Michael L. Benjamin, M.P.H., CAE Executive Director Competitive Events STAR Events Postcards Postcards to national STAR Events participants have been mailed and they should be receiving them shortly. The postcard directs the participant to the FCCLA website to download information for national STAR Events. The direct link is http://www.fcclainc.org/content/2012-nlc-competitive-event-information/ please be sure all STAR Events participants review the information and it is recommended they print the event information and bring it with them to Orlando. The original information (names/addresses, etc.) submitted through the online STAR Events registration system, before state advisers submitted all changes to the national staff, will be reflected on these cards. Changes that have been received have been entered into the STAR Events database. A final informational report for your state or chapter may be requested by contacting starevents@fcclainc.org. Reminder: Changes to Onsite Event Registration – Packet Pickup In an effort to streamline registration, the following registration process will be implemented for the 2012 National Leadership Conference. States may continue implementing participant registration in ways that best meet their needs. During the 2012 National Leadership Conference, chapter advisers will be responsible for picking up all STAR Events registration materials and distributing it to their STAR Events participants. If the chapter adviser is not available during the specified time(s), they may request their packet be released to their state adviser or other designated adult. In order to receive the 5 points allocated to STAR Events Registration, chapter packets must be picked up during the specified registration time(s). During STAR Events Registration, the chapter adviser or designee will: • confirm participant attendance • receive participant information, which may include ribbons, participation times, specific event materials, and recognition session information • sign acknowledgment of receipt of materials. Any packets not picked up during the specified STAR Events Registration time(s) will be returned to the STAR Events Information Center. Chapter advisers may pick up these materials during normal STAR Events Information Center hours. Chapter packets not picked up during the specified STAR Events Registration time(s) will result in participants not receiving the 5 points for registration. Event Lead Consultants and Assistant Lead Consultants will receive notification of chapters/participants not receiving registration points and will enter a “0” in the registration section of the event Point Summary Form. Participants are still eligible to compete at their scheduled time. Marketing and Membership Coming soon to the FCCLA Adviser Blog!!! Beginning this summer, the FCCLA Adviser Blog will have a posting every Wednesday with new and up-to-date material regarding curriculum integration, FCCLA National Meetings, advocacy information, and chapter project ideas. Meetings and Conferences NATIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE DRESS CODE Approved by FCCLA’s Board of Directors, July, 2011 The National Leadership Conference is an excellent opportunity for members to convey to others the positive and professional image of FCCLA. Members’ behavior in the hotels and throughout the National Leadership Conference is the only image others in the hotel and host city may ever have of our organization. Student conduct and dress should contribute to the positive and professional image of FCCLA. The FCCLA official blazer is always appropriate and strongly encouraged. for enforcing the dress policy with their students. Delegates and guests not adhering to the dress policy will not be admitted into sessions. Thank you for your cooperation and support in putting forth a positive image of FCCLA throughout the National Leadership Conference! Career Explorations Career Explorations give FCCLA members and advisers the opportunity to expand their knowledge of careers and the workplace through tours and presentations by businesses in the locations of FCCLA national conferences. Career Explorations information and registration for the 2012 National Leadership Conference will be posted on the FCCLA national website early next week! TIRE | GENERAL SESSIONS Education and Leadership Development Alumni & Associates Volunteers We invite all FCCLA Alumni & Associates to who would like to help make the 2012 National Leadership Conference a fun, educational, and rewarding experience for attendees, to volunteer during the week. Our goal is to plug A&A volunteers into enjoyable opportunities so you can stay connected to the organization. If A&A are attending NLC with your chapter and they would like to play a bigger role of the conference, please have them complete this A&A Volunteer Survey so we can find options that will interest them. Programs & Youth & Adviser Training Lesson Plans and Activities Share your FCCLA lesson plans and activities with other advisers, and find lessons to use in your classroom. Please send lesson plans and activities (including attachments) to Bethany S. Kohut at bkohut@fcclainc.org. Share Our Strength at NLC Share Our Strength is excited to see everyone at NLC this year! We’ll be hosting two workshops on Wednesday, participating in the Adviser Activity Room and we’ll have a booth in the exhibit hall. The workshops are your chance to learn more about the issue of childhood hunger and how it affects kids in your state and all across the country. Advisers will get a chance to participate in curriculum activities that are available to teach your students about hunger in the classroom. We’ll also have tips for getting involved and some great prizes at our booth! See you there! Share Our Strength Website and Resources Share Our Strength and FCCLA have gotten a makeover! We are excited to rollout two new web pages. www.NoKidHungry2.org/fccla has ways to get involved and resources about childhood hunger for students and advisers. Chapters should visit this page often as they plan National Outreach activities. And www.NiKidHungry2.org/fcclaadvisers is a resources page just for advisers that includes hunger curriculum for your classroom. Both web pages are part of a new website designed to engage youth of all ages and their teachers and parents. Check out the entire site when you have a chance. Coming Soon! Share Our Strength is excited to announce a series of webinars this fall. Students and advisers will get the chance to dive deeper into the issue of childhood hunger and what needs to be done to end it. Stay tuned for dates and specific topics. March of Dimes Update March of Dimes looks forward to seeing you this summer to learn about your volunteer successes with the March of Dimes and share more information on how to get involved to improve the health of babies and make a difference in the lives of moms, babies and families. Stop by our booth, visit our workshops & we’ll see you in the Adviser Activity Room! Miscellaneous Best Buy Grant Opportunity Deadline: July 1 Through the Community Grants program, Best Buy teams across the United States select non-profit organizations that give teens access to opportunities through technology to help them excel in school and develop 21st century skills. This year, the Best Buy Children’s Foundation will give $2.8 million in Community Grants. Grant amounts will average $4000-$6000 and will not exceed $10,000. Page 3 of 4
