34 Glebe Report March 14, 2008 SCHOOLS
Glebe's musicians head to a gig in Chicago
BY S. MASSEY AND K. LISTON
As we head into March break, the
students and staff at Glebe Collegiate
Institute are looking forward to
a well deserved break. The last few
months have been extremely busy
and the building has been bustling
with activity. Not a day goes by
without great things happening at
our school.
In February, Glebe paid tribute to
Black History month with two backto-back
assemblies. Key student
organizers, Craig Matasva and
Kendal Brouet, introduced the program
with a unifying thread of freedom.
Through a musical history prepared
and performed by Hayley
Max-Lino, monologues by 'Harriet
Tubman' and 'Rosa Parks,' a meeting
with 'Abraham Lincoln' and
'John F. Kennedy,' a debate between
'Malcolm X' and 'Martin Luther
King,' and a performance by Glebe's
own Luigi Fidelia, students were
educated, enlightened and entertained.
Thank you to all who planned
and performed", with special thanks
to Glebe's stage crew, who went
above and beyond the normal call to
make this year's assemblies a huge
success.
Turning to sports, our girls volleyball
team is enjoying great success.
In defeating Beatrice
Desloges three games to two, our
girls won a fifth consecutive
NCSSAA `AAAA' championship.
The team will next compete at
OFSAA when they vie for a provincial
championship. Keep in mind
that our boys team won this honour
back in the fall. In past games,
Emily Kyte was unstoppable,
Becky Billings was awesome and
Alex Bateman made great mental
choices at the net. Other key players
included Emma Landry, Cynthia
Bowles, Emilie Halle, Maddie
Martin, Stephanie Marrocco and
Nathalie Chou. An honourable
mention for our most improved
player this year, Alex Massey. Special
thanks go to Wes Chen, Rex
Fenton and Mr. Dillabaugh for their
excellent coaching.
On another note, Glebe's music
department is gearing up for several
events this semester. They travel to
Chicago in April to participate in the
Chicago Music Festival. Three of
our eight ensembles will be performing,
namely the choir, junior/intermediate
band and Offbeat.
Our students will be selling chocolate
bars to help offset the cost of
their trip. In early May, our stomplike
percussion group, Offbeat, will
be touring local schools treating
audiences to an outstanding show.
Our students have also started
preparing for the spring music night.
Senior students have been elected to
the positions of stage manager, secretary,
PR, advertising, corporate
funding, playbill, refreshments and
technical support. Our theme this
year is "Heroes and Villains." Once
again we will be projecting clips and
stills on a huge video screen located
above the band. Concert night is
scheduled for Thurs., May 29 at
7:30 p.m. in Glebe's Auditorium.
Tickets will be sold in advance, and
they sell out fast, so keep your eyes
and ears open for announcements
and flyers.
Did you know that in the past fifty
years three times the number of people
killed in all the wars of the twentieth
century have died from hunger
and poor sanitation? Upon hearing
this fact, a group of 60 students from
Glebe Collegiate are now hungry for
change. Consequently, these students
will be collecting pledges and
fasting for 30 hours on April 4 and 5
in an effort to raise money for World
Vision. Each Friday until the 30-
hour famine, students will be able to
try different foods from various
developing countries. The proceeds
from these sales will be used to fund
activities during the famine and the
remainder will go to World Vision.
As a member of the organizing
committee for the famine, Glebe's
very own Katherine Liston attended
a youth empowered program held at
the Embassy West Hotel. The event
featured workshops about children
in conflict, girls in poverty,
HIV/A1DS in the developing world
and the development of third world
countries. Students from across
Ottawa heard from Fatmire Feka, an
eighteen year-old Nobel Peace Prize
nominee from Kosovo. At just
twelve years old, Fatmire founded
the organization Kids for Peace. On
her way home Katherine reflected,
"After hearing about the 29,000 children
who died of malnutrition while
I was attending the youth empowered
pnigram, I wasn't about to complain
about my dinner!"
Finally, mark your calendars for
the annual OCDSB EarthCARE
Expo, Thurs., May 8, 2008 from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. at Confederation Education
Centre, 1645 Woodroffe
Avenue. At the event, Glebe students
will be focused on keynote speaker
Simon Jackson, founder and chairman
of Spirit Bear Youth Cbalition,
one of the world's largest youth-run
environmental organizations. He
states, "One person, no matter their
age, no matter where they live, can
make a difference for all life."
Sounds like a great motto, and one
that many of our students embrace.
