Luther Gulick Influential Men in Basketball – Springfield College John Bunn Dr. Luther Gulick: (Elected in 1959) – Superintendent of physical education at the YMCA Training School who challenged Naismith to come up with a new game; involved in two Olympics and in the early days of AAU; helped establish the Camp Fire Girls to educate women on changing roles outside the home in 1911. John Bunn: (Elected in 1964) – Director of athletics and head basketball coach at Springfield College from 1946-1956; the “American Ambassador to Basketball” initiated several rule changes, including the elimination of the jump ball following a made basket. Ed Hickox Ed Hickox ’14: (Elected in 1959) – Dedicated his life to improving basketball; served as head basketball coach at Springfield College for 16 seasons and also as longtime volunteer executive secretary for the Hall of Fame. R. William Jones ’28: (Elected in 1964) – A native of Italy known as “Mr. Foreign Basketball”; co-founded FIBA and was a catalyst behind the introduction of basketball as an Olympic sport. R. William Jones Amos Alonzo Stagg: (Elected in 1959) – Scored the only basket in the first public game for the faculty team a the International YMCA Training School; better known for having won 314 games as a college football coach; originated five-man basketball. Dr. Ferenc Hepp ’35: (Elected in 1980) – Traveled from his native Hungary to attend Springfield College; known as the “Father of Basketball” in his country; promoted the sport in not only Hungary but in many other European and Asian countries. Amos Alonzo Stagg Arthur Schabinger ’15: (Elected in 1961) – Highly successful college coach who won 80 percent of his games over 20 seasons; was a founder and later president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), an influential organization currently compromised of nearly 5,000 college coaches. Dr. Ed Steitz G ’48, ’63 D.P.E.: (Elected in 1983) – One of the most influential figures in amateur basketball and its rules for nearly four decades; legendary contributions include reinstatement of the dunk (1976) and the adoption of the 3-point shot (1985); coached basketball at Springfield College from 1956 to 1966 and was the director of athletics from 1956-1990; chaired the U.S. Olympic Selection Committee from 1964 to 1980. Each year, the men’s basketball team joins nearly 2,000 Springfield College students, faculty, staff and alumni to perform a variety of community service in the city of Springfield for Humanics in Action Day. Members of the team annually participate in the “Rays of Hope Walk.” Each year, the team also participates in the Sean Allen 5k to benefit people challenged by disabilities.
