2011 – 2012 Annual Report
The medical forensic exams are performed by one of eight Sexual Assault Nurse
Examiners on staff. Six of the nurses are IAFN SANE-A board certified, one is boardeligible
and one will be eligible in the fall of 2013. One SANE is IAFN SANE-P board
certified, three others are SANE-P eligible. The SANE program provides 24-hour coverage,
which amounts to 6,760 hours of on-call coverage, which includes the 2,000 hours of
coverage by the SANE Program Coordinator.
The Children’s Advocacy Center Program
The Children’s Advocacy Center provides a coordinated, collaborative approach to
addressing child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse in our community. A multidisciplinary
team works together to help minimize the trauma victims may experience
by providing coordinated investigative team interviews, advocacy services, follow up
contacts, referrals and information, therapy, and monthly case review meetings.
Sexual Assault Services dedicates three of its staff members to the Child Advocacy Center
and several SAS therapists alternate to serve as part of the multi-disciplinary team during
interviews and for case review. Staff members who are specially trained advocates serve
in the lobby area while the interview is taking place.
During this reporting period, 174 children and four adults with cognitive disabilities
received specialized forensic interviews and 255 family members received support and
information. There were 67 male children and 111 female children interviewed during
this period. Seventy children were six years and under, 69 children were between the
ages of seven to twelve years old, and 30 children were 13 to 18 years old. Our new
Marshall CAC site in the Crossroads Church and Ministries building opened February 14,
2012. From February 14, 2012 to September 30, 2012 we served 22 children at that site.
The Department of Justice statistics reveal that over 90% of child sexual abuse offenders
are known and trusted by the child or their family. Our CAC statistics are comparable
with those of the Department of Justice in that 95% of the offenders in the cases processed
at the CAC were known and trusted by the children and/or their family members.
