ARTICLE 179<br />

Germany agrees, from the <strong>com</strong>ing into force <strong>of</strong> the present <strong>Treaty</strong>, not to accredit nor to<br />

send to any foreign country any military, naval or air mission, nor to allow any such<br />

mission to leave her territory, and Germany further agrees to take appropriate measures to<br />

prevent German nationals from leaving her territory to be<strong>com</strong>e enrolled in the Army,<br />

Navy or Air service <strong>of</strong> any foreign Power, or to be attached to such Army, Navy or Air<br />

service for the purpose <strong>of</strong> assisting in the military, naval or air training there<strong>of</strong>, or<br />

otherwise for the purpose <strong>of</strong> giving military, naval or air instruction in any foreign<br />

country.<br />

The Allied and Associated Powers agree, so far as they are concerned, from the <strong>com</strong>ing<br />

into force <strong>of</strong> the present <strong>Treaty</strong>, not to enroll in no r to attach to their armies or naval or air<br />

forces any German national for the purpose <strong>of</strong> assisting in the military training <strong>of</strong> such<br />

armies or naval or air forces, or otherwise to employ any such German national as<br />

military, naval or aeronautic instructor.<br />

The present provision does not, however, affect the right <strong>of</strong> France to recruit for the<br />

Foreign Legion in accordance with French military laws and regulations.<br />

SECTION II<br />

NAVAL CLAUSES<br />

ARTICLE 181<br />

After the expiration <strong>of</strong> a period <strong>of</strong> two months from the <strong>com</strong>ing into force <strong>of</strong> the present<br />

<strong>Treaty</strong> the German naval forces in <strong>com</strong>mission must not exceed:<br />

- 6 battleships <strong>of</strong> the Deutschland or Lothringen type, 6 light cruisers, 12 destroyers,<br />

12 torpedo boats,<br />

- or an equal number <strong>of</strong> ships constructed to replace them as provided in Article l90.<br />

No submarines are to be included.<br />

All other warships, except where there is provision to the contrary in the present <strong>Treaty</strong>,<br />

must be placed in reserve or devoted to <strong>com</strong>mercial purposes.<br />

ARTICLE 190<br />

Germany is forbidden to construct or acquire any warships other than those intended to<br />

replace the units in <strong>com</strong>mission provided for in Article l81 <strong>of</strong> the present <strong>Treaty</strong><br />

The warships intended for replacement purposes as above shall not exceed the following<br />

displacement:<br />

Armoured ships 10,000 tons<br />

Light cruisers 6,000 tons<br />

Destroyers 800 tons<br />

Torpedo boats 200 tons<br />

Except where a ship has been lost, units <strong>of</strong> the different classes shall only be replaced at<br />

the end <strong>of</strong> a period <strong>of</strong> twenty years in the case <strong>of</strong> battleships and cruisers, and fifteen<br />

years in the case <strong>of</strong> destroyers and torpedo boats, counting from the launching <strong>of</strong> the ship.
