WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW<br />
Small and midsize businesses (<strong>SMB</strong>s) have very different network security requirements from<br />
large enterprises. <strong>Multifunction</strong> firewalls aren't suitable <strong>for</strong> large enterprises, and <strong>SMB</strong>s don't<br />
usually require several best-of-breed network security appliances. The <strong>SMB</strong> multifunction firewall<br />
market is large, fragmented, and highly dynamic, with vendors providing a common set of core<br />
security features, differentiating with new added safeguards, ease of installation, and use, and<br />
addressing the realities of the <strong>SMB</strong> IT environment.<br />

Market Overview<br />
For the purpose of this research, Gartner defines <strong>SMB</strong> organizations based on the number of<br />
employees — that is, fewer than 1,000.<br />
The clear and defining characteristic of <strong>SMB</strong>s is a relative constraint in resource availability<br />
compared with larger peers, including:<br />
