Creating A Love Of Reading - National Adult Literacy Database

People come to a literacy program because they have a personal or professional goal, and
they understand that learning to read will enable them to achieve it. As educators, our
role is to help the student reach that goal. So, the meaning of literacy has a lot to do with
achievement -- students achieving their personal or professional goals, however modest
or grand they may be.
Today in Canada, there are more literacy programs in place, or being planned, than ever
before. This is not surprising given our country's long and distinguished tradition in nonformal,
adult education and literacy programs. The Antigonish Movement, the
Cooperative Movement, the Women's Institute, the Farm Forum, YMCA and YWCA
programs, the Worker's Educational Association, and Frontier College are some of the
organizations that have led the way in creating and implementing learning and literacy
programs over several decades.
