CJ Beats Alter 13-6,
Breaks Alter’s 35
Game GCL
Win Streak
When the 3-6 Eagles prepared for their
annual rivalry game, not many gave them a chance
against the then 8-1 Alter Knights. The Eagles had
not defeated the Knights in regular season play in
10 years, and hadn’t beaten them in postseason
since 2004.
The Knights came in as heavy favorites
against an Eagles football team that had lost 5
games by seven points or less. Even a Dayton Daily
News writer wrote “Andy Helms and co. have suffered
many close losses this season, but this one
shouldn’t even be close.” You can never count out
the Eagles on any given Friday night.
The Eagles defeated the Knights in a defensive
game 13-6. Defensive Coordinator Marcus
Colvin’s game plan combined with great play from
There are several CJ graduates that have
excelled as student athletes at levels beyond high
school. Here are some updates on what some of
these graduates are doing.
Javon Ringer (Class of 2005) Football
Javon Ringer is known as one of the
best football players to come out of the Miami
Valley. After recording over 6,000 yards and 78
touchdowns while playing for CJ, Ringer was
primed to have success on the next level of
football after recovering from an ACL tear. Ringer
went on to excel at Michigan State, after graduating
from CJ, as one of the nation’s best running
backs in college football. He was then drafted to
the Tennessee Titans, where he backs up star Chris
Johnson.
Many believed being the backup to
one of the NFL’s best this season, Ringer would
have limited carries, or even close to none. Ringer
has once again proven his doubters wrong. On
Monday Night Football on October 18, Ringer
exploded on the Jacksonville Jaguars for ten carries
and a total of 42 yards. This game brought Ringer’s
totals on the season to 29 carries for 161yards
and a touchdown thus far. Ringer’s once thought
limited carries have been the complete opposite
and now many regard Ringer as an up and coming
back in the NFL and one of the best backups in
the league.
CJ student and fanatic senior Ricky Redinger
holds up his “I Believe” sign during the upset
win.
senior Justin Vaughn, junior Marco Gresham, and
sophomore Darrien Howard allowed the Eagles
to hold the Knights to the fewest points they have
scored in many seasons. The Eagles are also the first
team in over four years to play the Knights without
surrendering a touchdown.
“All I kept thinking during those last four
plays was that there is no better way to go out as
seniors and end our season than beating Alter,”
Tamika Williams-Raymond (Class of 1998)
Basketball
Tamika Raymond, Class of 1998 at CJ,
and former WNBA player was recently named
the head coach of the India Women’s Basketball
National Team. Through the WNBA’s agreement
to help promote international basketball, Raymond
accepted the job as head coach on October 21 and
will begin to prepare a young team for the Asain
Games on November 12.
Kurt Hess (Class of 2009) Football
Former starting quarterback at CJ, Kurt
Hess has recently been performing on a high level.
Hess won the starting quarterback job as a redshirt
freshman for the Youngstown State Penguins.
Hess impressed ESPN announcers by
putting up above average numbers on college
football powerhouse Penn State in the first start of
his career. Hess threw an 80-yard touchdown early
in the game and even had his team leading over
Penn State in the first quarter. Hess has continued
to impress by throwing 10 touchdowns, and only
4 interceptions; he also has added two rushing
touchdowns. Hess boasts a 63 % pass completion
rate on the season.
Emily Kauth (Class of 2008) Volleyball
Emily Kauth, CJ class of 2008, started
all 33 games for the Bowling Green Falcon Women’s
volleyball team last year. She also recorded 77
blocks and a .247 attack percentage. This season
ing those last four plays
was there is no better
way to go out as seniors,
and end our season,
than beating Alter”
- Senior Alex Breh
says senior Alex Breh. “This was something I’m not
gonna forget till the day I die. Every time I meet an
alum, the first question they’re gonna ask is did you
beat Alter? And we’re going to be able to say yes we
did.”
After junior starting quarterback Michael
Simpson went out with an injury early in the
game, having already thrown a touchdown to junior
Darian Reynolds, the Eagles’ chances looked slim.
However, Alter seemed to forget the Eagles had a
prepared and ready senior backup quarterback in
John Beurschen. Buerschen, along with the help
of his teammates and fellow seniors such as Tim
Szabo and Lee Hollis Jr. was able to end Alter’s 35
game GCL winning streak and put a sweet end to
the season for CJ.
percentage and a total of 20 blocks and 55
kills while rotating in the middle position. Kauth
has scored the sixth most points on the team as
Bowling Green continues to play in a tough MAC
volleyball conference.
Annie Haley (Class of 2009) Rowing
CJ alum Annie Haley, Class of 2009,
won the Division III NCAA championship for
Williams College as a freshman. Haley was in a
pair boat, and has already taken off to success in
her sophomore year.
Bethany Brun (Class of 2007) Rowing
While working toward her masters
degree in Women’s studies and theology at Mercyhurst,
the NCAA division II Eights National Championship.
and during her freshmen year she won Mercyhurst
