PRESIDENT CARTER 

I was so pleased to read your editorial 

,- concerning President Jimmy. Carter. I 

shall never forget hearing him give his 

Christian testimony when I attended a 

.prayer breakfast in Atlanta, Ga. when 

he was governor of Georgia; There is no 

doubt that the commitment that President, 

Carter had to his Lord and to his church 

while he 'was President of the United 

States had a profound positive influence 

for the Christian witness throughout our 

country. Just ] a |few weeks ago I flew to 

Baltimore, Md. jarea to make plans for a 

youth "choir mission trip. An associational 

missionary told |'me that the coming of 

Jimmy Carter to the White House literally 

put Southern {Baptist work on the map. 

I have been disturbed in recent months 

to t£ad critical remarks about Mr. Carter 

from fellow Baptists, it is one thing to 

differ from him on political issues such 

as the ERA Amendment and the Panama 

Canal issue; it is quite another matter to 

try to make tfjese political issues cross 

over into the religious realm. We should 

be thankful as Baptists that a man of our 

faith not bnly attended church regularly 

but even took I time to teach a Sunday 

school class. May his tribe .increase!—

You know that he is a complete hypocrite, 

one whom Jesus called "whitewashed 

sepulchres," nice looking on the 

outside but full of corruption. v 

Since you know these facts, your article" 

is as hypocritical as Carter is. Let's 

have.no more hypocrisy in your writings.

SUPER CHURCHES 

- It appears that we don't have to wonder 

any longer about the "Fox" referred 

to in your March 25 editorial, and his 

position on liquor by the drink. That was 

good! j 

Also on the same editorial page you 

mentioned "Super Churches" which is a 

subject very near to my heart. 

The thing that bothers me is that I 

read words like yours and others, conventionwide, 

which recognize th$ "greatness" 

of the 22,000 |(61 percent) churches with

than 300 members but few, if any, 

of the pastors of these great "super 

churches" ever make it to the pulpit to 

preach at any of our state or SBC meetings. 

We need to hear, from these men and 

not just the Bailey Smiths, Charles Stanleys, 

John Bisagnos and W. A. Criswells 

if our editorials and other writings have 

any depth and legtimacy. 

I for one, would like to see them do 

more than read Scripture and pray at our 

state and SBC meetings. I wonder if we

ERA 

Thanks for your good paper and the 

opportunity to share our views. 

The speaker of the House of Representatives 

said that he had decided to. 

bring the ERA up to vote again just before 

the session closes. He was convinced 

the people of Oklahoma wanted it after 

all. The militant ERA workers are spending 

thousands of dollars. They are using 

it to make converts and get them to bombard 

their representatives and speaker 

with letters, cards and phone calls. 

I am afraid the opponents are just going 

their merry way. There are enough 

wise people who read the Baptist Messenger 

to win .if they would only wake up 

and write, phone and visit their representative. 

Paul of the. New Testament was 

not afraid to fight the good battle of truth 

and contact the rulers of that day.—

increased tuition aid grants. 

Your inconsistency amazes me. On the 

one hand you criticize tuition tax credits 

for private schools, but on the other you 

advocate student grants to attend public '

ready for this counseling session, Mrs. 

Smith." 

and private colleges. On one hand you 

are critical of Jerry Falwell's interjecting 

religion into politics (even though he represents 

only one local Baptist church) 

while you use your position as a paid 

staffer of the Baptist General Convention 

to push your-political view on tuition 

aid grants and other issues as well. . 

You have every.right as a private citizen 

to take conservative or liberal positions 

(I notice you seem to be rather 

liberal) on public issues, but I resent the 

implication that your view is the Christian 

position on a public political issue."'

do with being for or against tuition aid

BILL MOYERS 

I am deeply concerned over the movement 

away from articles of real spiritual 

significance by the Baptist Messenger. 

A prime example is the article on Bill 

Movers, I have nothing against him. My 

concern is why such an article appears in 

a publication financed by Cooperative 

Program dollars. It doesn't glorify God, 

strengthen believers or address an issue. 

For one who only a few months ago was 

concerned over the space occupied by 

church attendance reports, there seemed 

to be no reluctance to expend a full pagel 

on a man who, by his own admission, has! 

had a normal religious experience, but 

doesn't know what that is; a man who 

arrived where he is by believing in something, 

whatever it was. Countless millions 

-have followed this same example. What 

ever happened to prayer and the direction 

of the Holy Spirit? 

If he has not moved beyond his Baptist 

origins, why is he a member of the 

Church of Christ? Are we to believe both 

are New Testament churches? No mention 

is made of Jesus in the article, only 

a jesting reference to the Lord. Certainly 

there is news of more interest to Oklahoma 

Baptists. I, for one, would like to 

have heard more about the revival in 

Modesto, Calif, or the revival at Norman, 

Trinity where there were 116 additions : 

by baptism in five days. Surely an interview 

with Bailey Smith, the evangelist, 

or pastor, Bill Elliff, would be of great 

interest. - . . 

I will continue to read the Baptist 

Messenger, and hope it moves back to 

the standard of excellent Christian journalism

Family: The Foundation of Society 

Family is the basic unit of our society. As soon as God 

created man, he saw the need for a helpmeet to make him 

complete. Thus at the beginning ofMiuman history God established 

a family. 

There are various definitions of family today. Most of 

us consider an ideal family to consist of a husband and wife 

with their offspring living together in the same household. 

The growth in number of single parent families is altering the 

definition of family, sometimes drastically. Working mothers 

make up a growing segment of the population further complicating 

the definition. This decade individuals living alone 

could become the fastest growing population category. 

While some sociologists define families as one or more 

persons living together in the same household, that hardly 

measures up to-the biblical model of the family. At one time 

the family included parents, children and grandparents living 

and working together. Today.few families have taken responsibility 

for grandparents f within the home and retirement 

centers and rest homes have taken the place of family for 

the elderly. Easy divorce has divided family units in. record 

numbers. Currently almost one-third of U.S. marriages will 

end in divorce leaving millions of children to be reared by a 

single parent, usually the mother. . 

The family should be a warm, nurturing atmosphere in 

which all members can experience love/and the freedom to 

grow into the persons God intends for them to be. Unfortunately 

many families fail to provide that kind of atmosphe're. 

Many families are battlegrounds. The members spend much 

of their time fighting among themselves over such things as

"God may be getting ready to do something." That is the 

conclusion evangelist Jack Stanton draws from the many reports 

of unusually large numbers of professions of faith in 

revivals this spring. 

The column written this week by Oklahoma Director of 

Evangelism .Jerry Don Abernathy mentions several such revivals 

in our state. Evangelist Freddie Gage, who was the 

preacher in two of the meetings, said, "Never have I witnessed 

a greater moving of the Holy Spirit." He suggests that there 

may be-a spiritualâwakening all over the country. He very 

well could be correct. 

' .- ! . 

I believe history demonstrates that there are cycles in 

evangelism. We may be entering a cycle of heightened concern 

for lost people and a greater emphasis on reaching them 

with the gospel. Several factors seem to indicate this may 

be so. . - . ' • - . " 

The 8.5 by 85 Sunday school enlistment program-being 

launched this year has put a renewed emphasis on the: primary 

outreach organization in Baptist churches. As we; become 

more aware of the need for Sunday school growth there will 

be a larger number of qualified evangelism prospects in regular 

contact with our churches. These are the people who can 

be reached most easily. ^ 

There is a growing emphasis on personal evangelism. It 

seems to me that more and more churches are enlisting and 

table manners, money, school, church, political issues and 

personal ego problems. Some families are refrigerators and 

members freeze each other out by refusing to communicate 

about even the most trivial matters. Such families fall far 

short of the biblical ideal. ; 

Love is the foundation on which the Christian family 

must be built. Love causes each family member to consider 

the wishes and well being of others to be more important 

than his own. It does not demand that each person become a 

carbon copy of every other person in the family. It allows 

openness so that members can express themselves in a nonthreatening 

atmosphere, and learn and grow together. 

Churches must learn to minister to families without contributing 

to their fragmentation. Social and peer pressures 

pull families in many directions, and the church must find a 

way to draw families together and. help them become the 

warm, loving, growing institutions God intended for them 

to be. 

It is possible to magnify the ideal family in such a way 

that people feel guilty, for their failures and cease striving to 

build sound family structures.. We can set rules for family 

behavior and discipline that drive family members apart. We 

can fill the church calendar so full of worthy meetings and 

projects that families have no time to live and work together 

at the job of being family. When these happen we are in 

danger of weakening rather than strengthening the family. 

Christian Home Week is designed to magnify* and encourage 

the Christian family. Let's use it to help our families discover 

ways to open avenues of communication and build 

bridges of understanding between their members, to encourage 

establishment of family altars and to identify ways to diminish 

conflicts.—RTM . : 

training individuals for personal witnessing efforts. Materials 

currently available for witness training stress the importance 

of learning by doing, and training is more effective. The new 

Continuing Witness Training program developed by the Home; 

Mission Board Evangelism Division looks like one of the 

most practical and usable programs available -anywhere. Its 

use could have a major impact on evangelism results in the 

coming years. - 

Churches also are using the-revival more effectively-as a 

harvest tool. Not much that is out of the ordinary was tried 

by the churches reporting unusual results this spring. They 

featured stirring revival music, some used testimonies of well 

known personalities and fervent evangelistic preaching. Butg 

all these have been used before. The difference has to be in 

the commitment of church members. The pastor and evangelist 

can't bring revival to a church. It has to come through 

the concern and work of the whole congregation, and their 

dependence on the Holy Spirit. 

Through the years we have employed many methods to 

make revival happen. Some of them have been gimmicks 

that-worked for a little while and then ceased to be effective 

as people became accustomed to them. We may be learning 

that nothing beats earnest prayer, faithful witnessing to the 

lost and a simple presentation of the gospel. The churches 

that do all of these, regardless of size, will have results. 

It well may be that God is getting ready to do something.

Leaders (kill for Special Day of Prayer

Three Southern Baptist leaders have issued a call for a special Mother's Day 

prayer for world evangelization,and for peace with justice to coincide with Evangelist 

Billy Graham's preaching visit to Moscow beginning May 9. Issuing the call to 

Southern Baptist [pastors and churches to. include a special prayer in Mother's'Day* 

services this year are Bailey Smith 1 , president of the Southern Baptist Convention; 

William Tanner, {president of the Home Mission Board, and Foy Valentine, executive 

director 

of the Christian Life Com- : ' " "

Tanner heads {the agency charged with 

the responsibility for denominational 

leadership in evangelism and Valentine 

heads the agency responsible for denominational 

leadership for peace with justice. 

Graham will (preach iq both Russian 

Orthodox and Baptist churches on May 

9 and will also speak on May 11 in Moscpw 

to religious leaders from around the 

.world on the imperative of peace with 

gustice in a nuclear age. 

In their resolution the denominational 

leaders said tfiey were calling for this 

special Mothers Day .prayer, "Since 

Christians around the world are bound 

together by a common allegiance to God 

in Jesus Christ, by a common mandate 

to Share the good news, and by a common 

concern for peace with justice, and 

"Since in the fullness of time, God is 

siting before jus an open door for going 

into all the World to preach the gospel 

to every creature, and 

"Since thej* threat of annihilation 

through nuclear war hangs with increasing 

heaviness j over us, our children, and 

all humanity.'* 

Parks Visits in El Salvador 

Just back-(from visits to El Salvador 

and -Guatemala, R. Keith Parks said he 

was impressed with the quality of Baptist 

outreach in those two central American 

hotspots and six other Latin American 

countries he [visited. 

The Foreign Mission Board president 

and his wifej Helen Jean, visited the two 

nations plus j Belize and Barbados on the 

first leg of! their trip. They were accompanied 

Iby Don Kammerdiener, director 

for Middle America and the Caribbean, 

and his wife, Meredith. The Parkses 

also visited! Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay 

and Brazil. , 

Making the trip to keep a "field perspective" 

as Ithe board's top administrative 

decision maker, Parks praised the missionaries 

for overseas service despite tensions 

and problems

In Guatemala, where the two couples 

visited Jess [than a week before the recent 

coup, Parks said he could sense certain 

pressures .gnawing at some of the 22 missionaries.

"If you probe them a little bit, some 

of them wit} begin to identify some of 

their anxieties and uneasiness and discomforts 

and problems and "frustrations," he 

said. "Then, after you've scraped all that 

av/ay, they come back and say, The 

Lord has called us and this is where we're 

going to be 'til he directs otherwise.*" 

In El Salvador, Southern Baptists' only 

two missionary couples are engaged in a 

rapidly expanding literature ministry. Reacting 

to political and economic uncertainties, 

middle class as well as poorer 

Salvadorans* are searching for truth in 

religious books, new churches are springing 

up and church attendance is increasing, 

Parks reported, 

He acknowledged the risk factor in 

serving in places like El Salvador and 

Guatemala. But he affirmed, "The whole 

basic thrust of the Christian theology 

says to me that the souls of people are 

worth the risk of living in an uncertain 

and maybe dangerous environment." 

Hot Tub Too Comfortable "" 

Rick Papp wanted everyone to know he 

meant business when he made his profession 

of faith in Jesus Christ. 

When it came time to be baptized, Papp 

felt the warm water of a hot tub was "too 

comfortable to symbolize, the new commitment 

he had made." So Papp,-his pastor- 

Steve Moorhouse and a throng of spectators 

went seven miles south of the frozen 

mountain town of Crested! Butte, Colo, to 

find a ^stream that was not entirely frozen 

over. 

Papp stripped off his shirt while Moorhouse 

donned leaky .fishing waders. Together 

they broke through the ice on the 

edge of the stream and waded in. "Needless 

to say," Moorhouse noted in his chapel 

newsletter, "We didn't linger long." 

Papp "was beaming from ear to ear the 

whole time" and said he was so warm inside 

it didn't bother him a bit, Moorhouse 

said. ' . - 

It turns out that Papp has been a member 

of the Wisconsin Polar Bear Club which 

each winter cuts holes in the ice for an 

invigorating swim. (BP) 

APPOINTED . . .Paul L. Stevens, associate 

pastor at Bethel Church, Norman, 

and his wife, Ruth, were among 33 people 

named missionaries by the Foreign 

Mission Board this month. They will 

work in the Philippines as a general evan* 

gelist and a church and home worker. 

Born in Del City, he is the son of the 

Wyman L. Stevenses and considers Del 

City, First Southern as his home church. 

He is a graduate of Baylor University and 

Southwestern Seminary. Mrs. Stevens is 

the former Rityh Stark, daughter of the 

James T. Starts of Bartlesville and considered 

Bartlesville, First as her home 

church. A registered nurse, she. has been 

a hospital and clinical nurse in Bartlesville, 

Norman and Oklahoma City and 

does volunteer work at Oklahoma City, 

First's Good Shepherd clinic. 

GOING .TO LIBERIA . . . Steven E. 

Armstrong who served as minister of 

evangelism and youth at Tulsa, Woodland 

Acres in the late 1970s, and his wife, 

Kay, have been named missionaries to 

Liberia by the Foreign .Mission Board. 

He will be a general evangelist and she 

will be a church and home worker* He 

is currently assistant pastor at Rosemont 

Park Church, Fort Worth, Texas. His 

hometown is DeSoto, Texas and Mrs. 

Armstrong is from Dallas..' ^

Missionary Service Now Open to Foreign-born Persons Convention Parking Limited 

Persons born overseas who become 

naturalized U.S. pitizens can apply for 

appointment as Southern Baptist missionaries 

to countries other than their original 

homeland, according to new Foreign Mission 

Board guidelines. 

Effective May 1, the guidelines extend 

eligibility for appointment .consideration 

to naturalized citizens active in Southern 

Baptist churches, provided they meet requirements 

in education and experience. 

The rules seek to affirm appointment of 

those who've adopted the United States 

as their homeland, while encouraging 

growth of missionary movements in Third 

World countries. . 

The guidelines modify a previous policy 

that limited appointment eligibility to 

naturalized citizens who moved to the 

United States before completing secondary 

school and to those from countries 

to mwhich Southern Baptists send no missionaries.

"I think this new step is more in line 

with the reality of the world in which we 

live and our own national makeup," said 

William R. O'Brien, Foreign Mission 

Board executive vice-president. "We're a 

continental, multiethnic denomination. 

We're seeking ways to more effectively 

channel the energies and spiritual gifts of 

all Southern Baptists as they make themselves 

available." ' 

William R. Wakefield, board director 

for south and southeast Asia and a member 

of the task force which developed the 

new guidelines, expressed excitement 

about sending foreign-born missionaries 

of varying ethnic groups to the nations 

in his area. He believes they will a^d 

"diversity and enrichment" to mission] 

work and-bring cross-cultural skills already 

learned in their move to the United 

States. . 

"Too often we've presented the image 

of a white, 'all-American,' group that 

doesn't model who we really are," Wakefield 

said. (BP) 

Parking will be very limited for the 

1982 annual meeting of the Southern 

'Baptist Convention in the Louisiana 

Superdome, according to local arrangements 

officials, who urge all messengers 

—especially those staying downtown— 

to use the New Orleans bus system. 

For the morning and afternoon sessions, 

all adjacent lots and two-thirds of 

the parking at the Superdome wilt be 

used by New Orleans residents who work 

in the downtown areas. The entire parking 

supply will be available only for the 

evening sessions. 

Cost for the parking will vary. Daytime 

parking—6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.—will 

be $2 in the Northwest Garage and $2.50 

in all other garages. Nighttime parking 

will be $3 in all garages. The prices do 

not include in-out privileges. 

Space will be available for 70 buses 

and 30 "campers in the Superdome side 

lot at a cost of $55 for Sunday-Thursday 

or $35 for Tuesday-Thursday. Permits 

'Wounded 7 Pastors Find Salve at Louisville "Healing 7 Church

Life in the pastorate no longer has to 

end-for the estimated 50 Kentucky pastors 

who .are fired or asked to resign each 

year. > 

Even if a termination is justified, "a 

man shouldn't have .to reject his call," 

says Bill Hancock, pastor of Louisville's 

I'Highview Church which offers a.ministry 

to ministers that restores them to a place 

of service. 

Provides Compensation 

Caidwell-Lyon Association is the only 

known association in the Southern Baptist 

Convention that provides unemployment 

compensation for terminated pastors. 

Others, says Hancock, including 

pastors in his association, "have that 

support cut out .from under them immediately 

and they're out on the street 

begging. • 

- "These guys are embarassed to go to 

another pastor to ask for help,. and I 

don't think they ought to have to go 

begging. When people are hungry and 

people are hurting they need help." 

Highview offers part-time ministry positions 

with appropriate salary, additional 

financial and housing help if-necessary, 

and exposure to ministry opportunities. 

Hancock also counsels pastors going 

through the "grief and readjustment" period 

and helps them re-evaluate vocational 

responsibilities and abilities. 

Sam Smith is one of more than a dozen 

men who have received financial, spiritual 

and career assistance in the 10 years of 

Highview's program.

than a year ago, the Louisville native was 

asked to resign a hometown pastorate. 

"I was kind of numb because of what 

had occurred," Smith recalls. "We went

all." "But when Smith told Hancock why 

he was moving his membership, Hancock 

offered a place of service.- 

Smith began work immediately. He 

taught nursing home Bible studies, made 

hospital visits and church contacts and 

.participated in other outreach ministries 

for nine months. 

For part-time work as a special minister, 

Highview pays about $300 a month, 

depending on need. The churches food 

closet is open to their families and the 

family of one minister who lost his pastorate 

lives rent free in the house the 

church owns for furloughing missionaries. 

Gives $15,000 in Support 

Hancock estimates Highview spends 

more than $15,000 annually to support 

these ministers. 

"I am convinced I would have left the 

ministry without the .help from Highview," 

Smith says, "not because* I threw 

up my hands and rejected it, but because 

I didn't have the contacts." Hancock connected 

Smith with several churches, one 

of which called him as pastor. 

Hancock creates interview opportunities 

by contacting associational missionaries 

and pulpit" committees about the 

available ministers. Pulpit committees can the hospital." (BP)

A. B. Colvin, director of direct missions, 

for Kentucky Baptists, is the state 

contact for pastors searching for new 

churches. He has about 35 pastors' names 

for each Kentucky church without a pastor.

That statistic is particularly enlightening 

in view of recent national stories relating 

an increase in the number of 

Southern Baptist pastors being terminated. 

"Churches don't want you if you've 

been fired," says Colvin. "If you've been 

terminated, you are immediately stigmatized." 

Highview's help is not contingent on 

the circumstances of termination, but 

the church does limit the length of stay. 

Limits are necessary, Hancock-says, "to 

give them the motivation to get out and 

find another job in secular work. If the 

Lord does not provide them a place in a 

church within a reasonable amount of 

time then they've got to be practical. 

They've got to earn." 

Referring to a man Highview helped 

indirectly, Hancock said, "If he deserved 

to be terminated, he didn't deserve the 

treatment he got. As far as I'm concerned 

we are unchristian in our treatment 

ofûr Christian brothers." 

Hancock and Highview continue to 

play the good Samaritan who asks no 

questions and assumes no lifetime responsibility, 

but, Hancock says, "I'm going to 

help him until he's able to get out of

.Barefoot and coatless on a chilly spring 

night, a young man entered the New York 

subway car with a group of .Southern Baptist 

missions 'directors.

Huddled in their overcoats, the directors 

noticed his feet, scratched and scarred from 

the pavement, were missing one toe. 

In an impulsive act of compassion, Don 

Mulkey, state missions director for Nevada, 

sat beside the man, talked a few minutes, 

then gave his,own shoes and socks to him.

50 YEARS . . . H. Truman and Alice 

Maxey will be honored on their 50th 

wedding anniversary with a reception at 

Trinity Church, Oklahoma City from 

2 to 5 p.m. on May 8. Maxey served 

35 years in Oklahoma Baptists' child care 

ministry before his retirement as department 

director in 1969. He now serves 

on a part-time basis with The Baptist 

Foundation of Oklahoma. Maxey is former 

pastor of churches in Forgan and 

.Carmen and was the first president of 

the Southern Baptist Association of Child 

Care Executives in 1948. In addition to 

her activities at Oklahoma City, Trinity, 

Mrs. Maxey has logged more than 5,000 

hours of volunteer service at the Baptist 

Medical Center,: Oklahoma City. They

CJub when he; recently told them that 

crime has become so rampant in America 

that every person who lives a normal lifetime 

can be assured of one day being a 

victim. • >• 

.During the >1970's, he said crime increased 

60 percent, and it has-increased : 

11 per cent during each of the past two 

years. Revel jsaid that 36,000 serious 

crimes, including 73 murders, occurred in 

Oklahoma City during 1980. "The streets 

belong to the hoodlums," he said. "If we 

don't do a better job we are on the verge 

of losing certain areas of our country to 

the criminal element." 

He rejected the idea that: rising crime 

can be attributed to the number of deprived 

individuals in society. He said the 

blame could be more accurately placed 

with a breakdown in the moral fabric of 

the nation and the decline, of the family 

as a guardian! morality. 

The director went/on to say that law 

enforcement as a protector has largely 

failed. We have not reduced crime and 

we have hardly impeded its progress. 

Our work is cut out for us. Either we 

win people to new life in Christ, or we 

lose American The only way to change 

the criminal j is to win the criminal to 

Jesus. God has a word for us: "Seek the 

Lord while he may be found; call upon 

him while hej is near. Let the wicked forsake 

his way!, and the unrighteous man 

his thoughts;! and let him return to the 

Lord, and he will have compassion on 

him; and to jour'God, for he will abundantly 

pardon. For my thoughts are not

Associational missions giving was a 

little over $3 million—2.4 percent of total 

tithes and offerings. ~ 

The above statistics do not give a true 

picture of mission commitment. The item 

"Total Tithes and Offerings" includes, 

mission offerings, building fund, revivals 

and other designated .gifts. The above 

Cooperative Program and associational 

missions percentages are calculated on 

'total tithes and offerings. However, they 

are generally given from the church 

budget (undesignated) receipts only, therefore, 

the actual percentages will be 

higher. 

Caddo Association churches led in 

gifts through the Cooperative Program^ 

"îth 17.7 percent. It is interesting to note 

that 24 of the 27 churches in Caddo 

Association gave weekly through the 

Cooperative Program. Pastors have said 

all along, i"Our church gives more when 

we give weekly." 

Panhandle Association churches led in 

highest • percent for total missions with 

32 percent. 

Ninety-eight .percent of churches have 

a percentage giving objective to missions 

through the Cooperative Program. 

Percentage giving objectives through 

the Cooperative were grouped as follows: 

37 churches give 1-4 percent; 391 

churches give 5-9 percent; 615 churches 

give 10-14 percent; 230 churches give 

15-19 percent; 84 churches give 20-29 

percent; Cherokee, First gives 30 percent. 

Home Missions: 

Focus on Rural Churches 

A National Conference on Rural 

Evangelism designed to encourage pastors 

and leaders of rural churches will be held 

at Lifeline Church in Little Rock, Ark., 

May 10-12. 

Sponsored by the Home Mission 

Board,, the conference will also seek to 

help rural churches in developing effective 

evangelism programs. 

Among the program personalities will 

be W. A. Criswell, pastor, First Church, 

Dallas, Texas, and Jack B. Johnson, executive 

director-treasurer, Arizona Convention 

and former pastor of Ponca City, 

First. "

Gifts Top $3 Million for Quarter

First quarter, 1982 Cooperative Program receipts are 

22.5 percent above last year. More than one million dollars 

was shared each month by the 1,517 cooperating churches 

and missions, bringing the total to $3,675,248.24. This is, 

truly a cause for rejoicing. . /. 

God is blessing Oklahoma in many ways. Oklahoma 

Baptists must continue to remember Luke 12:48, "For unto 

whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required." 

Increases in individual giving, church sharing and convention 

sharing is necessary as we move toward 1985 and the 50-50 

division of the Cooperative Program dollar. 

This quarter, 45 percent, totaling $1,653,861.71 was 

forwarded to SBC mission ministries. Your church Is. a part 

of bold sharing.
