What Can We Do?<br />
• Turn <strong>of</strong>f faucets when not us<strong>in</strong>g water (brush<strong>in</strong>g teeth, soap<strong>in</strong>g up when we wash our hands<br />
or take a shower, while wash<strong>in</strong>g anyth<strong>in</strong>g). Allow<strong>in</strong>g water to run <strong>for</strong> one m<strong>in</strong>ute represents<br />
a loss <strong>of</strong> 2 to 5 liters.<br />
• Take a shower more frequently than a bath.<br />
• Repair leaks and breaks as rapidly as possible (one faucet or toilet that drips can waste up<br />
to 5000 liters <strong>of</strong> water a year.<br />
• Install storage tanks and low-use faucets.<br />
• Fill <strong>the</strong> washer with clo<strong>the</strong>s, economize on water (no half-loads)<br />
• If you have a garden, practice xeroscap<strong>in</strong>g (drought tolerant landscap<strong>in</strong>g). Design <strong>the</strong> garden<br />
<strong>for</strong> low water use.<br />
• Do not throw waste <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> toilet: oil, cigarette butts, etc. Cigarette butts should be thrown<br />
<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> trash and petroleum products (like pa<strong>in</strong>ts and varnishes) should be placed <strong>in</strong> a<br />
bottle or jar and taken to recycl<strong>in</strong>g centers. 2<br />
• Avoid throw<strong>in</strong>g contam<strong>in</strong>ants or toxic substances <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>k: detergents, soaps, oils. In<br />
spite <strong>of</strong> purifiers, <strong>the</strong>y still leach <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> rivers. Some clean<strong>in</strong>g products contam<strong>in</strong>ate less<br />
than o<strong>the</strong>rs. Use <strong>the</strong>m accord<strong>in</strong>gly.<br />
• Reduce consumption <strong>of</strong> detergent and s<strong>of</strong>tener <strong>in</strong> wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es. (Manufacturers usually<br />
recommend larger amounts than are really needed.)<br />
• Buy appliances that are energy and water efficient.<br />

• How can we improve our communal use <strong>of</strong> water?<br />
• Decide what to do and evaluate <strong>the</strong> decision <strong>in</strong> six months by read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> water<br />
meter and look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> water bill: how much water and how much money have<br />
been saved?<br />

also <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> variety <strong>of</strong> ecosystems and <strong>the</strong> genetic differences with<strong>in</strong> each species which allow <strong>the</strong><br />
comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> multiple <strong>life</strong> <strong>for</strong>ms. Their mutual <strong>in</strong>teraction with <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment serves as <strong>the</strong><br />
foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>life</strong> on <strong>the</strong> planet.<br />
2 At certa<strong>in</strong> recycl<strong>in</strong>g centers residual substances are accepted free <strong>of</strong> charge. These substances should<br />
not be placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> regular trash, nor should <strong>the</strong>y be thrown <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>k or toilet, ei<strong>the</strong>r because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir large<br />
volume or because <strong>the</strong>y are dangerous. Check with your local recycl<strong>in</strong>g center <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> substances that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y will accept.<br />
