Dr. Newton Gordon has a way
of doing the right thing…and doing things
right. During his 31 years on the faculty
at UCSF, he has been a doer and a giver.
Gordon is a member of the Dean’s Associates
and has supported a variety of programs and
campaigns, including the School of Dentistry
Annual Fund, the Clinics Modernization
Campaign, the William W. Ware Endowed
Lectureship and the John C. Greene
Endowed Chair.
Currently, Gordon is president of the
Dental Board of California, whose mission is
to protect California consumers through
the enforcement of licensing standards.
Gordon is credited with helping change the
Board of Dental Examiners test to eliminate
race and sex bias.

the money I give goes to improve
the learning environment of the
students,” Gordon said. “The
profession of dentistry has done
so much for me, and this is just a
small way that I can give back.
With costs rising at unprecedented
rates and the state cutting
support for education, it is now
more important than ever to
support the School of Dentistry.
The majority of students and
trainees in public institutions
must accept higher education
as a privilege and not a right.
Such an acceptance should
presage alumni participation
and, foremost, volunteerism and
financial contribution to their
respective institution.”
