“Hey,” Isaac laughed as he hung up,<br />
“don’t forget your broom!” It was a tradition<br />
for <strong>the</strong> skaters, on <strong>the</strong> first Saturday after <strong>the</strong><br />
dam closed, to sweep out <strong>the</strong> ditch.<br />
Isaac fell back on his pillow, his mind<br />

The next morning, Isaac boarded over<br />
to Sam’s house with his broom. Sam was<br />
still asleep, but his mom let him go down<br />
to his bedroom to get him up. Isaac smacked<br />
<strong>the</strong> bed with <strong>the</strong> broom, and Sam came<br />
awake, fast.<br />
“Hey, what <strong>the</strong> . . . ?”<br />
“Let’s go!”<br />
“Go? Oh, yeah, I forgot. We’ve got to<br />
sweep <strong>the</strong> ditch.”<br />
“And,” Isaac said, picking a miniature<br />
Snickers bar out of Sam’s Halloween bag on<br />
<strong>the</strong> floor, “we’re going to ride <strong>the</strong> <strong>Snake</strong>!”<br />
“No way!” Sam said, as he quickly rolled<br />
out of bed.<br />
“Jessie and I are going to do it. You<br />
want to?”
