Hundreds of Filipinos, and
non-Filipinos too, who joined the
festivities were surrounded by the
sights, spirits and sounds of Filipino
culture and heritage. More than 40
tents, representing various
associations and businesses, were
used for the occasion.
"Filipinos are really fun-loving
people", said Evelyn Garcia, a
Plamondon resident. “They're still
talking of the recent Independence
Day celebrations' shows - the
performers from various ethnic groups
and most of all, the gun salutes by the
Royal Canadian Police. Now, we have
these beautiful and unique Pista sa
Nayon celebrations."
What is important about Pista
sa Nayon is that it certainly brought
Festival Chairman Monching Vicente with Hermana and Hermano Mayor. Filipino Star founder
back beautiful memories for many
Filipinos in Montreal and suburbs. One
of them is Budz Sarmiento, opinion
columnist of the North American
Filipino Star who just came back from
his home town of Mendez, Cavite.
“There are things that I
remember,” said Sarimento. “I
remember the dula (play) and the betobeto,
(form of gambling in the
Philippines in which the operator would
put a pair of dice in a small rack over
them with another saucer and shake
them). The players would choose a
number from two to sixteen and then
total the numbers on top of each dice
When the dice is uncovered, the one
who guessed the total would win.
People see the C-list actors and
actresses hired as entertainers. I also
remember the rat race, most of all, the
San Miguel beer and lechon that
Filipinos eat only on special occasions
like fiesta."
Flor Dimandan, owner of a
video store, hails from Navacar, Ilocos
Sur. “I also had fond memories of the
dula and the comedy skit,`said
Dumandan. “What I miss most is the
boat race in Navacar. Singing contests
are also popular in Navacar."
