in 1913 in <strong>the</strong> journal Arkadia, <strong>the</strong>n in 1916 as a separate volume in Kurt<br />

Wolff’s series Der jüngste Tag.<br />

“Die Verwandlung” (The Metamorphosis), written fall 1912, published<br />

1915 in <strong>the</strong> journal Die weißen Blätter.<br />

“In der Strafkolonie” (In <strong>the</strong> Penal Colony), written fall 1914, published<br />

1919.<br />

Ein Landarzt (A Country Doc<strong>to</strong>r), a collection <strong>of</strong> short s<strong>to</strong>ries written<br />

in 1916–17, published 1919. Includes <strong>the</strong> following texts discussed in <strong>the</strong><br />

present volume: “Auf der Galerie” (Up in <strong>the</strong> Gallery), “Vor dem Gesetz”<br />

(Before <strong>the</strong> Law), “Schakale und Araber” (Jackals and Arabs), “Die Sorge<br />

des Hausvaters” (The Cares <strong>of</strong> a Family Man), and “Ein Bericht für eine<br />

Akademie” (A Report <strong>to</strong> an Academy), as well as <strong>the</strong> title s<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

Ein Hungerkünstler (A Hunger Artist), a collection pro<strong>of</strong>read by<br />

<strong>Kafka</strong> and published posthumously in 1924. Includes “Erstes Leid” (First<br />

Sorrow) and “Ein Hungerkünstler” (1922), “Eine kleine Frau” (A Little<br />

Woman, 1923), and “Josefine, die Sängerin oder Das Volk der Mäuse”<br />

(Josephine <strong>the</strong> Singer, or <strong>the</strong> Mouse Folk, 1924).<br />

The most interesting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> uncollected texts are “Die Aeroplane in<br />

Brescia” (The Airplanes in Brescia, 1909), about <strong>the</strong> visit <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kafka</strong> and<br />

Brod <strong>to</strong> an air-show; and “Der Kübelreiter” (The Bucket Rider, 1917),<br />

a wild vision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wartime coal shortage.<br />

Volume Two: Der Verschollene (The Missing Person, written 1911–13),<br />

includes six numbered chapters, two lengthy additional texts, and three<br />

fragments.<br />

Volume Three: Der Proceß, written 1914–15, includes ten “canonical”<br />

chapters and six fragments.<br />

Volume Four: Das Schloß, written 1922–23, includes twenty-five chapters,<br />

many clearly incomplete.<br />

Volume Five: Beschreibung eines Kampfes und andere Schriften aus dem<br />

Nachlaß (Description <strong>of</strong> a Struggle and O<strong>the</strong>r Writings from <strong>the</strong> Literary<br />

Remains).<br />

This and <strong>the</strong> following three volumes mark <strong>the</strong> decisive step forward<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Critical Edition: all <strong>Kafka</strong>’s unpublished fictions are included, in
