Page 6, GLEBE REPORT, July 8, 1973 Community Centre Notes COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND: PHASE TWO The Glebe Community Playground is to be added to on July 14 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in a joint effort between the Glebe Parents' Day Care Centre and the Glebe Community Centre Council. Volunteers are urgently needed to help build a playhouse, to frame in the sand area with wooden beams, to build a plank joining the tree house and the deck, to improve the slide, and to build a partitioned-off area for very young children. Phase one of the playground was built by volunteers during the Opening Day on June 2. - The resulting tree house and deck have proved to be a popular play place for children of all ages. Come and bring shovels and carpenty. Two significant issues were uncovered: the first was that it appeared that the regional traffic engineers were quietly, and without any sanction from the Council, assembling land for an arterial running eastwest from Britannia, along Scott street, Somerset, Donald to St. Laurent, and from there along Blair Road to the east. The second point was that this was generally being supported by the suburban and rural representatives. The original issue that raised all this was whether regional council should expropriate a small parcel of land which, iff allowed to be developed, would effectively block a bridge across the canal at Somerset St. By the time the final vote was taken this was virtually forgotten; the issue was by then the right of Ottawa to decide on where and if arterial roads should be located within its boundaries. It would be satisfying to report that Mayor Benoit's speech, or the action of more than 34 community groups who opposed the expropriation, carried the vote. In fact, after four hours of spirited debate most subtuban and rural representatives had left. The motion for expropriation was defeated by 13 to 9. We are left with a mystery. Did the subruban and rural people leave as a face-saving device because of the extremely strong city and citizen reaction to their position, or was it to get home before dark ? A POTENTIAL HOME REPAIR SERVICE: The federal government is attempting to encourage senior citizens to get actively involved in their communities through the New Horizons programme. Grants of money are given to a group of at least 10 senior citizens who put forward an idea for a project that would be of benefit to themselves and to others. Mr. D. Sharp is an 82-year old resident of the Glebe who has an excellent idea for such a New Horizons project. He is a retired plumber and is looking for other retired persons who have skills in carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical work, and other related fields. He feels such people could get together to put their skills to work to help other senior citizens repair their homes. He is very anxious to get the project going. Anyone interested in working with him, or who could use the services the group could offer is asked to call Mr. Sharp at 236- 4079 or leave a message at the Glebe Information Centre: 233- 3300. GARDENS GROWING WELL Anyone who has passed by the Second Avenue and Lyon Street side of the community centre will see that the flowers in the little garden plots are doing well. Every Wednesday morning they are carefully tended by Miss 'M Mihie, Mrs. R. Mallory, Mrs. A Pratt, Mrs. R. Younger, Miss E. Price and Mr. G. Charlevoix. After the weeding and watering the gardeners have coffee and cookies. If you are walking by, stop and enjoy the flowers. Finger painting Here's something for long summer days. Below we've printed some recipes for finger paint and hints on how to do it. When you've finished your pictures, send us one (or all if you lilce) and we'll print some in the next issue. Hints to mothers - finger painting needn't be too messy - try it in the bathroom, or on the back or front porch. SUPPLIES Finger paint (see recipe below) Glossy or glazed paper Sponge Iron Plastic spray or shellac Water must be available in a sink or large container to soak the paper. PROCEDURE 1. Soak the paper in water in any of the following ways, making sure both sides are thoroughly wet. put the paper under the tap in the sink, or roll the paper into a tube and submerge it in a container of water, or spread the paper al a table and soak it with sponge and water. The paper adheres more firmly to a surface if wet on both sides. 2. Place the paper on a smooth flat surface. Do not place it Things to do too close to the edge of the table top as the paint might drip over.. Make sure the glossy side of the paper is up and all air bubbles and wrinkles are smoother out. Satisfactory finger paintings cannot be made on an uneven or unsteady surface. Place about one tablespoon of finger paint on the wet surface - if powdered finger paint is used sprinkle it lightly over the entire surface of the paper - more can be applied later if necessary. Paint applied too heavily will crack or chip off when dry. Spread the paint evenly over the entire surface of the paper with the palm of the hand or forearm to create the background of the finger painting. Varied movements of the hands and forearms in different positions will create interesting effects. The side of the hand when held rigid and pulled over th the paper makes long and delicate leaves. The same hand position moved in a zig-zag motion creates an altogether different effect. Experiment with a variety of hand and arm movements and positions. An infinite number of effects are possible by using the closed fist, bent fingers, open palm, heel of the hand, wrist etc. Other various effects are also possible if a comb, small notched piece of cardboard etc. are used. Areas of colour can also be cleaned away with a sponge. July 8, 1973, GLEBE REPORT, Page 7 New beginnings can be made until the paper loses its gloss. Sprinkle a few drops of water on the paper if the paint becomes too sticky, to allow the hand or arms to slide easily over the paper. Spread newspaper on the floor in a little used area. Lift the finger painting by two corners and spread it on the newspaper. Allow the painting to dry. Press onnthe unpainted side with a hot iron. Spray with shellac or plastic spray. Recipe for finger paint: 1 cup liquid starch 6 cups water cup soap chips Dissolve the soap chips in water until no lumps remain, then mix well with starch and remaining water. Mix wheat paste (wallpaer paste) into cold or lukewarm water. Stir until smooth. Pour', into containers, one for each color, and stir in colour pigment. or: Small pieces of coloured chalk ground fine and added to paste of a smooth consistency makes an inexpensive finger paint. Paste: 2 qts. boiling water 12 tbsp. starch dissolved in cold water first. Mix, stir until thick, and pour into separate containers. Add the ground chalk and a few drops of oil of clove to prevent smell. Keep in cool place.
