GREECE/TURKEY TENTATIVE ITINERARY<br />

Day 1- Arrival in Athens.<br />

GREEK ISLANDS<br />

Day 2 - Embark on ferry to Mykonos. Tour of Mykonos Town. Free time.<br />

Day 3 - Boat to Delos islet. Tour of Delos, with its important Greek archaeological sites, and<br />

return to Mykonos by boat. Free time.<br />

Day 4 - Ferry to Samos Island. Free time. This island is important back to classical Greece and<br />

the birthplace of notable Greeks Pythagoras, Epicurus, and Aristarchus.<br />

Day 5 - Tour of Samos. Boat to Kusadasi, a seaside town on the Turkish Aegean coast.<br />

Day 6 – Tour of Ephesus, a ruined city of great importance in Greek and Roman times. The<br />

Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World stood here; it was<br />

also the site of one of the Apostle Paul’s most important missionary destinations.<br />

TURKEY<br />

Day 7 – Leave Kusadasi <strong>for</strong> Canakkale, the nearest town to the ancient city of Troy.<br />

Day 8 – Depart Canakkale <strong>for</strong> Istanbul. Stops at Gallipoli, the site of the most important World<br />

War I battlefield in the region.<br />

Days 9-10 – Istanbul. Visits to the Topkapi Palace, home of the Ottoman emperors, the Grand<br />

Bazaar, one of the largest covered markets in the world, and the Hagia Sophia, the<br />

remarkable Christian church from the Byzantine age.<br />

BULGARIA<br />

Day 11 – Travel to Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the oldest continually inhabited city in Europe. Churches,<br />

mosques, and Roman amphitheater are in a compact old city. Free time.<br />

Day 12 – Depart Plovdiv. Stop in Asenovgrad, site of Asen’s Fortress, and Bachkovo monastery<br />

on the drive to Greece.<br />

GREECE<br />

Day 13 – Travel to Thessaloniki, Greece.<br />

Day 14 – Tour of Thessaloniki, with over a dozen museums representing the varied and rich<br />

cultural history of the area. Free time.<br />

Day 15 - Travel to Kalambaka with stop at Vergina, a small Greek town with an important<br />

archaeological museum.<br />

Day 16 – Travel to Delphi, stopping en route to visit the spectacular rock towers and monastery<br />

Meteora. An additional stop at Thermopylae, site of the ancient Greek battle against the<br />

Persians, led by the 300 Spartans.<br />

Day 17 – Tour of Delphi site and museum, famous <strong>for</strong> its oracle and being the center of the<br />

Greek worship of Apollo. Travel to Athens.<br />

Day 18 – Sightseeing tour of Athens, including Acropolis and the Temple of Poseidon.<br />

Day 19 – Tour of Argolis region including Mycenae and Corinth, with its famous canal.<br />

Day 20 – Saronic Gulf cruise, with stops on the three small islands of Hydra, Poros, and Aegina.<br />

Day 21 – Depart <strong>for</strong> Portland<br />
