the book and the acting was
sub par at best.
Because this movie is
based on a book, it had an-
other objective to meet, that
being that it follows the book
while being able to stand in
its own light. With Scott
Smith writing the screenplay,
this should have been easy
enough to accomplish, but
the movie cannot even do
this.
This is on the lower end
of modern day horror film,
and I’d rent it before I consider
buying it. After all, once
you see this, the amount you
paid for it may scare you
more than the movie.
immune system. Once infected a child's
condition may deteriorate quickly and
children can die within 48 hours after the
first symptoms appear.
• 300 to 500 million clinical cases of
malaria are documented each year
worldwide
•All malaria-endemic countries in Africa,
25-40% (average 30%) of all outpatient
clinic visits are for malaria (with most
diagnosis made clinically). In these same
countries, between 20% and 50% of all
hospital admissions are a consequence of
malaria.
• The Journalism 12 class would like to
extend a thank- you to Mr. Settle’s
Grade 12 Leadership class, along with
Beckey Head and friends for all of
their efforts to help stop this deadly
disease. Best of luck!
